 Communication Design Management

My name is Angelica Vargas, a college freshman attending New York City College of Technology. I am majoring in Communication Design Management for my Bachelors of Technology. Now I’m reflecting on my major and also thinking ahead for myself in the future. I would prefer to enter a specific career field within my major. My major is filled with many unique features. It offers careers in the field such as advertising, publishing, web design and corporate communications. This is the best career for me because I have a great personality and I am great at socializing with new people and it also pays great. After graduating from City Tech with  a  Bachelors of Technology in Communication Design Management, I will obtain a career in the Graphic Design Advertising field. I would rather get a career that my degree offers when I graduate from City Tech. When I applied to colleges, I made sure to look for a school that offered my major, as I know I wanted to pursue my career in graphic advertisement. It was when I first joined the editing program in my high school, Academy for Careers and Television in Film. I immediately became interested in majoring in Communication Design Management. During my Junior year in Academy for Careers and Television in Film, students had to choose a program that we were most interested in. I picked the editing program. I enjoyed the editing program because it was so much work and everyone depended on the editor to tell the right story. With that experience I want to continue communication with people by advertising things in the media. This helped me makeup my mind in choosing my major in college. The School of Technology and design within New York City College of Technology, helps students learn from computer–based tools for design and modeling to real-world materials and production processes. The School of Technology and Design is well known for their unique programs such as Graphic Communications and Digital Media, Architecture and Computer-aided Design, Live Entertainment and Interactive Event Technology, Computing Software, Networking, Security and Data Management, Electronic Systems, Optical and Wireless Telecommunications, Robotics and Automation and Construction and Building systems. Faculty members working in this major represent a broad range of technology expertise, from basic hardware and software to systems integration for design and production. When students graduate from City Tech they will be well prepared to enter positions in certain industries.

The Bachelor of Technology in Communication design is located in the school of Technology and Design. It’s part of the Department of Communication Design formerly advertising design and graphic arts. Within this program students will gain the knowledge and skills that are necessary to function as productions managers who are responsible for monitoring and are good at processing images for delivery on a wide variety of print and electronic media. According to the City Tech Catalog 2015-2016 there are many ways to enter the bachelor program at City Tech. One way is entering as a high school graduate student if meeting the general college admissions criteria. The students that do this must follow the Communication Design Management AAS curriculum for the first 60 credits and may earn the AAS on there way. Another way to enter the bachelor program is to transfer within City Tech meeting the college criteria for the transfer admission.

One of the Reasons why I would follow my short-term goal in staying in the major of Communication Design Management is I love the experience so far within the field. It’s difficult in so many levels and challenging. The software’s such as Photoshop and Illustrator were introduced. Judging from a classroom setting it takes a lot of questioning and understanding to really understand the material. Who ever is the best and puts in the work that is expected will be the one who would be successful in the future. Professor with in this major will never stop to look for perfection in the projects. The Professor will push you to extent you can’t take it for the best. That encouragement is really needed.

In my high school, Academy for Careers and television in film. Within my Junior year Students had to pick a program they wanted to pursue in future careers. Programs such as Production design/hair and makeup, lighting/set building, editing, and director/script writing . I ended up choosing editing because I wasn’t a good actor and I wanted to be a person that everyone depended on to get the finished product. Me being in this program I learned how to deal with customers and also learned to always give them my best work .The editing program my school used was called final cut or final cut pro. This program was, challenging learning the basics of the program was difficult as it was my first time being exposed to such thing. Becoming a member of the editing program in Academy for Careers and television in film was the first step I took, that made me decide what I wanted to focus on during my education in college and what I’m doing now.

Another reason why I decided on choosing the Communication Design Management major was when I entered New York City College of Technology, is that during my 7th grade in I.S 125 my art teacher had so much hope in me. Having someone to support you will really get you far. I learned that with him because every time I used to fail he was the one that told me to keep trying to do it and make it better than the last time. I  would always get angry when he asked me to redo projects but now I am thankful and proud of myself. Knowing that he had hope in me and never thought less about my skills and abilities took my drawings to other levels. Going from 8th grade through 11th grade I used my sketch book as my drawing journal. For me it was a way to express my feelings without bad behaviors. Everything has changed since I entered college because the course are driving me crazy.

So far, being a college freshmen pursuing Communication Design Management has been a great experience for me to analyze my future goals and achievements within. The major at New York City College of Technology, Communication Design Management is a very competitive field for any student to study. I appreciate what all the professors have done for me. What I have learned so far in this field and in my college experience is to take advantage with all of the resources that are given to you. If you really want to achieve something, you have to be determined and never give up. There may be hardships that I will face throughout my four years in college, but it’ll be worth it in the end when I get my Bachelors in this field.

Following One’s Goals by Jonathan Valverde

Jonathan Valverde

English

Professor Jason Ellis

Hello, my name is Jonathan Valverde and i’m eighteen years old, I am currently attending New York City College Of Technology and I’m majoring in Constructions Management. Growing up I often got asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and to those who asked I would always reply with “I don’t know”, I really had no idea on what I wanted to pursue and become when I was older. It wasn’t until my senior year in high school that I discovered ‘Construction Management’ and the opportunities that came along with it, that is when I decided to pursue a career in Construction Management. In the following essay I will discuss the what the major is in depth, the reasons for selecting this specific major, and finally what I plan on achieving to get to the career I have selected.

