The Public Safety Department manages security throughout the campus buildings. Security personnel are available at the active entrances to each campus building, and there is a security station on the first floor of the Namm Building in N109 (near the main elevator bank). Security is reachable by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Public Safety main number: 718-260-5550
Emergency number: 718-260-5555
Here are some areas overseen by security:
Keys
To obtain keys to offices or faculty restrooms, please speak to department Office Manager Lily Lam (lily.lam33@citytech.cuny.edu), who will order the keys from the Public Safety locksmith.
The English Department will provide the necessary keys for new employees; there is a charge of $25 for replacement keys.
Unlocking Classroom Doors
If you encounter a locked classroom door, you can first try the faculty bathroom key, which opens some classroom doors. Some classrooms also have a sensor by the door; you can tap your City Tech ID, which in some cases will also unlock it. If neither option works, then call Public Safety at 718-260-5550 (x5550 on an internal campus phone), and they will unlock the door for you.
Medical or Safety Emergencies
In case of an emergency on campus, call the Public Safety emergency line at 718-260-5555 (x5555 on an internal campus phone).
CUNY Alerts Notifications
In case of a campus emergency or unplanned campus closure, Public Safety will use the CUNY Alert system to notify employees and students. You can use CUNYFirst to check whether you’re signed up to receive alerts, or there are alternate instructions for those without a CUNYFirst account. Click here for instructions and further information.
Notifying Students of Canceled Classes
In case of illness or unavoidable emergency, you may need to cancel a class session. During regular office hours (9-5 M-F), notify Lily in the English Department office at 718-260-5392 or at lily.lam33@citytech.cuny.edu. At other times, you can call the Public Safety Department at 718-260-5550, and they will post a notice on the classroom door.
(You should notify the department of a canceled or missed class even if it takes place outside of regular office hours.)
