It is important for our students to know about the mental health resources available to them here at City Tech. City Tech’s Counseling Services Center provides “free and confidential counseling to City Tech students in-person, by phone, and by video. Services include individual counseling for academic, career and personal challenges as well as crisis intervention. They also provide support groups, referrals to campus and community resources, workshops and faculty/staff consultation.” Please let students know about the Counseling Center multiple times throughout the semester.
If a particular student is displaying behavior or writing content you find concerning, you might talk to them individually. According to the Counseling Center, “Faculty and staff members are sometimes the first to recognize the need for a student to receive counseling services. Unfortunately, not all students are willing to acknowledge this need or follow up with us. Counseling should only be seen as a support. It is best to encourage students to independently seek our services. The best referral comes to us after a caring instructor or staff person has personally discussed their concerns with the student, listened to the student’s response, and then recognized the student’s need for services. They can support the student to independently contact our office.”

Please note: Counseling sessions are 100% confidential to our students. Counselors only share information about work with a student if there is a risk to personal safety, or the student agrees to share information.
Crisis Situations:
If a student mentions suicide, please email the English Department Chair (SMMiller@CityTech.Cuny.Edu) and the Counseling Center immediately. If the student is in First Year Writing, please notify FYW Directors.
If a student is behaving unusually, is hostile or argumentative, is somewhat disruptive in class (but not violent or threatening violence,) they can be referred to the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) who will assess the situation. Please also notify the Department Chair. If the student is in First Year Writing, please notify FYW Directors.
If a student threatens violence or behaves in a violent manner, engages in obscene behavior or unwanted sexual conduct, please call Public Safety Immediately at: 718-260-5555. After that, please contact the English Dept Chair. If the student is in First Year Writing, please notify FYW Directors.
