This OpenLab site is for both Section D054 (Mondays) and D045 (Tuesdays)

To-Do Before Class

  • If you don’t have these yet – Purchase sketching and drafting supplies as listed in Course Resources Recommended addition β€” a method of measuring. This can be a 12β€² or 25β€² tape measure; or an app for your phone
    • 25β€² (25 foot) tape measure recommended
  • Bring your pencils, triangles and architectural scale to class
  • Architectural terminology – Look up the terms on the list below:
    • Write their meanings in your sketchbook; and sketch images that help describe their meaning.
    • Be prepared to explain each term at our next class. Come to class with at least 1 question on a term you are not sure about.
Terms Week 2
  • Sketching Assignment:
  • Complete your sketch from the photograph on the slides from class.
    • Draw it again if you’re not happy with your first sketch.
  • Choose from the 2 other buildings in the photos on the slides – Hagia Sophia, Federal Hall; Slides 24 and 25.
    • Make a sketch from that photo in your sketchbook.
  • Writing Assignment:
  • Complete your Reflection Essay from the first day of class, if you haven’t already. See Agenda 2 for assignment information.
  • SUBMIT all work to:
  • NOTE: Follow these formatting and submittal instructions for every assignment:
    1. Save your file or photo of your drawing as a PDF. Keep the file size small – 2 Mb max.
    2. Name your file in this format: LastName_FirstName_ARCH1101_YY-MMDD_Assignment name. For example: if I were submitting my essay for week 1, the file name for the assignment would be: Gernert_Lynn_ARCH1101_22-0906_Path Essay
    3. Assignments that are not submitted in the correct format will not be graded. You will be asked to re-submit.

To-Do After Class

  • Measured Drawing:
    • On 11×17 sheet of paper:
      • Draw Title Block + Labels (like class practice, see above Download)
        • Or complete it if you started in class
      • Complete your 4 rectangles you started in class:
        • 1 square + 1 rectangle at scale: 1/4β€³ = 1β€²-0β€³
        • 1 square + 1 rectangle at scale: 1/2β€³ = 1β€²-0β€³
        • Use dimensions provided in class
      • Label your drawings – use architectural lettering you practiced in class
        • Remember to make guidelines for your lettering
    • Use your parallel bar (or T-square) and triangle to make careful, accurate drawings
    • Review videos on use of architectural scale
    • Bring your drawing to class. Bring all your supplies to class!
  • Reading and Writing: NOTE – instead of Homework – this will be in class work: week 5 for Tuesday class; week 6 for Monday class
    • Read the article “To Sketch is to Think” by Chris Wilkinson (see Download below)
    • Write a Reflection Essay – that responds to these questions:
      • Why is sketching important to you?
      • Why is sketching important to the writer, Chris Wilkinson, of the article?
      • How does he use sketching in his architectural design work?
    • Monday class: Submit your essay to Dropbox here
    • Tuesday class: Submit your essay to Dropbox here
