To-Do Before Class

Complete these items:

  • Purchase sketching and drafting supplies as listed in Course Resources; and here.
  • Bring your Supplies to class: you will be using them in class!!
  • Writing Assignment: Complete your Reflection Essay. Follow the Assignment instructions on Slide # 9.
    • Your paper should be written using 11-point Ariel font on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Include a header in the upper left-hand corner of the paper with your name, date, course number (ARCH1101), professor’s name (Prof. Gernert), and assignment number (Assignment 1)
    • Save as a PDF file with your name, date, course number [ARCH1101]
    • Submit your essay via email to me, Professor Gernert, by Tuesday September 6, 8AM.
    • Homework submittal file format, and uploading for the rest of the semester will be reviewed in Class 2
  • Sketching Assignment: There are 2 sketches due for class. Do them in your sketchbook:
    • Sketch 1: choose 1 or 2 objects you have at home. Set them up like the sketch we did in class – a “still life”. Sketch your ‘still life’.
    • Sketch 2: Draw a view in your home, or another interior space. Use the full size of your page.
  • You may use pencil, colored pencils, or ink for your still-life sketch. Be prepared to show both of your sketches during our next class.
    • Bring your sketchbook to class with your completed sketches.

To-Do After Class

  • Purchase sketching and drafting supplies as listed in Course Resources Recommended addition — a method of measuring. This can be a 12′ or 25′ tape measure; or an app for your phone
    • 25′ (25 foot) tape measure recommended
  • Architectural terminology – Look up the terms on the list below:
    • Write their meanings in your sketchbook; and sketch images that help describe their meaning.
    • Be prepared to explain each term at our next class. Come to class with at least 1 question on a term you are not sure about.
Terms Week 2
  • Sketching Assignment:
    • Complete your sketch from the photograph on the slides from class.
      • Draw it again if you’re not happy with your first sketch.
    • Choose from the 2 other buildings in the photos on the slides – Hagia Sophia, Federal Hall; Slides 24 and 25.
      • Make a sketch from that photo in your sketchbook.
  • Writing Assignment:
    • Complete your Reflection Essay from the first day of class, if you haven’t already. See “to-do before class” above for assignment information.
  • NOTE: Follow these formatting and submittal instructions for every assignment:
    1. Save your file or photo of your drawing as a PDF. Keep the file size small – 2 Mb max.
    2. Name your file in this format: LastName_FirstName_ARCH1101_YY-MMDD_Assignment name. For example: if I were submitting my essay for week 1, the file name for the assignment would be: Gernert_Lynn_ARCH1101_22-0906_Path Essay
    3. Assignments that are not submitted in the correct format will not be graded. You will be asked to re-submit.
