Mathematics

Mathematics form an integral part of each Fuse Lab project component. Everything from beam load calculations in BIM and structural design courses, to vector field calculations for discrete geometry parameter manipulation in computation and fabrication seminars, to solar angle calculations for sun path diagram generation in the Building Performance Lab sustainability course, a foundational understanding of mathematical functions and concepts is an absolute requirement for our students to be able to excel throughout the curriculum and beyond the classroom.

Instead of increasing out students’ course loads with additional mathematics courses beyond what is already required, we are formulating a series of math modules in consultation with mathematicians and industry partners with computational experience. These modules are customized to primary Fuse Lab project components and can be easily inserted into the various assignments given in designated Fuse Lab courses so that they are introduced as mathematical concepts and applied as architectural solutions simultaneously.
