I have to say this novel was an interesting read. For a story written in the 18th century I believe the author did a pleasing job trying to portray Gothic. In an era where there was no television or anything go by the events in the story can only cause some kind of fear. For example, on page 99 when Frederick enters Hippolitas room to see someone kneeling in prayer. He suddenly discover it is a figure that when it’s stands and turns toward him the author describes this figure to be “the fleshless jaws and empty sockets of a skeleton”. Think grim reaper… scary. I personally enjoyed this novel. It may not have had a happy ending per se, but I thought it was pretty suspenseful. The mysterious, supernatural, chaotic, and tragic events that were happening all at once just kept me wanting to read more.
