End of Semester Reflection

• Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?

This summer I plan to relax, first and foremost. But when I’m not relaxing I will be looking for work, working my portfolio, and making some music.

• Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC,

  1. What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

The best experience I had working at FC was getting to work with such an amazing group of young designers. Their support and friendship gave me the confidence and drive to be a better designer, and I thank all of them for that.

  1. What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

I really like the idea of having workshops to where we can share our skills with each other and also learn some new skills. I think one of these workshops should be held every semester.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?

My advice to our new interns is this: Never be afraid to try something new. Take this opportunity to grow yourself as a designer and help your fellow designers to grow as well. Each project should be a new challenge you set for yourself to move forward in your design. Learn how to paint, or code, or animate, or whatever just don’t ever get comfortable. You should always be figuring it out. This is your education. Take advantage of it.

End of Semester Reflection Spring 2018

Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?

To keep myself busy and always have a project/goal to work towards. Prof. Eli mentioned that I should work more on my time management and that is what I plan to do, starting yesterday 😀 I’d also like to stop being so self critical and post more art on instagram/twitter.

Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC:

What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

Probably the longest project I worked was that of Amplify Works alongside Prof. Berger. We had meetings on and off either here in FC or in her office as we hashed out just exactly how she wanted the poster. The original design went through a slew of changes before we FINALLY hit upon the final design. That whole journey up until the end result is one of my best experiences here.

What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

Do more outside study based on graphic design. I spend all my free time aiding myself in my illustration career but I also need to remember that I also do love graphic design and would like to improve much more in that department.

End Semester Reflection Sp18

• Now that your college career is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?
I definitely want to refine my portfolio and work on improving my social media presence for my work. In the process I will be looking to land a career job or possibly start freelancing for big projects.
• Looking back at your time at FC,

What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

I don’t know if I could choose 1, so I’ll choose 2. The first being when Professor Jordan, Mandy, and Arianna pushed me to go speak with the coordinator of BTTIP to see if there were any positions I could apply to after not making it through the first round of applicants. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have ended up working at my other internship and gaining so much invaluable experience. The second would be being able to initiate animated pieces and challenging myself to learn a new program. Something that I will continue to improve on.

What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

One thing I believe could be done that would improve the experience working at FC would be to do more activities/workshops similar to the Strand Meet & Greet and  Winter Workshop day. I believe these will benefit the designers greatly and in turn benefit the work they put out for their clients.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?
Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to executing your ideas. I wouldn’t have thought I’d be using After Effects to create animated web banners and presentations, but I did and with the help and support of my team. Faculty Commons is meant to be a team that helps each other succeed. And if you happen to be the person who’s more knowledgeable on a subject whether it be keyboard shortcuts, file compression, program tools, etc. lend a helping hand to your team mate.

End of Semester Reflection

• Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?
My big overall goal is to get back into illustration full time by drawing daily and attending more figure classes to get my skill up. I’m going to work on new projects, both full illustration pieces and short comics, in my free time while hopefully working in a design job.
• Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC,

1. What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

Meeting everyone at FC! I’ve made so many new, great, and talented friends and seen us all grow that friendship together. I know it will go far, past graduation, and I couldn’t ask for a better team to work with. I’m going to miss us all being in the office together.

2. What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

There was issues when it came to editing previous projects to reflect new information, especially when there were multiple aspects to the job with the client. Perhaps a project list for the clients that we know have multiple parts to help lessen confusion on what needs to be done for the next designer taking it on.

And just slightly, issues with space in the office. It can tend to feel cramped, especially when there’s meetings which can throw us off a bit I think.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?
If you’re taking a lot of classes or graduating, and it’s conflicting with work, speak up! Your team and Prof. Jordan are there to help you figure it out so all sides are handled. They are your support group, so don’t be afraid to say something. Always offer help in return when you can.
If you’re new, welcome! Try to push each project to have an aspect of you in it. Don’t just look to what was done before, but what can be improved on and what would make a good portfolio piece for you.

