Beginning of Class Writing: Your Job and Job Seeking Experiences

During the first ten minutes of class, write about your job, internship, and volunteering experiences. How did you go about seeking these experiences before? Where have you worked/volunteered and what kinds of work did you do? Did you learn new skills during these experiences? Are there specific businesses, organizations, or government where you would like to work in the future? If you know or have talked with people in those jobs or similar jobs, what kinds of things have they told you to do in order to prepare/apply for those jobs?

Remember to compose your response as a memo. It should have a heading block at the top that includes separate lines for TO, FROM, DATE, SUBJECT. Beneath the heading block, you write your response. You can find an example here: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/590/04/

I have never worked an actual job before but I did volunteer at a nursing home and at a childrenā€™s daycare. I was reading books and doing artwork with both the elderly and the children. With the elderly we planned parties and other fun entertainment activities and with the children I took them to the park, read, and did hands-on activities such as planting, building, and other science/ mathematical activities. I learned how to work quickly and under pressure, to have patience, and how to be more of a ā€œpeopleā€ person. I would love to either work for net-a-porter or even real estate. In order for me to be in real estate or even in the fashion ā€œworldā€ I will need patience and to be calm and collected under pressure.

I have only had only one job in my life thus far, which was in construction. It was rather easy to get into due to the fact that my dad works as a contractor. I didnā€™t have to apply or have experience for it. It was mostly to get work done and learn actual applicable skills for my own life and in the future. Aside from this, I have not had any other job or any volunteering experience. Recently I saw that Game Informer was hiring, a video game magazine, which is somewhere Iā€™d like to work in or within this field if I could ever get the chance. Otherwise, a gaming related website like IGN or Gamespot would be where Iā€™d want to work in. From what Iā€™ve seen, they want a good amount of writing experience, knowledge of the field, being able to travel, having a degree in English and having the skills to interact with people in person or on camera in order to get stories done.

I have had a paid internship at Touro College of Pharmacy for a little over a month. There I learned how to do case reviews and how to determine what a patient was suffering from based on their symptoms, their family history, as well as their lab results. I actually want to work in a hospital in the future as a nurse so that internship was a tremendous help to me in trying to figure out if this was the career I wanted to pursue and being able to see, more or less, what the job would entail. I have talked to nurses at City Tech about getting a job in nursing hopefully in the future and they told me that this was a great career choice but the only thing I have to understand is that it will be a lot of hard work. I, of course, am looking forward to a challenge especially if I know I will benefit from it. I have also worked at the retail store, Party City, for the last three years. I am currently a supervisor there as well as a cashier and a sales associate. Most of the work I do there has to do with assisting customers which I believe has helped me to be more social and open to people which can help in my future plans of being a nurse since I will need to talk with patients in order to diagnose them and treat them. The other aspects of the retail business I will not use in the future.

SUBJECT: Beginning of Class Exercise- Volunteer Work

I have been involved in many different fields of volunteer work since I was about 15 years old. It started off as a passion to keep my neighborhood ā€œclean.ā€ I grew-up, and now am back, living in Sheepshead Bay. People would dispose of everything from unwanted pets, to baby diapers, to illicit drugs and paraphernalia in the Bay, and I would volunteer my time with different clean-up organizations where we literally picked the garbage off the shore. As a teenager, prescription and illicit drug use, therefore leading to addiction, became an epidemic in my group of friends, which was the same as my world. I ended up devoting my time to organizations such as ā€œVOCAL,ā€ and ā€œThe NYC Civil Liberties Union,ā€ both eventually sought me out, having heard of my work with other Harm Reduction organizations and centers. When I started selling clothing out of a vintage store, which was organized as a not-for-profit, that was where I found my ā€œsalesā€ calling. This special place though donated its money to a camp for children of parents with HIV, and/or drug addiction.

    SUBJECT: My Job Experience

I have had many previous job experiences in the past. My first job was at New York Downtown Hospital as a volunteer in the Cardiology department. This job allowed me work in an environment full of medical professionals. This job was perfect at the time because i was going through Pre-Med in school. The second job I had was in Papa Johnā€™s Pizza as cashier, pizza boy, and telephone receptionist. This job taught me to be multi tasking in a single job and keep my mind sharp. My third job was a deliveryman for Dominoā€™s Pizza. This job was fairly simple but it allowed me to sharpen my driving skills and prepared me to drive in real life as i started understanding the conditions of the road. My fourth and current job is a Taxi Operator. I drive the Yellow Taxi in NYC. This job allows me interact with many kinds of people around the city and around the world. This is just temporary until I finish School. I want to work in research and development companies. I want to be able to apply my Bio-Medical Informatics degree to its fullest extent, including getting database and programming as well. I have spoken to many people regarding what I can do using the degree. I have been told that I can take that degree anywhere and get a job but, I have to be good at what I do.