The official name for Construction Management is ‘Associate in Applied Science in CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY’ (New York City College Of Technology Catalog 2015.234). I am going for my Associate degree due to the fact that City Tech does not offer the Bachelor’s degree for Construction Management, Im still in debate on whether I will go on to transfer to another college to receive my Bachelor’s degree or will go straight to the field from there. The City Tech Catalog states, “ The associate in applied science in Construction Management Technology program is the only one of its kind in the CUNY system. It prepares students for careers as managers and technicians in the field of construction. All facets of the construction process are studied including construction materials, methods, management and mechanical systems as well as all elements of design. Both the public and private sectors

are studied from the time the project is conceptualized until it is turned over to an owner. The program combines an emphasis on construction management with components of engineering technology”, in other words I will be taking classes that will only be benefitting me on achieving my goals in my career. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ‘Construction managers oversee specialized contractors and other personnel. They schedule and coordinate all construction processes so that projects meet design specifications. They ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Some managers may be responsible for several projects at once—for example, the construction of multiple apartment buildings.” in other words it is the duty of the Construction Manager to be on the job site and watch that everything is running smoothly. Just like it states, “Construction managers need to coordinate activities on large projects.” It goes on to say for one to be hired they not only need a degree in the field but as well as experience, the more experience the better for the employee. As a Construction Manager I plan on being in charge on the project site and cooperating with others to achieve what is needed to be done. It is my job to follow the building code, a book with what I’m able to do and not do in different situations. Overall ‘Construction Management’ is a big responsibility and is not for everyone, it is a career for those who are intending to give it their all in their careers.

There are many reasons why I selected Construction Management as my major. Before I even start to say anything regarding Construction, my family has a background in Demolition. Demolition is the exact opposite of Construction, instead of building buildings demolition firms demolish buildings or just may be destroy the interior of buildings. My father is foreman, in other words he is a demolition manager which I find amusing that I decided to follow the opposite and go to construction. Currently I am working for a private demolition company called ‘Titan Contracting Group’ where my dad has been working for the past 20 years. A reason why I selected this specific career is because  I can see myself doing this and most importantly enjoying it without regrets. When I was choosing colleges and different majors I was telling myself do I see myself doing this, such as a dentist hygienist. However it was different with Construction Management, I saw myself with a hard hat giving out instruction and cooperating with other managers to get the job done just how I have seen with my own eyes my own father do in the demolish business. Another reason why I picked this career is because the statistics, according to the bureau of labor statistics the job will only increase from here by sixteen percent. Moneywise on average ones salary is $82,800 dollars a year which translates to $39.80 per hour. Which is great but I plan on becoming an exceptional Construction manager and getting paid over $100,000 dollars. I plan on providing the individual I marry and my future children the best I can possibly give them as a family.  A third reason is because of my parents, as the first generation of Valverde in the United States I want to make both my parents proud of who I will become in my career, they unknowingly motivate me to keep on pursuing my goals. As an individual I have been blessed with great parents and what they have given me is priceless, as my father once told me, “With hard work and respect, it can get you far in life”.  Construction Management comes with great rewards as i’ve been told from those who followed the career and I plan on accomplishing this career myself.

Being a Construction Manager is a career I have selected to pursue and become one soon enough. At New York City College of Technology I will take the necessary steps and requirements to achieve my degree. Ones I accomplish this task I will go on to the field and not only be a construction manager but be a very high sought out one as soon as possible with great experience and firms. I will provide for my future family and give them the best possible future I am able to give them. In human nature it is always one’s dream to become successful in life not earning a salary but enjoying what they do in life and this is my goal as well to be successful in what I will do in the future. I have many to thank and many more that I surely will be thanking in the future. ‘Associate in Applied Science in CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY’ or known as Construction Management this is the career I will follow and give it my all.

Teacher teaching teachings

Jolleli Garcia

project 2

Professor Ellis

I’m Jolleli Sarai Garcia, I am a current student at New York City College of technology also known as city tech. I am currently taking a major in liberal arts and sciences however, I’m looking forward to transferring to another college that offers a major in education. I believe this is the career for me because I have always encountered myself teaching someone younger than me, my first two jobs were as tutor. Another reason why I believe this career is for me is because I love literature and writing, especially grading essays. The last reason to why this career would be ideal for me is that I wholeheartedly agree that education plays a role in every child’s life and education is the key to success. Throughout my essay I will discuss the following topics: I will provide some background information about my major, I will explain the reason why I chose this major and I will discuss how I plan to excel in my major and future career.

New York City College of technology, does not provide eight education major therefore I am currently in a liberal arts and science major. I need 24 credits to be able to transfer to a different college. To be quite honest I have always struggled with the question what do you want to be in the future? Almost as if I were scrolling around YouTube trying to find a video to watch. I am glad I finally found what I want to do in the future. From personal research and experiences I learned teaching is not an easy job and it’s often look upon. A teacher’s priority is the child’s education.

Majoring in education means you’ll learn how to manage a classroom, design and teach lessons, and the ability to help students succeed regardless of their background or learning style. Graduating with such major means I can get a job as a teacher in a school, in states like New York you are required to get a teaching certificate or license. With the license I can work for the department of education which is my main goal.

