I chose my swimming club among the discourse communities that I participate in. In this discourse community, we faced problems in these days. First, the swimming pool where community members took lessons and practiced three times a week was closed for two weeks as the social distance level was upgraded. Since we do not have meetings for two weeks, we can not communicate with others in person and even practicing in the pool. There is no way to reopen the closed pool, so we are just overcoming this temporary problem by communicating with each other through messengers that we used and sharing swimming-related videos. I have tried to practice in another pool, but due to social distancing, there are only a few places have opened, so it is almost impossible at the momentarily.
The second issue is that coronavirus infections continue to spread. No infection has been found in swimming pools so far in South Korea, but infections continue to emerge through public baths such as saunas. The possibility of infection in the water is rare, but the people were making efforts to wear masks outside the pool, especially in the locker room, to overcome the problem.
Due to these recent issues, people in the community, including myself, felt as if they were being interrupted by our basic goals of improving our physical strength and swimming skills through swimming. We may not be able to meet face to face for two weeks, or any longer, but we are trying to overcome the problems we face as much as possible in a way that suits our present situation.
We’ve discussed your choice so that at this point, I don’t have much to add but we can discuss as we move forward. I would just encourage you think beyond the communication problem since that is not the main objective of a swim club–at least I wouldn’t have thought so.
