“Thus, members of a DC may have different first languages, different religions, and belong to diverse ethnicities.”
This quote is compelling to me when I think about the reach certain sports have in creating discourse communities. For example, soccer, as a universal sport, has enabled fans and team members from all over the world to come together with the same interests and goals. Different languages, religions and ethnicities united for the passion for a certain team and love for the sport.
“Fine, but we now need to emphasize the roles of new digital channels, such as emails, blogs, tweets, etc., and we also need to stress that without any means of intercommunication of any kind, there is no real community.”
This quote is appealing to me because the advances in technology has enable us to be closer to family members, friends and the people we share interests with. I rely everyday on technology to be able to keep in touch with my family members in different parts of the world as well as keep myself updated in the news, political and economic situation back in Brazil.
The first discourse community I am part of is my work community. I am part of the Michelin-starred Fine Dining service industry. We have goals we concentrate on, our unique way of communicating professionally and we strive to succeed in our daily tasks. We keep ourselves updated through emails, phone calls and regular meetings to assure everyone of us are on the same page. We also communicate daily in regards to service standards, product knowledge and availability, new items and procedures, guest services and floor format.
The second discourse community I am part of is my family. We are constantly in communication through WhatsApp, Instagram, phone calls, text messages and emails. We have the goal to keep each other close and updated on our daily lives even though we are very distant from each other. We are always encouraging each other, deciding on future plans and also coming together to decide the best ways to care for my parents.
The third discourse community I am part of is my friends. We share hobbies and interests and also enjoy sharing new experiences. We are always communicating to each other, checking on how life is going and planning moments to be together. We are very accepting and encouraging of each other. We have goals and we always make plans as a group. My friends help me become a better person by our interactions.
Good work here! As for your DCs–what work? Be more specific. As for family and friends, I would be more helpful for the assignment for you to also be more specific. For example are you an international student from Brazil? This is likely a DC. Or do you and your friends share an interest or hobby that is a DC?
Thank you for your feedback Pr. Garcia. I updated my post
