Week 3: Homework

Like the homework assignment last week, we will begin with an in-class exercise and you will have an opportunity to complete it before our next class.

Bookshelves filled with books and toys.

First, let’s look at the photo above of my bookshelves at home. Let’s discuss different strategies for organizing what we see.

Second, I would like you to work in a pair (or three if we have an odd number of students this week). The person you work with should be someone who you did not work with last week. Take turns showing your photo, explain the context of the photo (where is it, what kinds of things it shows), and discuss together strategies for organizing it in different ways. The owner of the photo should take notes of the organization strategies discussed. Help each other generate as many strategies as possible! After you’ve had time to discuss and take notes, each team will report back to the class about the room photos and some of the strategies of organization. Everyone should be making notes on the strategies reported by other teams, because you can use those in your own homework assignment.

For your homework, each student will write a memo with five parts that you will publish as a comment to this homework post. It should follow the model below. Post it before our next class.

INTRODUCTION
One or two sentence introduction to your memo, its purpose, what it contains, etc.

ROOM TO BE ORGANIZED
Embed your photo here. Go to imgbb.com, click "Start Uploading," select your photo, set a time for it to be deleted (leave it up for at least 2 weeks), and copy the URL generated at the bottom of the "Upload Complete" screen (it will look like https://ibb.com/letters). Return to the comment box on OpenLab, click the icon that looks like a photo, paste the URL to your image, click Save. After you click "Publish Comment," your image should appear where you inserted it (which should be here after your introduction.

LIST OF ITEMS IN THE ROOM
Write a list of the items in the room. It can be a numbered list, a bullet point list, or a paragraph. It should not be organized. List things as they appear in the picture--top to bottom, left to right, clockwise, etc. If there are multiple similar items such as books, you don't have to list every title--you can write 12 books, or 6 detective novels and 7 textbooks, etc.

POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES
Discuss the organization strategies that you and your teammate came up with during the in-class exercise.

ORGANIZATION STRATEGY
Write a sentence stating which organization strategy/strategies you intend to use. Then, explain in sentences, a list, or a table (like we made in the last homework assignment) how you organize everything in your list of items above. This will involve some copy-and-pasting, but everything in your list of items in the room above should have a proper place in your organization strategy in this section.

    Introduction

In my memo, I will be discussing the organization suggestions discussed with my partner and how I chose to implement those changes within the room I photographed. The suggestions provided to me were good changes in terms of organizing to help with easy accessibility.

    Room to be Organized

    IMG-0100

List of Items: Left to Right

    1.     10 Books

    2.     1 Funko Pop

    3.     9 containers of supplements and medicine

    4.     1 hair mist bottle

    5.     1 jar of Aquaphor

    6.     1 bottle of toner

    7.     1 container of sunscreen

    8.     2 sticks of deodorant

    9.     1 bottle of cuticle oil

    10.  1 bottle of body oil

    11.  1 bottle of lotion

    12.  1 small jewelry case

    13.  10 bottles of perfume and body mists

    14.  1 large jewelry case

    15.  1 perfume box set

    16.  1 makeup bag

    17.  3 concert laminates

    Possible Organization Strategy

For organization strategies, my partner and I brainstormed the best possible ways to organize my space better. We mainly discussed the smaller items such as the containers lined on my large dresser, along with the items on the small nightstand next to it. Since my space is small, it is harder to put things in certain places, I have things where I feel they fit. Starting with the books, he thought it would be best to line by books up the horizontal way instead of the way they are now which is vertical. I liked this idea because it can allow me to easily grab a book instead of having to pick up everything to reach one when I need it. When it comes to my toiletries, we also thought it best to line them up in size order ranging from smallest to largest for easy accessibility as well. Organizing my room can also mean getting rid of things that may not need to be in my room at all, which can create more space. As mentioned before, for storage purposes it would be easier to leave larger items where they are.

    Organization Strategy

I decided to use both suggestions provided to me by my partner, as mentioned above. I do believe these tips can elevate my space and provide easier accessibility. I will also remove items from my room that I feel can be placed in better spaces outside of the room pictured.  I will organize my items by what is on the small nightstand and what it on the larger dresser.

