Some say “I’m heading to the office now.” when they’re heading to work. I wake up and say “I’m heading to the coffee machine now”. See I work from home which has its pro’s and con’s. One major pro is never having to leave my PJ’s. Ohhhh how I love not having to dress up, fix my hair and face for the office. Nope, I get to sit anywhere in my apartment and enjoy the luxury of never having to worry about those things.
See not only do I get to stay in my PJ’s but I get 24 hour access to air conditioning in this wretched humid NYC summer weather. I can officially avoid the sauna of NYC; our lovely subway stations. The coffee machine also makes me very happy because I don’t think it’s quite normal for a New Yorker to start their day without a cup. I can imagine myself missing it when needing to run out to catch a train, oh the horror. Well that’s someone else’s problem.
My problem is one thing and one thing only, my mom. Yup I said it, the light of my life, my guardian angel, my chocolate to my chip, she drives me CRAZY! She thinks because I’m home this is time for a chit chat, or maybe it’s time to have a blown out conversation in the loudest voice ever with a family member over the phone. Man oh man, the struggle is real. But I’m a reasonable human being so I approached the problem with a reasonable tactic, headphones. The greatest invention ever made. I put my headphones on and zone out for a few hours at a time when I am typing away or researching but they come off when a coffee break is in order.
My coffee breaks come when I notice my cup is empty that can happen a few times while I am working away at projects or while writing my blogs. I just noticed I need another break actually, please hold while brewing…
Okay I’m back.
Lunch breaks tend to occur around 1pm which I get a little TV time also, I assume the office goers don’t have that feature either. Oh yes I have the good life but this all goes down the drain when it comes to video conferences. Now those weekly meetups, I get all panicky. Why? Because my room has exploded into a clothing dumping ground, that’s why! Hours before the meeting starts, I set up my phone tripod in an angle where you can just see me. Plus the window and my banana plant, which makes me look like a good plant owner slash outdoor lover. I look like a hipster which I’m good with but just as long as they don’t see the clothing and all the empty cups on my desk, I’m happy.
Once the setup is ready my face is next. I go forth: fix my hair, makeup and throw on a respectful top but not too formal I still want to look like I wasn’t trying too hard. Kinda like “I woke up like this, flawless!” style. If you know what I mean.
When the conference takes place it happens at my L shaped desk which my father and I made from some scraps of wood. I don’t have much on it when I’m not working but once I start working you can probably find 5 different cups of half drank drinks that may or may not have a fly floating in them. THOSE COFFEE DESTROYING BUGGERS! Some other stuff you can find on it; my mouse (the computer kind, not the cheese eating kind), keyboard, Wacom tablet, computer, snacks and a note pad to write some of my to do lists down. When I say to do list, I mean the things I already completed but wrote down just to check it off right away so I believe I actually did somethings. See the trick too, a to-do-list, is never write them out first because you always start with unrealistic expectations. I’m no Usain Bolt (the fastest man in the world) I’m just me; who tends to take way too many coffee breaks. So I write it out after I have already done a few things. That way I get a fully completed to-do-list everyday and it helps me believe I’m on my way to success. I’m just a few more to-do-lists away from getting the clothes off the ground in here.
