Reading and analyzing Douglass’s speech and Wollstonecraft’s letter has been really helpful with me deciding which style I want to choose for my own writing. After looking at both pieces I have decided to go after Wollstonecraft’s letter model, I really enjoyed her style of writing and her strategies were very clear and understandable. I knew who her audience was and what her goal was with her discourse community. I think this genre will help me make and shape my argument because I have found new strategies as to how I could present my argument to my audience, I have found ways to catch my audience’s attention and persuade them as to why the issues in my discourse community matter and how they could be solved.
There are a couple of key points that are important to include in the genre that I have chosen, in a letter it’s always important to address the person you are writing the letter for, if this is not done no one will know who it’s for, another key point that’s important to keep in mind is to introduce yourself, you’re adressing someone so it’s important to know who is adressing them make yourself known. Let your recipients know why you’re writing a letter to them, name your purpose if this is not done they’re just going to end up confused. Follwing that same path in this specific instant make your argument clear this ties in with your purpose, if I want my audince to keep reading or listening to what I have to say it has to be something that could relate to them. Also keep in mind how you’re going to close your letter, this is what would be considered the icing on the cake summerize all your main points and remind them what your argument is and the final key point is to inlcude your signature this is your goodbye, you said what needed to be said now bring it to a close.
For my discourse community bilingual students , my audince will be parents with newly arrived kids, meaing kids who have been in a differnt country and just arrived to this country. I belive this particular group may see me differently because I wouldn’t undertsand the struggles of their kids, I wouldn’t know what it would be like to arrive to a different country and be looked at differently becuase I don’t know how to speak the language. I have already seen the issues of my discourse community and have figuered out that my main point will be why being able to know more then one language is important and encouraged.
Great. You have a clear point to make and you have a good idea of the genre. I would just say that you say that you have taken a lot from Wollstonecraft but do not name the specific strategies you will use that she uses. This is fine as far as getting full credit for this post but it would be more helpful for you to already have a sense of the specific strategies you will use and with what information.
