FYW Placement
Each City Tech student is given a number on the English “Proficiency Index.” Students who score below a 65 on this index are placed in 1101CO. Speakers of English as a Second Language have a separate testing system.
The “Co-Req” at City Tech
In ENG 1101CO, students work on communicating effectively, building an argument, adapting writing for different needs and situations, interpreting and responding to a text, and incorporating and citing secondary source material. The “Co” in 1101Co stands for corequisite, and means that alongside English 1101 we dedicate time to building vocabulary and critical reading skills, scaffolding writing assignments, understanding clear sentence structure, and developing habits for collegiate success. You can see the Co-Req model course here.
Co-requisites at CUNY
Co-requisite courses were established across CUNY to replace non-credit bearing English courses. According to CUNY Central, “In the corequisite model, a credit‐bearing Pathways course is offered at the same time as mandatory, non‐credit support.” This means that students who complete 1101CO receive extra help in order to reach the same level of preparedness for 1121 as all other students at City Tech.
