Frankenstein (iqra tariq)

Mary Shelley style of writing in “Frankenstein” helped me grasp and understand gothic literature. The ending of the book didn’t surprise me, yet Mary Shelley ended the novel in a symbolic manner that concluded the final moments of the relationship between the creature and Victor Frankenstein. “I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning miseries will be extinct. I shall ascend my funeral pile triumphantly and exult in the agony of the torturing flames.” Mary Shelley showed that even though Victor and the creature didn’t exactly have a loving relationship, for the creature, Victor was the closest he had to a family. For him, with Victor dead, he had no sole for existence and ashes  would slowly burn and fade memories of Victor and himself. Through Mary Shelley writing, she showed that both Victor Frankenstein nor the creature was a hero or a villain. She sympathizes with both of the  characters, but at the same she also condemns them.  Showing that the creature at the end of the day, just wanted to be loved and wanted a family, yet anger overpowered him and he killed Victor family. Victor on the other hand actually wanted to be isolated and live in peace alone, yet he was selfish never to own up to his mistakes, which caused the death  of his family. In a way, both the creature and Victor are one, but also at the same time there two different individuals. The creature desires to love and have a family, yet in some way, I feel like Victor in a certain way wanted his family to die either to gain isolation or a hatred he has been suppressing and the creature had the power fulfill his deep desire. Overall, Mary Shelley was able to portray both deep and dark desires of the characters in the book and how also the thirst of knowledge can also ruin a person and destroy not only themselves but also people around them.