For me city tech is the first step in reaching my career. Through city tech I will gain a total of 24 transferable credits, that will open doors to new colleges to provide my major. Becoming a public high school English teacher requires me to get a certificate or license in order to work for the department of education. Using the occupational Outlook handbook, I learned about a high school teacher work environment according to the occupational Outlook handbook “teachers must cope with unmotivated or disrespectful students, teachers are also held accountable for their students performance on standardized test.” Through research I have learned that being a teacher especially a high school teacher is not an easy job and requires a lot of patience with both students and education system as it was also stated that “Schools have large classes and lack of teaching tools, such as computers, and up-to-date textbooks.” Working as a high school student requires me to have at least a bachelor’s degree. Majoring in education does not only required you to teach but as the Occupational Outlook handbook states “future teachers typically enroll in their higher education’s teacher preparation program and take classes in education and child  psychology as well.” In the city tech the only teaching program they have is a bachelors of science in education and technology teacher education does not provide a specific major on education, using City text catalog I’ve read that the bachelors of science in education and technology teacher education, provides only technological education. City tech provides a variety of majors in technology education which can be found in the college catalog pages 129 to 135. In order for me to pursue my career I would need to transfer. As I continue my research I came across an article by Peter Nowak called “in a class of their own”

Students go through rigorous courses where they work on a project or on a class work and they get a low score. Most schools have Large classes and large classes mean they can’t always be looking over each student’s shoulder to see if they’re following instructions or whether something might be missing.Variations on this problem are endemic in nearly every school, whether vocational or academic. Large classes mean they can’t always be looking over each student’s shoulder to see if they’re following instructions or whether something might be missing. Variations on this problem are endemic in nearly every school, whether vocational or academic. Test scores are often all that matter; whether students actually learn anything in the run-up to that final grade is largely secondary.  Those students who figure out how to game the system the company’s Sesame Snap app allows teachers to track and document the progress of a project or class with their iOS or Android device, students can share photos, videos and checklists of each step with their teacher, who can see where mistakes might have been made. Ian Tao the co founder of the Sesame HQ company says, “We want to change the output of the school system so that it’s not just transcripts and test scores.” Canadian schools of all levels generally rank well internationally, thanks largely to their willingness to be innovative with how students are taught. Whereas other civic institutions, such as governments and hospitals, have been slow to adopt new technologies because of inertia or bureaucracy, many schools are actively looking for ways to improve the experience for both students and teachers. Canadian schools spent $53 billion on a student population of about six million about $9,000 per student. Though teacher salaries make up the bulk of that spending, technology investment has been a significant part too. The District School Board of Ontario North East, for one, is considering a plan to install Wi-Fi on school buses. Education startups are increasingly finding that schools and entire districts are eager customers with substantial budgets to spend. Many schools are starting to invest as they are learning that each student has a different way of learning and as technology becomes an important part of students lives schools are trying to incorporate in their studies. Teachers and technology make brighter and more educated students. Maybe one day in the future we can actually have this in America and I’ll be a part of it.

Becoming a Forensic Science Technician

My name is Claribel Mariani and I am 18 years old. I am currently attending New York City College of Technology, CUNY (City Tech). When people have asked me the question of what I want to do, career wise, I have always hesitated. I was so confused to because there were so many things I wanted to do. I am currently majoring in Computer Systems Technology, however I will soon change it to Biomedical Informatics because it has more of what I want as a career. The career I have chosen to pursue is to be a forensic science technician. I know majoring in Biomedical Informatics is not the ideal major to pursue this career but it is the closest major that City Tech has to give me some of the needed requirements I need. I will eventually transfer to John Jay College of Criminal Justice to change my major to Forensic Science and ultimately reach all my necessary requirements to become a forensic science technician. I am excited about pursuing this career because it will give me the chance to fulfill something I have always dreamed of, it lets me put my problem solving skills to the test and because it allows me to help people in ways that benefit us both. In this essay I will discuss the following topics: I will provide some background about being a forensic science technician, I will explain my reasons for choosing this major, and I will tell you more about how I plan to excel in my major and future career.

Being a forensic science technician and studying Biomedical Informatics and Forensic Science takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Before I start discussing being a forensic science technician, I must talk about the majors and the necessary requirements needed before becoming one. As I had stated earlier, the major that I intend to study here at City Tech is Biomedical Informatics from the Biological Sciences Department. According to the New York City College of Technology College Catalog 2015-2016, “The Biomedical Informatics baccalaureate program is interdisciplinary training for a new generation of biomedical and healthcare workers prepared to meet the challenges of today and the future.” (College Catalog, 77). This meaning that the main focus of the program is to train a new generation of people to take over the biomedical and healthcare system. To give them a better grasp of what they are going up against. My major is going to give me the ability to understand everything that will be going on in my career. Biomedical Informatics contains a variety of different courses that need to be taken in order to accomplish this program. It handles with of course Biology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Biochemistry, etc. It also helps with finding an internship within the field. After a few semesters at City Tech, I will transfer to John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I will then change my major to Forensic Science. This will allow me to gain the necessary requirements I need to graduate with a Forensic Science major and go into the career I want.

