The Discourse Community I am going to focus on is Gyms. There are a few issues with this DC that I can think of, but I will stick to the two most important ones. The first issue that comes to mind is the over crowdedness of members at the Gym. This issue is most relevant during the beginning of the year. This is the time when Gyms are at their highest capacity due to people wanting to start the year with a healthier approach. Other times of high over crowdedness is in the evening because of members who head to the gym after work. This over crowdedness causes stress due to lack of available equipment and having to stay longer hours at the Gym to finish your workout routine. Some online research was done with ideas on how to solve this issue. On the website Virtuagym.com they suggested several approaches. One of them was to promote off peak hour deals to members with more flexible time schedules. This promotion would offer cheaper memberships during the morning hours or on certain days like weekends. This deal will help spread out the flow of people more evenly during the course of the day. I believe this idea would highly benefits gyms and should be implemented.
The second issue in this Discourse Community is the lack of communication at the Gym between the staff and members. For example, new members are usually intimidated to ask questions on how to use equipment or how an exercise should be done. This causes new members to stay longer amount of time on machines due to the lack of knowledge while backing up a workout station and at times resulting in an injury. A solution I thought of, is for new members to receive an hour orientation with a trainer to help them learn the equipment and encourage them to ask questions. Trainers should be on site for help with equipment inquiries if needed, at no additional cost. By educating members, the staff would be able to shorten the amount of time of untrained members when it comes to time management of equipment. This will greatly benefit the gym by having a more productive workout flow and pleased community.
So your DC is gym members? What kind of gyms? I imagine the kind of gym affects the way things work and even who the members are. Or is your DC one of the groups working the gym? In which case my question of what kind of gym would probably still be a good one to answer for yourself to help you think more about what problem you’ll investigate and who you will address when presenting the problem and possible solutions.
I agree, maybe I should be more specific and not think to broadly. Thank You
I like that your sole focus is gyms overall. I agree that the lack of maintenance can further lead to both physical and mental conflicts with an individuals experience.
Your topic does seem to be a bit broad. Try making it a bit more specific. Maybe say Planet Fitness, or maybe a specific community in the fitness community, like the crossfit community.