My current employment is at the Traffic Violations Bureau, going on five years now. In which I assist the judge, in traffic court. Applying to this job was not an easy task. There was a state exam, which had to be taken which is only available every four years. After you pass the exam, there is then a two year waiting list before you are called. Including this job, most of my job experiences deal with customer service of the public and money handling transactions. During these experiences, I excelled in computers more and how to be professional at all times. I never experienced participating in an internship as of yet, but in the future surrounding my career I will have to. In the future, I would like to work in the field surrounding biomedical informatics. Which is currently my major here at City Tech, and a subject based internship is required.

Most of the experiences I had with jobs or internships I had not researched or had eagerly tried for. My current job, which is taking inventory for different stores, I had gotten from an ad which my parent had pointed out to me and had told me to apply for. A volunteering experience I had was working with children in an art program which one of my high school teachers had offered me. I was not seeking any of these, these were pretty much handouts. I can say that I have learned nothing new from any of these experiences, except maybe how to work with kids better. I know no specific business or organization that I would like to work in, but I am hoping I can get into a job that I could be an IT or something along that field. The things people have told me that were already in this field of work had said that you have to be more hands on, and also that you must learn how to use google to find problems that you canā€™t find immediately.

    SUBJECT: Job and Internship Experience

As of now I have not really had any real job experience however I have been involved in a few internship programs and volunteer work that have helped me get an idea of the professional work environment. The first program that I applied to was my senior year of high school, I was nominated my history teacher to participate in a leadership program for the Latino Youth residing in NYS. The organization is called the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/ Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. This was the first time I had to go through an application and interview process. I wrote an essay explaining why I deserved to be in this program and how I would benefit and finally I had a interview with the coordinator in which then I was accepted. During this program I learned a lot about leadership skills and public speaking. I also learned how the NYS assembly works by studying bills that were being debated to be passed. At the end we went to Albany and had the opportunity to participate in a mock assembly in which we stood up and were able to express our opinion on current bills. I also had the opportunity to meet many assemblymen and hear their valuable advice. Another thing that I am involved in is volunteering at my local hospital, I was trained to help patients with different things such as feeding, using the bathroom or just keeping company to disoriented patients. During my work at the hospital I have also learned how to behave in a professional setting. I have learned that a patient’s information is private and protected. There needs to be discretion at all times and always act appropriate to a situation.

I first started working to complete my community service hours when I was in high school. I worked at a preschool near my neighborhood. I helped the teachers look after kids, brought meals to classrooms, and did other minor things. Later I worked at the South Street Seaport Museum as an intern for a module class. I helped with printing papers and send letters. I also helped fed the animals in the tanks that were board a ship. I also worked at my local public library binding books. Overall it was a good experience for me because I got to meet new people and learned to be organized with my work. I donā€™t have any specific businesses that I want to work. I do want to find a job that is suitable for my major.

SUBJECT: Your Job and Job Seeking Experience

I have had a lot of different job experiences, ranging from construction, medical, and retail. In construction work, Iā€™ve learned how to put up drywall, lay down tile, run water copper pipes by soldering, but most of all I learned how to be goal driven and to work within a deadline. I volunteered at Kings County Hospital for two summers doing clerical one summer and nursing assistants in another. The first summer I had to answer the phone, file and shred documents. The second year I had to greet and feed patients, spread beds and retrieve medication from the pharmacy for the nursesā€™ station. During my retail experience I worked at Foot Locker. This job really helped me to to be a better multitasker and also helped with my ability to retain information, because when the store gets really busy sometimes you would have to get shoes for up to five customers at a time while having to remember the shoe code, where to find the shoe and the correct sizes for each shoe. The only one of these jobs that I can see working in the future is construction. I have talked to a few people in that field and the most important thing they tell me is to make sure I understand the fundamentals of the work.

My current job is a retail sales assistant at Pepboys auto. I assist customers that need specific parts for their vehicle, or if they need to know information regarding their vehicle. What I learned from this job is acknowledging different configurations and specifications for different kinds of cars, for example which oil a specific vehicle needs. I have learned new skills working at Pepboys, such as changing oil, light bulbs, wiper blades, and installing radios on vehicles. Aside from my current job I have volunteered at different hospitals over the past summers as a nurse assistant. There I learned how to assist the nurses by helping them file paperwork, organize charts according to the patients on the floor.

I currently work as a personal assistant, where i take care of a disable person. I run errands for them, clean, and help take their medicine.I know this job is ideal for someone pursuing a nursing career not computer engineering, but i took this job because i’ll be able to help someone which feels good. My previous jobs Iā€™ve worked in catering companies as a delivery guy which i didn’t learn any particular skills that will help me in my career. I haven’t work or been an intern related to my major, i know itā€™ll be helpful to gain experiences and I donā€™t have a specific company i like to work for the moment.

I have yet to earn any job experience, however I have done volunteer work for multiple events. It mostly consisted of cleaning streets and doing walks for charity. From my time there, Iā€™ve not only learned new things regarding our society, but improved upon my social interacting skills as the job required team work. I would like to one day write for a company that mainly deals with some form entertainment, such as video games. This includes IGN, Giant Bomb and other websites.
