What a college student could do while college to secure a job at F&B is to gain experience by working in restaurants part-time or whatever works for the student, and gain knowledge/experience at the same time.

    • Prof. Karen Goodlad

Would you recommend a specific position or department? What knowledge should the student seek?

  2. ia Macharashvili

Working at a restaurant in FOH or BOH is a good option in terms of developing the idea of the industry and gaining experience . I feel like some internships would be an amazing choice as well.

Many of our most successful students do multiple internships throughout the college years. What would you want to learn during an internship? What different parts of the industry might you seek out?

      • ia Macharashvili

I was actually thinking about that today and feel like doing an internship in the hotel industry or event management.

You and Ia have very similar ideas about preparing to work in F&B. Can you expand on what you mean by “gain skills”?

  4. Tarynn Smith

To develop the skills necessary to secure a job in F&B, a college student could work in a restaurant.

    • Prof. Karen Goodlad

Please expand on this sentence. What type of restaurant? What position? What skills do you believe are necessary to develop? What connections do you wish to build?

  5. Jeffrey Vegas

To secure a nice job in the F&B industry is to start working in jobs that are near or use that type of industry. Things like getting a job at a restaurant, or at a liquor store can get you more aquatinted with the F&B industry. Also in college, joining clubs is a good option to familiarize with what the industry needs, and what it provides for its customers.

    • Prof. Karen Goodlad

Yes! Please join a club. Join multiple clubs. Network.

What might those skills be? What experience do you wish to gain? What positions will help you gain the skills you identify as necessary?

Students can join clubs of their interests and possibly apply for an internship offered to them to get a more hands on experience and get a bigger overview of how the industry is like. This can help them develop specific skills needed in that department and expand their knowledge on what they already know so that the experience is more significant.

    • Prof. Karen Goodlad

That hands on experience or technical skill development is important and can help propel you in F&B. It is a physical job and practice is useful. Clubs and internships are helpful, which clubs might you join? When it comes to internships, it is likely that you need to seek them out, few will be presented without a search.

Us as students should work in order to gain experience. If it’s for front or the house, look for internships or small locations to practice. If they want to be server then they can start as runners, or server assistant. If the student wants to be a host, they can also work in small locations to practice with their words and actions. For BOH, We can start from the bottom like being dishwashers, or prep cooks. Then we go up and up and up. It all depends on what we want to do and where we start. And since we are in college, we could get part times by working three or two days a week. It’s heavy for us to work everyday and study, sometimes there is no time to do it all.

    • Prof. Karen Goodlad

Great suggestions. Starting in the support positions during college will help students reach higher levels in the workplace upon earning a degree. The degree is important, so is workplace experience.
