Project 2, Research Logbook Update

Before the end of class, copy-and-paste your research logbook into a comment made to this blog post. Books that you might find useful also have to be entered into your logbook along with any quotes that you type up from the book resource. Remember to reformat your bibliographic data as an APA Reference entry, and include a parenthetical citation for all material quoted from a text.

We will continue your research during Thursday’s class as well. If you need to visit the library during class, you may do so only after talking with Professor Ellis at the beginning of class.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by impaired social interaction, impaired communication, and repetitive, restrictive, and stereotyped interests, activities and behaviors [1]. Atypical brain growth in young children with ASD prominently affects cortical white matter [2]. White matter is comprised of myelinated bundles of axons capable of rapid transmission of electrical signals between distant brain regions. Efficient conduction of information along corticocortical white matter tracts is necessary for the integrated brain activity that, in healthy people, mediates the complex socioemotional and communication task performance that is otherwise impaired in ASD. pregnant women with documentation of a psychiatric disorder recorded during a hospitalization were twice as likely to bear a child ultimately diagnosed with autism in comparison to women who did not have a diagnosis or whose status was undocumented. These results augment existing published data for a biologically plausible association linking maternal mental health status and child autism. A salient contribution of this work is that these relationships varied neither by race nor ethnicity.

According to Tomlin, “Medical writing is a subspecialty of technical writing typically practiced in the pharmaceutical industry. Medical writers, many of whom have bioscience backgrounds, contribute to the construction of a wide range of reports and dossiers, the content and structure of which are prescribed by government regulatory agencies,
such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“
