End of Semester Reflection – Fall 2019

Have you accomplished your Mid-Semester goals? How have you accomplished those goals?

Throughout the semester my goals shifted. At first I set the goal to learn as much as I possibly can. But then I realized that while I was learning a lot, I wasn’t using any of the skills that I learned into my work. So then I shifted my mindset to trying to apply the skills that I learned. So instead of watching more general tutorials, I watched more specific tutorials. This helped me accomplish my new goal whenever I wanted to try a new method for my projects in class.

Are you happy with your results with the work you completed this semester? What was your favorite project you got a chance to work on this semester?

I am happy with the results of my work. Both FC and in the classroom. Some of my favorite projects included a commercial that I got to make in my Commercial Broadcast class and working on the Honor Scholars Poster Presentation. I was proud of how quickly I was able to communicate to the client as well as the overall product for both projects. More importantly I was happy that I was able to maintain quality while quickening my pace, for the most part at least.

How are you going to prepare for next semester during the Holiday Break?

During the holiday break I want to master different techniques in After Effects. That includes character animation/rigging, and using 3D (even though my laptop will probably hate me after winter break). This is something that I wanted to do for a while but wasn’t needed in any of the projects that I did. So I want to spend some time experimenting and enhancing my technique in After Effects. Then hopefully I will be able to do new ideas for next semester when I’ll be taking Motion Graphics 2!

End of the Semester Reflections- Fall 2019

Have you accomplished your Mid-Semester goals? How have you accomplished those goals?

I believe I have accomplished my mid-semester goals. My main goal for this semester is to complete my internship course. Because I took a lot of time to find a suitable internship job last spring and summer. So I was very worried about this course. Finally, I got an internship position in the FC which enable me to finish it. However, there is still one week left so I hope I can get a good grade for this course. During the internship, I was exposed to many interesting projects. I enjoyed doing all of them and I also like most of the work I have accomplished this semester.

Are you happy with your results with the work you completed this semester? What was your favorite project you got a chance to work on this semester?

I am satisfied with most of the work I have completed this semester. I enjoy all of the projects I did, the most impressive one I think is the WAC poster project. Because it was my first project during the internship. So I was a little nervous and worried about the outcome. However, I found out I was a little overreacted. Since it was my first project everyone was trying to help me out. My colleagues and director gave me a lot of suggestions and constructive feedback. Because of that, I can finish the posters very smoothly. I used to like to find illustrations made by others on the Internet and put them in my course works. But through this project, I began to learn to create my own illustrations. For me, that is a big improvement.

How are you going to prepare for next semester during the Holiday Break

Next semester supposes to be my last semester so I will figure out my senior project topic during my holiday break. Once I know my topic I will start to do some research first. Additionally, I want to finish my own website which I have been pushed back several times. But this time I will try to complete it before next semester begins. Then I can have more time to focus on my spring courses and my internship projects. I will keep practicing the software and learn more skills to improve my design as well.

End of Semester Reflection

Working as a design intern at Faculty Commons has been a great experience.  It has been a great place to learn and also grow as a designer and professional.  I would say my greatest experiences here would be designing for various projects, however, I have equally had as much of a good time getting to know my co-workers hanging out in the FC office.  Or even being on the hunt for Pelf more recently as the holidays approach.

Working at FC has pushed me to try new things as a designer and test my boundaries.  Before starting at FC I barely touched Adobe Illustrator.  Yet a full semester into working at FC and my last three projects have all been done entirely on illustrator.

As for improvements.  I feel like I could always ask for more help and assistance.  Whether it be for someone to look over my emails before I send them or get someone to offer advice or look over a recent project.  A fresh set of eyes or a new opinion is always something that can help take your work in a stronger direction.  And there is definitely always room for improvement.

End of Semester Reflection

Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?

Some goals that I want to set for myself is to improve my technical skills. I want to work more in programs like Illustrator and Photoshop. Indesign has been sort of my best friend my entire career and I would like to be able to branch out to the other Adobe programs. Therefore, over the winter break (and into the summer) I will be practicing my Illustrator and  Photoshop skills.

• Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC,

What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

One of the best experiences I had working here was working with WAC. I don’t have that many clients but I always look forward to speaking with the WAC Writing Fellows. I enjoy the creative freedom they give me with my designs and I also appreciate the fact that they are always looking for ways to get the message out about what they do.

What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

Looking back now, and I know it wasn’t necessarily in my control, but one thing I would do to improve my experience is adjust my work schedule. As of now I have worked in the late afternoons to evenings, and on the later days of the week. I realize now that a lot of the work needs to get done by the beginning of the week, or sometimes the clients want to meet earlier than my work hours. I know I’m already taking morning classes next semester. Since I can’t really do anything about what times I work, I want to spread myself out more throughout the week so the clients can get what they need sooner.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?

Please have these answered by next week Wednesday, December 19th.

End of Semester Reflection

• Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?

This summer I plan to relax, first and foremost. But when I’m not relaxing I will be looking for work, working my portfolio, and making some music.

• Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC,

  1. What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

The best experience I had working at FC was getting to work with such an amazing group of young designers. Their support and friendship gave me the confidence and drive to be a better designer, and I thank all of them for that.

  1. What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

I really like the idea of having workshops to where we can share our skills with each other and also learn some new skills. I think one of these workshops should be held every semester.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?

My advice to our new interns is this: Never be afraid to try something new. Take this opportunity to grow yourself as a designer and help your fellow designers to grow as well. Each project should be a new challenge you set for yourself to move forward in your design. Learn how to paint, or code, or animate, or whatever just don’t ever get comfortable. You should always be figuring it out. This is your education. Take advantage of it.

End of Semester Reflection Spring 2018

Now that your (semester/college career) is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?

To keep myself busy and always have a project/goal to work towards. Prof. Eli mentioned that I should work more on my time management and that is what I plan to do, starting yesterday 😀 I’d also like to stop being so self critical and post more art on instagram/twitter.

Looking back at (this past semester/your time) at FC:

What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

Probably the longest project I worked was that of Amplify Works alongside Prof. Berger. We had meetings on and off either here in FC or in her office as we hashed out just exactly how she wanted the poster. The original design went through a slew of changes before we FINALLY hit upon the final design. That whole journey up until the end result is one of my best experiences here.

What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

Do more outside study based on graphic design. I spend all my free time aiding myself in my illustration career but I also need to remember that I also do love graphic design and would like to improve much more in that department.

End Semester Reflection Sp18

• Now that your college career is over what are some goals that you plan to work toward this summer?
I definitely want to refine my portfolio and work on improving my social media presence for my work. In the process I will be looking to land a career job or possibly start freelancing for big projects.
• Looking back at your time at FC,

What is one of the best experiences you had working here?

I don’t know if I could choose 1, so I’ll choose 2. The first being when Professor Jordan, Mandy, and Arianna pushed me to go speak with the coordinator of BTTIP to see if there were any positions I could apply to after not making it through the first round of applicants. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have ended up working at my other internship and gaining so much invaluable experience. The second would be being able to initiate animated pieces and challenging myself to learn a new program. Something that I will continue to improve on.

What is one thing that could have been done to improve your experience working here?

One thing I believe could be done that would improve the experience working at FC would be to do more activities/workshops similar to the Strand Meet & Greet and  Winter Workshop day. I believe these will benefit the designers greatly and in turn benefit the work they put out for their clients.

• For those graduating, what words of encouragement or advice would you give to the upcoming designers at Faculty Commons?
Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone when it comes to executing your ideas. I wouldn’t have thought I’d be using After Effects to create animated web banners and presentations, but I did and with the help and support of my team. Faculty Commons is meant to be a team that helps each other succeed. And if you happen to be the person who’s more knowledgeable on a subject whether it be keyboard shortcuts, file compression, program tools, etc. lend a helping hand to your team mate.
