“Micro-Activity # 7: Pick a Model & Organize Your Ideas”

I decide to use Douglass’s speech as a model because he develops many effective rhetorical strategies to persuade the audience. First, he gets the audience’s’ attention and know what the audience wants. Second, he is not only address what is issue to black people but also visualized about the future and hopes. Third, he uses anecdotes to connect with his audience, which appeals emotional to the listener. Lastly, he also added someone’s quotes like poetry or poem to put in his speech to make it credible. Therefore, I would imitate some of his writing style to make my argument stronger with these strategies and there is more in his speech certainly. I also notice his speech is clear and simple even though the sentences are short. When writing a speech, the important things to include are using statistic, identifying the purpose, presenting the problem, suggesting solution, and proofreading. I am not sure the audience because I am confused in choosing my discourse community and the problems. I might switch to another one.  As a result, I am still working on it.

Kathy, as you finish your post you say exactly what I would have written which is that you do not seem to have a clear idea of what you are writing about or for who. If it would be helpful, come to office hours this week or make an appointment with me so we can get you going.
