Unit 2 Problems/Issues Brainstorm

In the society we live in today we face many problems and issues that affect people from all walks of life. These issues include immigration into the US, the ridiculously high rent prices in NYC, and the sudden increase of hate against Asian people due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These issues alone affect millions of people everyday throughout the US.

Immigration is a massive issue in the US today, more specifically people being taken from their families if they’re an illegal immigrant. Everyday people are being ripped from their homes and sent back to their original countries from which they left from originally. People move to America for a better life and they shouldn’t be sent back over technicalities, especially if the person getting sent back doesn’t have a criminal record and is a productive member of our society. I feel as if this is a very important topic to discuss at this point in time as there are hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants in the US and there has to be some sort of solution to help provide the life that these people deserve to live.

Another major issue in the US today is constant increase in rent prices which also affects quite a lot of people. With so many people living paycheck to paycheck at this day and age, the ridiculously high rent prices make the quality of life quite difficult for a lot of people as the cost of living itself is already difficult to deal with for a lot of people. It’s very important to address this issue now because with this Covid-19 pandemic, finding and keeping a job is quite difficult and then having to pay the cray high rent prices makes life quite difficult for a lot of people.

Additionally, the sudden increase in the hate against the Asian community is just outright disgusting. In these times, Asian people seem to blamed for Covid-19 when it isn’t their fault at all. This is genuinely upsetting in our society today as people are getting blamed for something that they had no involvement in at all. It’s quite upsetting that in 2021 an entire race of people are being attacked both physically and verbally just based on the color of their skin.

I’m not too sure which topic I’ll be picking to write my article about, but I’m mostly leaning towards would be either the immigration topic or the hate towards the Asian community as a lot of my friends are Asian and they are affected by this issue almost everyday.

Unit 2 “Why I’m Behind the Athletes Bill of Rights”

I was initially drawn to this article because I played college sports myself (not to the same level of the NCAA) and I too believe that there has to be some major changes made in the NCAA to help ensure the physical, mental, and financial safety of the college athletes that play in all of the different sports that the NCAA “governs”.  I like this authors writing style because it’s quite easy to read. The vocabulary is pretty simple and the author doesn’t try to show off how smart he is by using advanced vocabulary. I learned a lot reading this article, I didn’t think that the NCAA was so lazy when it comes to keeping their players in good shape, especially when he stated that 30 college football players have died from heat exhaustion related issues. With the addition of all the other sports that the NCAA oversees, it genuinely scares me at what this number is for all sports combined. The use of data like this throughout the article just continues to reinforce the authors claims and it not only provides his statements with the validation of data, but also gives the reader an idea of just how bad the NCAA treats their players. Additionally, he provided rules that the NCAA set up, such as players not being able to sell their old jerseys for some spare cash yet the NCAA can sell their current jerseys for ridiculous amounts of money, with the saddest part being that none of these players don’t even see a cent of the profits that the NCAA receives. This data shows us readers just how greedy the NCAA is when it comes to making money by using their own players as advertising equipment and not paying them at all. The author even used his own personal experience as a college football player to show that the NCAA is essentially lawless and operates as they please.  Additionally,  his experience as a senator shows the readers that the NCAA has not changed to this day. This article didn’t completely live up to my expectations as the introduction seemed to have thrown me for a loop, apart from that I thought the article was very interesting to read and quite informative.

Blood, Sweat, and Build

As I was walking through the streets of Long Island City, it seemed as if the only thing I could see was built cars all around me. The night was still young, but the street was completely packed with strangers, friends, and the occasional photographer coming by to snap a picture. This narrow cobblestone street seemed to have turned into a haven for car enthusiasts, some even stopping by my car to ask questions, exchange Instagram accounts, or just a quick compliment like “Nice build bro!” or “Keep up the good work!” Now it is time for everyone to move to our next destination, and it just seemed as if the artwork came to life as the engines roared as they turned on, headlights started to light up the street, and the parade to Soho began. The NYC lights shining into my car, and the noise of all the other cars around me seemed to be overwhelming at times even. Manhattan seemed to stop as we continued to parade down Broadway, whether it was people leaning out of the windows of their cars just to snap a picture or the random bystanders just watching as the parade of lights and noise go by. Even though all the cars are clean and seemingly finished, these builds just never seem to stop.

But what is a build? The simple definition of a build is a modified car, but the build itself can be turned into almost anything the owner can dream of and pay for. Whether you want to build a Honda Civic that can outrun a Lamborghini or an old Lexus sedan so low that it scrapes on flat ground, the options are endless. Everybody has their own ideas and creations, and these ideas are built with blood, sweat and tears. Additionally, styles and ideas change with both time and location. These differences can be seen when comparing two cars with one being from New York City and the other being from Southern California for example, as these different climates and the people themselves have different ideas on the purpose and use of the car. There are factors that influence a build, mostly based on the person building the car, but others such as climate, quality of the roads that the person drives on, as well as the budget designated for the build. Just like our tastes evolve as time goes on, car culture, as a build from 2001 would be very dated at this point in time for some people while others would appreciate the heritage of the older builds.

Car enthusiasts seem to have a language of their own, with all the acronyms of car chassis designations to just everyday banter between friends. Yet the one word that seems to sum up modified cars is the word “build”. The word “build” itself can be used in place of “modified car” as it’s just easier to say and is an overall better description of these cars since they are built for and by the owner. It’s pretty common to hear “Hey, that build is sick” or anything along those lines at car shows and other events related to modified cars. The word “build” seems to be universal when it comes to car enthusiasts, from the people that prefer the small fuel efficient Japanese vehicles to the massive American muscle cars that make ridiculous amounts of horsepower. Even though the word build itself is straight forward, the meaning behind it can write novels just based off all the different groups of people that use it.

Personally, the word “build” means a lot to me. Coming from a background where I must work for my money and my possessions, buying car parts or even a car in general, the long days and long nights don’t seem so bad when I can see the result of my hard work come to fruition before my own eyes. Additionally, building my car in my driveway provides the greatest sense of accomplishment as I get to use and appreciate the new modification, or “mod” for short, on my car. Whether it’s rebuilding the brakes or putting a new exhaust on, it’s the greatest feeling to fix or change something with your own hands, and then go on a drive to feel the results. While some don’t prefer it, I love working on my build. The inspiration for a build can come from many different places, whether it’s from motorsport, other car enthusiasts, nature even, the options and ideas are endless. Yet all this builds that all these different people piece, with myself included, cannot be done without a strong support group of family and friends. Whether it’s helping a friend with a flat tire on a late rainy night, or just coming to just hang out while my buddy is working on his build, friendship and comradery are some of the most important aspects when it comes to a build. Some people just see a modified car rolling down the street, yet for me I see someone’s passion project where they have essentially put their life into. From turning wrenches late into the night to waking up at 5am to get to that one car show you’ve been waiting for to show off your build to everyone there, it all seems to be worth it. Because of my builds, I’ve developed lifelong friendships with people from all walks of life; I met one of my best friends because of one of my builds, and he is 26 and I’m only 22 and we’re inseparable at this point.

Even though the word build doesn’t seem to mean very much, the effort and financial commitment that are required in order to truly build a car are extraordinary. Yet every build is different in its own way; from function to form, car enthusiasts can build their car to any specification that they prefer. And from this build, new relationships develop as others are strengthened. Car enthusiasts put these crazy builds together to show off their style and ideas for others to see as if it’s a rolling work of art composed of parts coming from around the world, yet one of the best feelings in the world is having someone come up to you and say, “That’s a sick build.”