As I said before I would like to be a forensic science technician. Being a forensic science technician takes a lot of hard work and dedication. They have to deal with all sorts of things like walking on to a crime scene and seeing dead bodies and other types of gory images up close and personal.  To get the idea of what exactly a forensic science technician does let us refer to Department of Labor: Occupational Outlook Handbook, where it states, “[f]orensic science technicians help investigate crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence. Many technicians specialize in either crime scene investigation or laboratory analysis. Most forensic science technicians spend time writing reports.” (U.S. 10) This explains all that forensic science technicians do in a nut shell. They gather all the needed information they can from wherever they get it from and analyze it in their labs or on the spot depending on what tools they have with them at the time. A forensic science technician can work in several fields. One field and the most common for many would be crime scene investigation teams, which is the field I want to work in. These are the people that show up to the scene of a crime and gather the needed evidence to help solve the case. Without the forensic science technician nothing would really get done because it would be hard to get a lead. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, in 2012 the average forensic science technician made $52,840/ $25.41 per hour. This career require a Bachelor’s Degree as an education entry level and no experience is needed. According to Susan Reese, the top ten percent of forensic science technicians earned over $85,210 in 2012. (Susan, 58) The top ten percent of forensic science technicians, top ten percent having to do with experience and seniority, are paid more than most forensic science technicians. Overtime depending on how long you have worked with the organization or  in this case the governmental crime scene investigation unit you get paid more or even on how well of a forensic science technician.

My major of Biomedical Informatics/ Forensic Science and my career path of being a forensic science technician have been a dream of mine for many years now. One reason why I want to be involved in this would be because it is something I have always dreamed of. Yes I went through my phases of wanting to be something else like a chef or even a doctor but my heart belongs to forensic science. I enjoy learning about the human body and it just intrigues me with all the things that it can do. Studying biomedical informatics has shown me so much more than I had expected. It has explained why our body does certain things and the result of things happening with the use of chemistry and biology intermingled. Being a forensic science technician has been my dream since I was 12. Yes that is not a long time ago but ever since I was introduced to it from watching it on television it has done nothing but given me the curiosity to research more about it and fall in love with it more and more. I have been told before that the television shows are not accurate at that they are far from what really happens in those fields but that is why I have closely researched what goes on and see if there is a similarity between the two. The only difference that I find that stands out between real life forensic science technicians and the ones on television are that they do not have the advanced technology that the television shows have. Other than that they are as similar as can be.

Another reason for me wanting to pursue this career is because I love problem solving and that is exactly what this major and career inspired me to pursue it. When it comes to finding the solution to a situation I love having to do extensive research to figure it out. The fact that a forensic science technician does extensive research to figure out a case and bring some type of closure to a situation or a person makes it a thousand times better. Forensic science technicians provide a sense of relief when they complete their job and that is exactly how I want someone to feel. Problem solving especially in this field is a lot of work but your brain is constantly learning. When you do extensive research on something you keep on searching more and more until you come down to the one thing that you are looking for. Believe it or not that information stays with you because you are constantly looking at it and rereading it.

My final reason for choosing this career path is because it benefits me and the people I am trying to help. When I say this I mean that me doing my job would help the person or persons that I am trying to solve the case for. Me figuring out the little problems and putting all the clues together help give the person I am solving this for some type of closure. Helping people is another reason why I signed up for all of this. I love changing the way someone feels for the better. It pulls a smile on my face knowing that I have helped someone whether it was directly or indirectly. Forensic science technicians are pretty much professional puzzle solvers. They fill in the gaps that no one else can see and allow things to be seen more clearly by everyone else. Even if they had more work to do then it seemed. This is the main reason I will wake up every day and enjoy going to work. To know that I have helped someone in the way I did will just be motivation for me to continue.

My dream of being a forensic science technician has come from so much. I plan to do so much in the next four years. My major in Biomedical Informatics and then transfer to John Jay to major in Forensic Science is only the beginning of my journey. I plan to do an internship while still in college and this internship will be the start of me accomplishing my dream. I plan to not only get my bachelor’s degree but also my master’s in forensic science because I want to broaden my knowledge of what I can use to excel in my career. In the next five to ten years I plan on either still being in college continuing my education and also working close to a crime scene investigation unit even if it just is an internship. As long as I do reach my goal and become a forensic science technician I will be happy and content with everything else.

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant and the stakes

Hello, my name is Younis Alsallaj, and I am a freshman at New York City College of Technology (City Tech). I am 17 years old, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I am very interested in numbers, problem solving, and recording information, which is why I chose accounting to be my major. I am studying accounting at City Tech’s School of Professional studies in the business program. I chose Accounting as my major during my senior year, I was choosing between accounting or computer science. I chose Accounting, because I realized that I am not really a computer person, and that I am more of a person who records and balances information.  What I like about Accounting is the challenge it brings with the types of journals, and organization needed to provide clients with their financial statements and balance. As of right now, in my first semester accounting, my sense about it being a challenge is correct. I am really confused with the different types of journalizing and credit and debit balances. I have a few questions about accounting which are: Will it ever be an instinct for me to tell which type of journal and credit and debit balances is which, and does being an Accountant ever become troublesome with the clients and what not. My future plans are to get a masters degree in accounting, and then pass the CPA exam which enables you to become a Certified Public Accountant.