    –       Books: Lined horizontal, titles facing out

    –       Funko Pop: Placed next to books

    –       Supplements and Medicine: Lining pill bottles together, also lining up small boxes and jars (getting rid of some)

    –       Hair Mist Bottle: Place in my hair organizer (not pictured)

    Toiletries- Organized Smallest to Largest

    –       Cuticle oil

    –       Two Sticks of Deodorant

    –       Container of sunscreen

    –       Toner

    –       Body Oil

    –       Lotion

    –       Small jewelry case to separate toiletries and perfume

Perfume and Body Mists- Organized from Smallest to Largest

    –       Makeup bag (placed in drawer)

    –       Large jewelry case (left where it is)

    –       Perfume Box Set (left where it is)

    –       Concert Laminates (left where it is)

    INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this memorandum is to record my efforts at streamlining the contents of this room to improve accessibility. My late maternal uncle always teased me about orderliness and said to me, facetiously, “a place for everything and nothing in it’s place”. He was a carpenter by trade and his tools were always cleaned, lubricated, and neatly arrayed in his tool box. As a tribute to Uncle Cedric, my teammate and I strategized and came up with a plan. The list of items include the following:

    1 plants on stand; vines

    1 chair with 2 cushions

1 framed picture hanging on the wall

    1 humidifier

    1 laptop

    1 Canon copier

    1 chair with 3 cushions

    3 stuffed animals

    2 dumbbells

8 books on top of a box (8 more books are in the box)

    1 Discovery game

    1 Chinese Abacus

    1 photograph on a stand

    1 plant on a speaker

    1 wooden African statue

My teammate and I discussed strategies aimed at improving accessibility to make effective use of the items. We started from the left and were satisfied with the position(s) of the plant and the chair. The humidifier will be moved to the right under the stand with the photograph and the dumbbells will be placed next to the humidifier. Two (2) shelves will be installed; (1) waist high, to accommodate the laptop and canon printer because it will be easier to use both if they are elevated. The 2nd shelf, immediately below, but at knee height will house the Discovery game.

The box with the books can be placed under the lower shelf and this will free up the chair to be used for its intended purpose. By the way, the box will be emptied of the 8 books inside and all 16 will be arranged in alphabetical order, by the name of the author(s).

The stuffed animals will be divvied up and placed on each chair. The Chinese Abacus will be placed on top of the printer.

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

My teammate and I discussed the most efficient method of organization. We wanted the most plausible method considering it is an Audio Visual Service Office that encompasses books, DVDs, and various categories. Amongst those ideas lie, usability, functionality, color, shape, frequency of use, and power versus non-power. These categories were prioritized in accordance with the room’s purpose – to assist students with audio visual resources.

    ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

We finalized the usability organization strategy because it was seemingly the most conceptualized method. It ensures that everything would be seen in accordance with how often people ask for it, easier accessibility, and organization. Once this method was chosen, the items were categorized upon the placement of the 6 larger categories.

This is a photo of my sister’s side of our room since if I showed mine it would be a 10-page paper of me trying to organize my side. I chose this picture in particular because I felt like it had enough where I can contain, but not enough to be considered a mess and concerning.

    IMG-5967-JPG

LIST OF ITEMS IN THE ROOM

    1. 3 stuffed animals
    2. 3 boxes
    3. 1 closet/dresser
    4. 11 wall decorations
    5. 1 fan
    6. A bunch of clothes

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

So one way that I can organize this room is by folding and putting clothes away by categories, i.e. pants with pants and shirts with shirts. Another way that I can organize can be by subject matter, that being my sorority decorations and clothing being put together whereas my personal decorations and clothing are put into another drawer.

    ORGANIZATION STRATEGY

I would organize this in the first organization strategy. I am very much the type of person that doesn’t really care about how things are put together, that being color-coded or organized by subject matter, I just want everything put away in an organized matter. I would probably change the way that the wall looks, that is putting the caps in a straight line going up-down, then the paddles in size order. Maybe put the painting somewhere else because I feel like, personally, it doesn’t belong alongside the other decorations. But you get the idea of how I would personally organize, I am a very lazy type of person and would want everything put away in a neat way, just out of the way at least.

Organizing information or items can be challenging for anyone. In this memo I will discuss the different strategies I came up with to organize a room and identify the most effective one. This memo contains a photo of the room to be organized, a list of items in the room, all possible organization strategies I came up with and a summary explaining the strategies I intend to use to organize the room.

    • Projector
    • 5 Brown desk
    • 12 Black chairs
    • 3 Brown chair with wheels
    • 6 Tan cabinets

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

Three things I took into consideration when brainstorming possible ways to organize the room was the design of the room, who will use the room, and the items in the room. The room to be organized is a science classroom with a limited amount of space. The room has to be organized in a way that students have access to the door and white board. My partner Diana and I discussed organizing the items in the room separately based on their color, size, design, and purpose in the room.

