Pick a Model & Organize Your Ideas

The model I am choosing is a letter because the people who I plan to address are the discord community of engineering business chief executive officers (CEO’s) in New York. I plan to use a letter because the audience of the letter is clearer and more direct than I could accomplish with a speech which addresses whoever listens to it. If I can talk to them directly, I can get my point across more clearly and use language and reasoning they will understand.

My main problem for this program is the problem for City Tech Mechanical Engineering students is that the program lacks enough training and internship opportunities. I plan to write to the CEOs to talk about the lack of training and internship opportunities in New York City. In order to teach the students of today real-life experience is needed in the workforce. Us students are the future of the engineering workforce. According to LinkedIn there are about 800 internships available in New York and indeed about 400. For two of the seven engineering programs at city tech there are currently 500-600 students each. To anyone reading it should be clear that with the many other engineering schools in New York there are not enough internships for everyone. Of course, these numbers are not exact, but they show that engineering students overwhelming out number available internships programs. Next let’s talk about why companies don’t offer more internships. For short, it’s a waste of time and effort for them to hire and supervise students who aren’t even professional engineers yet and don’t have any experience. This is the main reason why there aren’t a lot of internships and why companies say there is a shortage of working engineers. Although there are many engineers in New York there is a lack of good, experienced engineers. We all heard about the paradox all students know of ‘to get experience you need experience’. There is a simple solution to this. Companies need to invest in the students of today to teach them and create good and experienced engineers.

Nigel, I agree that letter is a good choice for you. But remember a speech is not for anyone because it would be written for a particular audience.
Also, what is “discord community of engineering business chief executive officers “?
Finally, you have great issue, useful numbers, and a clear purpose, but you need to think more about how to organize your letter and how to present the problem so that those you are writing to care about it and feel motivated to do something about it.

For what is “discord community of engineering business chief executive officers” They are the head of engineering company’s. I believe they are the ones who approve of having interns in there companies so I am addressing them to ask for more. I believe most engineering ceos are part of there own community of engineering company heads. (Does that count as a discord community?)