Although my average in math was not as high as I would have liked it to be during high school, I still have a love for math. Besides other courses like English, Science, and all other classes, numbers always stood out for me and gave me an interest towards learning. The reason why I did not have a high average in high school was because I did not know what I was trying to become, because I started looking towards what my major should be in my senior year. I chose accounting as my major, but if accounting does not go well for me, Applied Mathematics will be on top of my mind of what I would change my major to. I would love to teach students how to learn the ropes of math and teach them to think about to equation more than just looking at and studying a boring formula. Teaching is something I enjoy as I could see myself as a math tutor or professor.

Accounting takes skill and determination to be able to play with the different information disposed to you. Accounting is about taking the information provided, to analyze it, then to journalize it, then to post it on a general ledger, and then to post it on a trial balance (more than one), and then to finally prepare the client’s financial statements. The point of accounting is to make sure that your debits equal your credits, and if it is not in balance, then something is wrong. Either the way you analyzed the data lead it to be misbalanced, or the way you did your calculations lead to that. That is the biggest challenge of accounting, it is the make sure your credits are equal to your debits, and if you can make sense of the balance, then that can give you the confidence to finish off the client’s financial statements.

To become an accountant, learning the basics is a huge stepping stone into being able to understand further recordings. The main point of accounting is for your liabilities (credit) and your owner’s capital (credit) to add up to your asset (debit). After all the recording and calculations are set and in place, then comes providing the financial statements. The financial statement is a set of statements. These sets include: Balance sheet, Income statement, and Statement of cash flows. The balance sheet shows the simple credit and debit statements. The Income statements the client’s financial operations and results, which include expenses, revenues, and whether or not the result was an net income or a net loss. The Statement of cash flows shows the cash gains/spending for the period. The periods do not have to be annual, the periods can vary from annual to monthly to every 6 months and so on.

No matter who you are, everyone needs an accounting to provide for them the financial statements, because everyone has to be taxed and your income affects how you will be taxed. Company owners are taxed, employees are taxed, even the president is taxed. That is why accounting would be my niche. I think the job will always be available and as I just stated, everyone needs an accountant.

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant is not easy, it takes some time and effort and knowledge to be put to the test. “The CPA exam is rigorous and demanding, and requires a CPA exam review course to increase your chances of passing.”(How to become a CPA).  It is a 14 hour exam that depends critically on review of all the accounting courses taken. The requirements to become an accountant:

  • A total of 150 semester credits from a college or university whose accreditation is accepted by the state (Colleges and universities typically offer a curriculum designed to meet the 150-credit requirement.)
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree
  • A specified number of accounting courses
  • A specified number of business courses (CPA Requirements | AccountingCoach)

One can become an accountant easily after 2 to 4 years of study, but the type of degree you have limits you to the pay salary you can receive. Also, the pay for an accountant depends on how long you have been an accountant for. The salary varies from accountant to accountant, as some may get a head start with a higher pay if they have a masters degree. The past reviews for an accountant may too affect how much he or she will get payed.

What I like about being an accountant is that an accountant has a lot of freedom. An accountant is not limited to a company. An account can work for many companies, and may also free lance and do outside business and work with other people that need help with their financial statements. That is one reason why the salary for an accountant may vary, because it is all dependant on how efficient and social an accountants work is carried out. It is a career I look forward to, as I will try to make a name for myself so that in due time, many people will be looking for me to do their financial statement instead of someone else. Experience is something I see as a work in progress and a person can never learn everything, but I will try to be on top of my game when it comes to accounting.

In conclusion, becoming a certified accountant is a job I can see myself doing and something I will enjoy in the process of the whole thing. It may take 6 years, depending on how fast I earn my credits and what have you, but I am a really patient person and I like to take things slow. Rushing things is never a good sign of things to come, and patience is something I am still trying to learn. Accounting is more like a journey, and I am ready for that long journey of learning and becoming.” Patience is not simply the ability to wait – it’s how we behave while we’re waiting.”(Xplore). Building a foundation and a core is viable to grow to that next level, and I have all the ingredients.

Career Exploration Goals By: Vaswanie Cover

Once you have a career goal in mind, you can either go with that idea when you get older or you can explore various career goals. My name is Vaswanie cover and, I aspire to be a computer technician in the future. This field consists of working with Computer Software and Hardware, wiring of computer systems, and repair of the internal and external parts of laptops, and desktops. The department according to the NYCCT is Computer Systems Technology and, this field lies in the AAS major (College Catalog 222). I will discuss what this major involve/what it is, my reasons for picking this major and, also why it is a great choice as a major for me.

Along with the evolution of computer systems, the technicians also have to evolve and adapt to technological advancements. Technicians from big global companies like IO Cablevision and Verizon FiOS are trained to work with the equipment’s the companies have. I want to be a certified computer technician because I am intrigued by the complexity of all types of modern computers.  I firmly believe I am fit for this because, I am still young and am opens to learn and embody all the new technological advancements.

