I chose the topic of long hours in the hospitality industry, because I think it’s ridiculous that people have to spend their entire week working while getting paid crap. More than ever, people are feeling the burnout of working in the industry. An article in the NY times by Tejal Rao said “Prep cooks and dishwashers clock out of one restaurant job and head to a second, but still can’t piece together a living wage. Servers rely almost entirely on tips because the minimum wage is so low.” Hospitality jobs are not paying nearly enough to live a stable life, which is causing people to need extra jobs. Why should someone work a bunch of extra hours and basically cover another shift when they’re not getting a livable wage? The industry is understaffed and instead of solving this issue with giving people reasonable, which is the primary reason the industry is understaffed, they’re just having people cover more shifts. I fear the more they ignore this issue, the more it will deter people from wanting to join any hospitality profession.
This project is being made because I want to inform students who plan to get into this industry about what they’re getting themselves into. I used a mixture of logos and ethos for my project. I pretended to tweet from a hospitality account so it can make my information sound more credible by giving off facts. You could say a bit of pathos was used because I tried to make people feel sad by telling them about how they would miss holidays with their family in my second tweet. I tried to use a scholarly and encouraging tone. I used those two tones by being factual and trying to encourage and inform students about the changes that they could and should make in the hospitality industry.
I used twitter as my genre because I was speaking to students who are particularly a part of the younger generation. All the information nowadays is being spread through social media, so what better way to reach students through a social app. One feature that made it a good genre is because I could make up student replies to further the conversation and my point. A second feature that made it a good genre to use is GIFS, because I thought it would be good to use to show the fake student reactions to my tweets. The last feature which made it a good genre was the fact that you could reply to certain tweets, so it made it clear what I was discussing.
Overall, I loved that I had time to finally research this topic. I’ve been very passionate about this issue for years, and I plan to make a change to it when I become a leader in this industry. People deserve fair wages and fair hours for the work that they put in. I would change none of the research I’ve done. I wish I could do a poll and go around to at least 10 restaurants and ask managers how many hours they make their workers work. That would be the one thing I would love to add to my research.
