Reading: Writing That Works, Ch 12, “Writing Instructions.”

Welcome back from spring recess!

Now, it’s time to get back to work and complete the semester with a strong finish!

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary memo of your reading from Writing That Works, Ch 12, “Writing Instructions.” If you have time, write about the kinds of instructions that you have used that were effective and the kinds of instructions that you have you used that were not effective.

Project 2: Meeting Minutes #2

Before leaving class, each team member should post a copy of their team’s meeting minutes since the post that you made two weeks ago. Include your meeting minutes from this Monday and today. It should include your team’s schedule and other team work discussion.

Reading: Writing That Works, Ch 9, “Writing Business Correspondence”

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary memo on your reading for today’s class: Writing That Works, Ch 9, “Writing Business Correspondence,” and add it as a comment to this blog post. What does chapter nine add to your thinking about business correspondence that began in chapter eight? Have you written some of the kinds of business message types that are described in chapter nine, and if so, what were their purpose and how were they received by the reader?

 

Reading: Writing That Works, Ch. 8, “Understanding the Principles of Business Correspondence”

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary memo on your reading for today’s class: Writing That Works, Ch. 8, “Understanding the Principles of Business Correspondence.” In addition to your summary, have you engaged in business correspondence before? For example, emailing a boss, writing a letter to a company, or something else? Share your specific experiences if you have them.

Project 2: Meeting Minutes

Before you leave class today, each member of your team should copy-and-paste your team’s meeting minutes into a comment to this blog post.

You will have one meeting minutes from Monday’s class and one meeting minutes from today’s class. Simply begin a new comment, copy-and-paste Monday’s meeting minutes into the comment box, hit enter a couple of times, and copy-and-paste Wednesday’s meeting minutes below Monday’s. Finally, submit your comment.

We will do this each Wednesday for that given week’s meeting minutes.

Reading: Writing That Works, Ch 7, “Designing Effective Documents and Visuals”

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary memo of your reading of Writing That Works, Ch 7, “Designing Effective Documents and Visuals.” Include in your summary examples that you can recall of effective documents and visuals. These could include well-designed websites, brochures, manuals, infographics, etc. If any of these examples can be found online, please include a link in addition to your description of the example.

Reading: Writing That Works, Ch 6, Researching Your Subject

For today’s beginning of class writing assignment, write a summary memo of Writing That Works, Chapter 6, Researching Your Subject. In the content of your summary, focus on the strategies that the chapter proposes for research. In a separate paragraph, write a sentence or two about any kinds of research that you have done before: using library resources, citing passages from readings, collecting data with surveys, conducting interviews, or performing other research tasks. This latter part of today’s assignment will be useful to me as I design exercises that will help you with Project 2.

Reading: Writing That Works, Ch. 5, “Collaborative Writing”

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary memo of your reading for today’s class: Writing That Works, Chapter 5, “Collaborative Writing.” In addition to formatting your summary as a memo with the appropriate header followed by a content block summary of your reading, please write about any kind of collaborative work that you have done in other classes or situations. This can be anything in school, organizations, personal, or the workplace.