When Computer Systems Technology comes to mind, what do you think about? Many people think that computer systems technology is only all about computers but, there are actually various aspects of the field. When working with computer, you don’t tend to think of what makes up the computer externally involving hardware only but, also what makes it up internally. In reality, a good percentage of the world’s population has access to a computer or even their own personal computer. Almost all technological device used today need software to be operated. Without a “link” or an icon to click on a computer, what are you really doing? Computer Systems Technology relates to this topic because, to work on a computer you need the proper software to do whatever task you need to accomplish. For example, if you are required to do a 5 page essay which is due on the same day but don’t have a laptop, you can now download Microsoft word on your tablet or phone then, print through a Bluetooth

Information Technology (IT) is not only used when involving software but, it is also an application of computers etc. that store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data. Computers are not the only source of all these functions but, many other technological devices. In this specific category televisions and smartphones can also do these functions. As long as the device can do more than one function and has a specific task then it could be counted as one. Regular cell phones and smartphones differ because a smart phone has applications. These applications vary from apps for location, texting, gaming, and many more ideas. The applications are made through special programs technicians use to build from the core up. The resource used to make up applications are called languages (Technical Term). Building apps and software for computer techs is not always easy. To build, the creators need to be creative. It is not always easy to come up with an idea the audience will like. According to the Academic Search complete, John C. Dvorak mentioned that, “Nothing mentioned is really new, let alone innovative” (Dvorak 185). He was referring to the new windows 10 compared to windows 8.1 lack of creativity. In many cases these creators have to do extensive research and study groups to ensure the success of their product and the ability to withstand competition.

Another reason for my choice of Computer Systems Technology is because of my extreme passion to work with computers. Just using a system makes anyone who is not as experienced want to examine its functions and various tasks it can do. Most of my life revolves around using a computer system to get to where I’m going. When I go to school in the mornings, I have to swipe my ID over a laser you hover over for entry. The laser is connected to a computer system to do that one task. Simply swiping my card alone is intriguing which brings me to my next point. To study how computers work and how I can manipulate it in my favor is drive and influence enough make something out of my young career.

According to the City Tech College Catalog, my course work will prepare me for, “Applying and evaluating technological solutions to solve real real-world problems, basic problem solving using various fundamental algorithms, understanding of various IT operations etc., managing and troubleshooting a computer information system, and understanding the current business practices in computer systems technology”.(College Catalog 222)  All of these Student Learning Outcomes will highly benefit me because; my main goal is to manage a business that involves computers. One type of business that utilize computers a lot is a Sports Stadium, the computers are used to keep track of scores. To obtain this degree, I must obtain roughly 60 credits which consist of electives and, liberal arts/ science credits. I also picked this major because, I desire financial stability. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “I would make an estimate of $23.51 per hour and $48,900 per year being a Computer Support Specialist.” (United States, Computer Support Specialist, pay chart.) The first step towards becoming a computer specialist is to obtain my associate degree. This will provide me with numerous entry level positions while I work on my Bachelor’s degree after which my earnings will increase.

I firmly believe in working at my own pace because I don’t want to rush through the months and end up soaking up no knowledge for my major as a result of burnout. One thing to keep in mind is the major you complete might not be the one you want to do due to different interest that may arise in the future. On the other hand, I feel like that wouldn’t be a problem for me. The City Tech College Catalog tells us that, “This is the only comprehensive curriculum in CUNY that addresses the specific needs of the Information Technology industry by integrating theory, hands-on experience through a required internship degree program component” (College Catalog 224). Who wouldn’t want a career that gives the chance of touching objects? Hands-on is one of the best ways of learning. This program also offers internship programs to groom you before being thrown own in the mean work world.

Computer Technicians is one of the best fields to invest in if you aspire to work with computers. If you decide to pick this major, you need to keep in mind that you have to have the specific college ready certifications/credits. The experience that comes with being a computer technician is beneficial if you want to start a business for example. The major consist of software and hardware, and working on physical aspects of the systems, young technicians are equip with the knowledge of computer functions both internally and externally before they start working with computer systems. I my dream is to become a Computer Support Specialist because I want to work with computers and one day own a business. The degree and major do require a bit more credits than other majors but the work put in is worth it. Progression to become a computer technician is a way I would like to grasp my achievements in becoming knowledgeable and successful.

Aiming for a future of Computer Engineering by Emmanuel Cassues

My name is Emmanuel Casseus, I am eighteen years old and I am a student at New York City College of Technology. After a few years of thinking about what type of major I wanted to study and what career path I wanted to specialize in I ended up choosing the path of a Computer Engineer. I have quite a few reasons for choosing the career path of a Computer Engineer as opposed to other majors but the most important reason is because I not only love computers exponentially, but also because I’ve basically grown up and matured together with them. If there is one thing I believe you should know, is that I have always said that “Computers are the gateway to a life of fun and success.” Personally, I believe this is the best career path for me because: A. Computers have always helped me grow as an individual, B. I have a long history with computers and C. Computers have a very interesting life cycle. From here on in this essay, I will provide some information and background regarding my major, explain in further detail why I chose this major and finally explain what I plan to do to further excel in the future.

