If you are teaching a mainstream first year writing course (ENG 1101 or ENG 1121), you are required to use the syllabus templates provided by FYW. 1101 is here, and 1121 is here. These templates are designed to promote consistency, readability and accessibility for students. Please see the guidelines below for how best to utilize them:
- All ENG1101 and ENG1121 courses must use these templates (with the exception of 1101CO and 1101ML, which have their own templates.)
- All text in blue may be changed or adapted
- Text that is not in blue is required and should not be changed.
- Please do not change the formatting of this document, as it is formatted to be read by a screen reader.
- Please do not delete or add headings. (This info is required!) You may add subheadings.
- It is prohibited by CUNY policy to make any changes, including additions, to the accessibility and plagiarism policies.
We realize a template may seem annoying, but there is room for you to write with your own voice. We instituted this policy after reading every syllabus in the department (over 150!) Over 60% of these had to be returned for serious revision; they either went against CUNY or City Tech policy, they were confusing, missing correct learning outcomes, inaccessible or actually illegible (sometimes in a font too small to read). We decided to institute the templates so that all university and school policies were clearly stated, so and so the syllabus was readable by a screen reader.