Spring 2018 Mid Semester Questions

Have you come across any challenging projects this semester, whether it was a class project or a project with FC? How did you accomplish the project?
The most challenging project I’ve had to face (and am currently facing) is my senior project. So far I have been able to make strides at achieving small goals towards my project, however, I still have a long way to go. How I plan to continue to make progress in my project is to explore all options while simultaneously being critically selective of my choices—easier said than done. I also will continue to seek the advice and guidance of my fellow designers for second opinions for when my attachment to the project has blind sided my ability to be objective towards my goal.
What project(s) did you enjoy working on thus far during this semester?
I don’t think I can narrow it down to a single project, however, the work I’ve enjoyed doing has been for OER (Open Educational Resources). I’ve covered a wide range of projects for them including both printed and digital materials, and even some with animation. I’ve also got to experience what it is like to license my work using creative commons. As we are preparing for the gallery display in the library at the end of April, I can’t wait to see how it all turns out.
How have the projects you have worked on in FC aligned with your professional career goals?
I would have to say that working in FC has given me to ability to challenge myself in exploring new ways of executing my ideas. For example, creating animations for some of the projects I have worked on has broaden my perspective of the possibilities of what I can do with design. This experience of being able to challenge myself in discovering other creative outlets allows me to become a multifaceted designer and as I develop into a professional designer, I want to be able to have a versatile set of skills in my repertoire.

Spring 2018 Mid Semester Reflections

Have you come across any challenging projects this semester, whether it was a class project or a project with FC? How did you accomplish the project?

Probably the most challenging has been working on revamping the old Amplify poster with Prof. Berger. It was a challenge to make the poster both engaging and hit the target audience at the same time. We met counless times with new ideas on how to get to the ultimate goal until we finally hit it. The end result is really satisfying and I am really happy with what we ultimately achieved.

What project(s) did you enjoy working on thus far during this semester?

The Amplify design! And pretty much everything I am doing in Illustration 3 Class. It feels so great to draw for homework! And it doesn’t even feel like work!
How have the projects you have worked on in FC aligned with your professional career goals?
I’ve been very grateful that with nearly every project I have been able to incorporate my drawing capabilities in some way. It also helps me to see how it works within an overall design and not just on its own.

Spring 2018 Mid Semester Reflections

  • Have you come across any challenging projects this semester, whether it was a class project or a project with FC? How did you accomplish the project?

Yes, the biggest challenging of this semester is my senior project. Becuase my advisor asked me to keep research and research in the past 6 weeks, and I really afraid that I don’t have time to finish it. Finally, after many research and concepts, I getting into the digital works before spring break, and I can do most of my project on spring break.

  • What project(s) did you enjoy working on thus far during this semester?

Even though the senior project is the most difficult project in this semester, however, I really enjoy it. Becuase I can do what I really want to do, my project is making a children picture book, my own story, and illustration. It’s a huge work, which I need to think a story, and drawing it out, but I really enjoy the process I make becomes a real book.

  • How have the projects you have worked on in FC aligned with your professional career goals?

The projects which I worked for WAC in this semester, I think it really aligned with my professional career goals. I was used a lot of my illustration style into their poster and make it looks different than the past years. I hope my behaviors can make WAC looks “fresh” at this semester. I will still keep going for the rest of the day.

Spring 2018 Reflection

• Have you come across any challenging projects this semester, whether it was a class project or a project with FC? How did you accomplish the project?

So far this semester has not been very difficult when it comes to the projects. What has been difficult is balancing the quantity of work I have to do. Both Senior Project and Portfolio requires you to do a lot, but I am making my way though it.

• What project(s) did you enjoy working on thus far during this semester?

The most recent issue of the Nucleus was fun to work on, and the Black History Month poster is one of my favorites.

• How have the projects you have worked on in FC aligned with your professional career goals?

Working at Faculty Commons has afforded me the opportunity to do things, such as illustration and photography, that I probably would have not done otherwise. I feel like these skills make me a more well-rounded designer and will definitely help me in my career.
