Micro-Activity #12: Researching

Based on the comments I received on my last post I have decided to be a bit more specific with my topic. My topic now is the inequalities of Mexican immigrants in American agriculture. My research question is to what extent does the involvement of Mexican immigrants impact American agriculture? Labor wise and economic wise. I got interested in this question because I have recently been learning more about the lives of farmworkers in the United States and it didn’t come to me as a surprise when I found out that the majority of these workers are Mexican immigrants and how they have a history leading up to today’s workers.  What got me more interested is how they treat this group of undocumented workers, in today’s world it may even be considered modern-day slavery. Their human rights are not respected and without these hardworking people American agriculture would not be where it is today, this group of people face discrimination and inequities on a day to day basis. Some answers and information that I expect to find in response to my question are some statistics of the number of farmworkers that are Mexican immigrants,  some lawsuits against big companies for the violation of human rights, how with today’s pandemic the lives of these farmworkers are put on the line, why most of these farmworkers are Mexican and not from any other country, as well as maybe some improvements that some companies may be making to ensure their workers are in a healthy work environment, even though they have a difficult job they should feel safe enough to report anything without losing their job. If I was to find something that does not fit my hypothesis I would have to see why it doesn’t fit and what I could do to fix it, maybe I would have to change a certain point in my hypothesis or I would just not include it and replace it with another point or maybe include it and explain why it didn’t work and it could even become a counter-argument just to show two different perspectives.

This is great–but what exactly is your question. Are you interested in knowing: How do Mexican immigrants affect the agricultural industry of the United States? I also think you could ask, what would happen to the United States economy (or agricultural industry) without Mexican immigrants? Or what would happened to he United States economy (or agricultural industry) if the United States actually ended illegal immigration from Mexico? These are of course just suggestions that strike me as possibilities from what you wrote above.

I was thinking of what would happen to the agricultural industry without the help of Mexican immigrants and with that, the economy could be tied to it as well as what impact it will have on the industry. Thank you for your help Professor Garcia, I already had an idea but wasn’t too sure of how to put it into words.
