Preliminary Research and Picking a Topic

I cant decide if I want to pick gentrification in NYC or specifically The Bronx, and how it effects the minority community. If I can write about gentrification in NYC as a whole, I feel like I would have more to write about. I want to write about this issue because I feel like I am also being effected by this issue and I feel like this is an issue that I am passionate about. I have learned quite a lot on this issue, I also have a bit of background since I have lived in The Bronx all my life, so I have seen how much the community has changed throughout the years. I learned that there is a 950 million dollar development project that began housing luxury apartments in December of 2021 in the South Bronx. I also learned that Harlem was the last community that was hit really hard with gentrification. It was once predominantly Black and BIPOC working-class neighborhood which lost 10,085 black residents and 2,015 Latino residents while gaining 18,754 more affluent white residents. Three questions I have about this topic is how many people were affected because of gentrification, what is the average rent of apartments now compared to 10 years ago, how have small businesses been effected because of gentrification.

Christian, I think an Op-Ed on the effects of gentrification on minority communities is good. I do think you will want to narrow down. You can write a piece about your opinion on the gentrification of the Bronx which is happening right now. Or, if as you research, the topic still feels too big you might end up researching gentrification in a particular neighborhood of the Bronx. Perhaps it could be a neighborhood that is currently undergoing gentrification. Then you can write a piece giving your opinion about gentrification in that neighborhood. Alternatively, if there are groups fighting gentrification in the Bronx, see what they are arguing for and position yourself with that group by arguing for something that they recommend that you agree with.
