About First Year Learning Communities
First Year Learning Communities (FYLCs) are groupings of two or three courses that include all the same students to foster community among students new to college around a shared theme and coordinated coursework. This semester, you are enrolled in a FYLC called Writing a Recipe for Hospitality Leadership. It includes your HMGT 1101, HMGT 1102, and ENG 1101 courses. A peer mentor assigned to this FYLC will guide students through this first semester as well.
More about Writing a Recipe for Hospitality Leadership
Students’ experiences are key ingredients in this recipe for success. Instructors and students will work together across these three courses to prepare you for your future. Students will take a creative approach to solving problems and developing solutions while seeking opportunities in the hospitality industry.
Integrating ENG 1101 (education narrative, inquiry-based research), HMGT 1101, and HMGT 1102, this FYLC will tap into students’ past experiences and new research to build a new shared experience together. The goal is to help students identify and amplify that every person’s experience contributes to who they are today. Every person’s lived experience informs the way they solve problems and apply creative solutions.