I intend to organize the items in the room separately based on their size, color and design. All the brown desks will be placed in the back of the room since they are bigger in length and width, and the white dance will be placed in the front of the room. Placing the white desk in the front and the brown desk in the back will make the room more accessible and aesthetically pleasing. The chairs will be organized based on color. All the blue chairs with wheels will be placed in the front, followed by the brown chairs with wheels and the black chairs without wheels. I decided to organize the chairs based on color aesthetic purposes. I found that the blue and brown chairs go well with the design of the white desk while the black chairs go well with the brown tables.

Items to be placed in the front of the room:

    • 10 White desks
    • 27 Blue chairs with wheels
    • 3 Brown chairs with wheels

Items to be placed in the back of the room :

    • 5 Brown desks
    • 12 Black chairs
    • 6 tan cabinets

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

My classmate, Khaled, and I discussed a few possible organization strategies for my desk space. One of the methods of organization we talked about was electronic and inanimate objects. However, our method might be better to section the items out by school/work items versus leisure items.

    ORGANIZATION STRATEGY

I did decide to go with the organization methods of school/work items and leisure items. However, I did make some changes to the method by adding decorative items as a category. I also decided to change the category of school/work items to electronic items since I found that school/work and leisure items can overlap.

    ·        Star sculpture

    ·        White candle

    ·        Silver tray

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

My partner, Tiana, and I discussed the different ways we could organize the room. We talked about sorting by color, where we would group the colors by white, brown, gold, gray, blue, and black. Tiana mentioned sorting by art, so we would organize by grouping the wall art and the sculptures. I saw that there were phones on his end table, so we agreed to sort by technology, that would include his TV, the lamps, and his multiple phones.  We agreed to sort by nature so that would be the flowerpot and the tray of granny smith apples. Finally, we agreed to sort by furniture, that would include his sofa, his lounge chair and his ottoman.

    ORGANIZATION STRATEGY

My strategy to organize the room is to first organize it by color. I would sort the multi-colored geometric rug and the blankets, the tan sofa and the Asian mask sculpture, the blue wall art, chest, and TV stand. The gold lamp and the Thai Buddha sculpture, the gray rocks and the star sculpture; the black phones, African woman sculpture, and the TV, and the white lamp, lounge chair, ottoman, digital clock, and the African mask sculpture. I would then organize by technology, I would group the lamps, phones, TV, and digital clock. Then I would organize by size, I would put all the larger things like the rug, the lamps, the sofa, the lounge chair, the ottoman, the TV stand, the TV, and the wall art together; then by medium objects like the sculptures, the flowerpot, the digital clock, the chest, the silver tray and the pillows; finally, by small objects like the phones, the essential oils, the rocks, the apples and the candle. I would then organize by art; I would group the mask sculptures, the Thai Buddha sculpture, the African woman sculpture, the star sculpture, and the wall art together. Then I would organize by technology such as grouping the TV, the digital clock, the lamps, and the phones together. Finally, I would group the furniture together that includes the sofa, the lounge chair, the ottoman, the end table, the TV stand, and the TV.

The purpose of this memo is to explain how I decided to organize books in the library. It will contain a photo of the room and its contains, a list of items in the room, possible organization strategies, and the final organization strategy.

    ROOM TO BE ORGANIZED

    https://ibb.co/ZG4tk3P

LIST OF ITEMS IN THE ROOM

The room is a section of our school’s library, so there are a large number of books present in the photo. I estimate there to be 150-200 books depicted. There are 6 rows of stationary bookshelves, as well as 4 mobile book racks. For the purposes of this memo, we will be organizing the books and mobile book racks, as we cannot move the shelves.

    POSSIBLE ORGANIZATION STRATEGIES

My teammate and I discussed several strategies of organization for the books. The mobile book racks would be lined up against the ends of the stationary rows. The most obvious strategy was to organize them by using the Dewey decimal system, but since this is in the library and that is how they are already organized, so we decided against that one almost immediately. We then discussed organizing them by size, color, and genre. We briefly mentioned shape, but all the books are rectangular in nature, so this method wouldn’t be effective. After this, we discussed how and where we would place the books. The options ranged from color first, then filling up the stationary rows from front to back.

    ORGANIZATION STRATEGY

Since I am a bit colorblind, I decided to organize the books by size. This way, I could easily identify the category of book. I decided to separate the books by large, medium, and small. After emptying all the shelves and organizing the books by size, I would then start filling the 6 rows visible in the photo. Large books would go in the first row. Since it is difficult to differentiate the exact sizes of the books from the photos, I can only estimate how many large books would actually go into the first row. With that being said, once all the large books were placed in the rows, I would then move on to arranging the medium books. Once that was completed, I would fill in the small books until all the books were put away. Once all the books were categorized and stored, I would align the empty book racks up against the ends of the rows.
