Preliminary Research and Picking a Topic

Mental health is the issue I choose to focus on and use for my Op-Ed. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness, many people are hesitant to talk about their problems. More than half of all Americans will be diagnosed with a mental disease, throughout their lifetime. However, not everyone will receive the assistance they require. Mental health can be impacted by a variety of factors. COVID, for example, has had a significant impact on many people’s mental health. School, job, and other factors can all have an impact on mental health. Another important aspect of mental health is how the media impacts individuals, particularly young people. There are numerous factors that influence mental health, as well as a great deal of stigma associated with the subject. People aren’t provided the right care and go undiagnosed as a result. I’m addressing the impact that a variety of factors may have on mental health and the significance of bringing it to light.

-What is mental health stigma and how does it affect people?

-What are the effects of cultural stigma around mental health?

-Should there be mental health days of school & work?

Sonia, This is a timely topic but you will definitely need to narrow down your focus. You might focus on a particular type of mental health issue. Or you might focus on the connection between social media and the mental health of teens. Or you can look at mental health care and a particular cultural group. Or you can pick some other mental health topic that is important to you. Then once you pick your more focused topic, you’ll see what the conversations are related to that topic. Without knowing very much, it seems to me that you will likely find a lot of information about the connection between social media and the mental health of teens. But pick something that really interests you.