The first thing you’re probably wondering is what exactly is a “Computer Engineer”? A computer engineer is a person who is well versed in the construction and building of computers. A computer engineer typically strives to develop ways to make computers faster, smarter, smaller, stronger, etc. In essence, computer engineer’s jobs are to improve the computer’s ability to analyze, process and even think, much like how our brains work. Computer engineers tend to work for computer companies such as Intel, HP and Texas Instruments as well as in industries that build or use computer-based systems. Often after graduation, engineers have quite a few options as to what they should pursue for their career. Some go for big name companies like Microsoft, Apple or Google. Others tend to start small and move up from there in companies like Intel and HP. Upon graduation however, “engineers at City Tech automatically qualify for direct admission to the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.” And most importantly the goal I want to achieve the most with my education at City Tech is a complete and better understanding of how the computers works inside and out.

To me, computers are like a strong companion that I have known for a very long time. Over the years I have learned how to use a computer more efficiently and have grown quite attached to them. To this day I can say without a doubt that computers have a strong influence in my life simply because they have helped me excel and shape who I am today. This might sound weird to others and they honestly might be thinking: “How does an inanimate object shape someone’s life?” Well firstly, let me explain what I mean by “Shape my life”. The computer itself is an interesting object. It is a gateway to many possibilities that mostly stem around something that we all use today called the internet. Computers and the internet have a shared role in shaping who I am in reality. I’m saying this because when some people look at a computer they only see machinery, a small or large box or device that is used to access the internet for multiple purposes which is often for entertainment. Although this is a true factor, I see the computer as more than a tool, as see it as an instructor. My reasons for saying this is because when you think of an instructor, you think of somebody who is smart and well versed in a certain subject or certain subjects. The instructor’s job is to not only help you understand the subjects he or she teaches but to also try and excite or interest you in the subject. This is the exact reason I see a computer as an instructor. The computer itself caused me to become interested in itself on its own. To put simply, the computers existence brewed curiosity inside me and eventually I chose to act on this curiosity and examine the computer. After examining the computer I became “excited and interested” in it which caused the curiosity I had before to evolve and manifest into a resolve. When I was younger I did not like to be social with others, I liked to keep to myself so I actually missed out on a few important things that I could have learned if I hadn’t kept my distance. It was through the use of the computer and internet that I was able to learn and figure out those exact pieces of knowledge I missed out on due to lack of communication. To keep things simplistic, computers have taught me a lot over the years and helped me not only shape who I am, but also shape how I speak to others, how fluent I am in the English language and helped me expand on my vocabulary.

To understand why I am so interested in computers, I believe you should know my history with computers to better understand me. I have been very interested in computers and technology since I was really young child. To estimate, I would say it was around the time when I was seven years old. Compared to my knowledge of computers today, back then I had absolutely no idea how to actually use a computer or what purpose it even served. The only actual thing I knew about the computer was what I learned in my elementary school computer classes and that was barely anything outside of educational programs or games. Eventually overtime I finally became interested enough in the machinery to actually try and use it. If I had to estimate I was around the age of eleven. My first experience with the device was definitely thrilling. It was one of those moments in a person’s life that they feel extremely ecstatic from learning about something new and amazing. Although, I was still a young child at the time so my actual experience and access to the computer compared to today was very restricted. Eventually as I grew older, I’d say around the time I first started high school so I was around the age of fourteen, I started to become better versed in the use of the technology. One thing I would like you to keep in mind is that I had to teach myself how to use a computer because no one else in my household knew anything about computers. Basically, for the last few years I taught myself how to use a computer and my knowledge from there expanded as I became older and my knowledge of computers has reached its peak. I know quite a bit about computers now from how “.exe” programs work, to how to modify file extensions and manage digital objects and programs. With that, you should now have a better understanding as to not only why I enjoy computers but also why I chose to pursue the computer engineer career.

And my final reason for wanting to become a computer engineer is that I believe the computer itself has a very interesting life cycle. To show you what I mean by that I have found and chosen an article regarding an important figure in computer engineering field and computers themselves. His name is Tom Kilburn and he with the help of Freddie Williams worked on the world’s first stored-program computer, the “Small-Scale Experimental Machine” (otherwise known as the SSEM). In this article I read this man named Tom Kilburn who made a significant contribution to the development of five historical computers. Kilburn was brought up in an interesting way as stated in the article: “Kilburn had a somewhat specialized education at Wheel Wright Grammar School having been permitted by his headmaster to study almost nothing else aside from math and technology around the age of 14.” It is because he was only allowed to study this that he ended up not only emerging as a specialist in mathematics, but also graduating with a high degree in mathematics. One of the few things I found extremely interesting in the article that pertained to computers is the section where it refers to a certain type of computer called a “Transistor Computer”. A transistor computer is a computer which uses discrete transistors instead of vacuum tubes. The “first generation” of electronic computers used vacuum tubes, which generated large amounts of heat, were bulky, and were unreliable. What I found the most interesting is that Kilburn along with a few other people were actually the first people to work on transistor computers and they might as well be called the inventors of them. Tom Kilburn is also the father of computer engineering’s sister occupation known as “computer science”. Kilburn did his best to establish an academic form of computing that required the highest degree of education and being well versed in the scientific and mathematic fields. Thus after many hardships and struggles the computer science major was born from Tom Kilburn’s efforts. Tom Kilburn’s efforts were one of the many stepping stones that led to the expansion and growth of the computer to this day.

To sum up the major point of this essay, the key points go as followed: A computer engineer is a person who is well versed in the construction and building of computers. A computer engineer typically strives to develop ways to make computers faster, smarter, smaller, stronger, etc. To me, computers are like a strong companion that I have known for a very long time. And computers have always had a strange yet interesting life cycle throughout these past few years. Aside from these points, I would like to draw your attention for just a few more seconds. I would like to explain something to you before we finish up here. Firstly, how I plan to excel in my major. I plan to take all the information I learned from my professors as well as outside information and mesh it all together into one. Basically, I will take my basic knowledge and new integrated knowledge and bring them together to make a form of fused information which I will later use to teach others in the future. For my plans to distinguish myself, like I stated earlier I want to take the knowledge I learn at City Tech as well as the basic knowledge that I already know and fuse them together to make a new form of information. I will use this, clean up and revise this information so that it actually makes sense and I will compare it to other explanations regarding engineering and if I find that my assorted information might be and or is more easily understood or more informative, I will use it to create a new way of explaining the subject.

My Major
Hi, my name is Rahat Ahmed, and I am here to earn my degree in Hospitality Management from City Tech. I personally feel that Hospitality Management is best suited for me because ever since I was a kid, I would tell my parents that I wanted to own a restaurant of my own someday. My second reason being is that if I have my own business then I am going to be my own boss where I dictate terms. I am drawn to this field for a number of reasons. I honestly believe Hospitality Management is really for me because I really have a passion for the business and I am really keen to explore it more. In this essay I will elaborate on my interest in Hospitality Management and why I want to be a success someday in the near future. In this writing I will provide a brief background of my major and how I plan on exceeding my expectation that I have for myself. The requirement of major is going to be tough but I am ready for any obstacle that comes my way.
Hospitality Management is the study of the hospitality industry. The main focus of my major is entirely based on hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, destination marketing organization, convention centers and country clubs. In other words my degree is mainly about learning how to manage big companies and organizations. For example if you walk into a five star hotel, you would obviously expect good personnel and management where they fulfill your desired needs as a customer. In my major I will be learning more on how to handle situations where there might be some confusion between the customer and our employee’s. If I am able to graduate with my major in Hospitality Management then I will be the most ecstatic person in the world because with that degree I can get a job as a hotel manager of big companies and make a name for myself. There’s no other better place for me to start thinking seriously about my major then City Tech. Me being a student here at City Tech makes everything easier because I am provided with great professors who are always looking to help out. My degree has a lot of requirements such as the number of different courses that I have to take in order get my degree. According to the “City Tech college Catalog P.108” I need a total of sixty credits to graduate with my degree. “Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts and Dining Room Operations are the three most important courses that I must complete for my major. Each of these three courses will show me everything there is for me to know in order for me exceed in my major. Brey, T. Eric tells me that having a degree in Management is very handy(Brey 79-102) My major “Hospitality management” is a very good degree to have under your belt because more than 80% of Hospitality Management graduates enter employment within six months of graduation. Popular areas of work include marketing, PR and sales, business management and secretarial roles. According to my research just over 4% of hospitality related function, or broaden their opportunities and moved into other career paths. This gives an indication on how important my degree is to me. Somewhere deep in my heart I know for a fact that this is the career path I want succeed in and make a name for myself.
Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to have a restaurant of my own. I used to tell my parents that someday I am going to be very successful in life, where I won’t ever have to struggle. Every morning that I walk into City Tech, I enter with a goal in my mind, a goal to get my education that’s going to benefit me in the long run. I have done some very important research on the salary of a Hotel manager and the minimum amount is $82,510 per year. This itself is a motivation to work even harder to accomplish my goals and strive for more. I don’t want to settle for less when I know I have the ability to reach greater heights and I am certainly up for the challenge that City Tech has to offer. When you have the passion for something, all you have to do is apply yourself to it and I certainly am, I am very much committed to getting my degree in Hospitality Management. According to the “Occupational Outlook Handbook” management occupations in general pays up to $93,910 per year. In life everyone wants to make money in order to live a life that they want rather than settling down for something average. I honestly believe ,I have the potential to accomplish something big in life and I wont give up until I reach the very top. I try to motivate myself as much as I can and seeing how hard my parents works makes me the most determined student in the world. I am waiting on the day when I can finally tell my dad to retire and just enjoy the rest of his life because my dad deserves the best.
In order to succeed in life you need to be your own boss where you dictate terms. Education is the key to success in life because education is something no one can take away from you. You need to have a clear mind on what you really want to do with your life and stick to that plan regardless of how hard it may seem at times. I had plans of coming to college to get a degree in hospitality management since I was a freshman in high school. I would irritate my teachers with questions and they would always help me out because they realized how determined I was about my education. Every year on Career day when guest speakers would come to my high school and talk about their field of work, I would pay very close attention because I knew that in order to succeed in life you need to make a few sacrifices. When I graduated from high school I honestly felt I was one step closer to achieving my dream. I knew the road would be tough but “when the road gets tough the tough gets going”. So far City Tech has been great because all of my professors are really good at their job and they even go beyond to making sure that I am learning the right material that I need to know. I have a few goals in life and I couldn’t have been in a better place then City Tech to achieve it all. I want to make sure that when I am married someday and hopefully have kids that I wont have to struggle financially. Education is priceless and I am going to make sure that I leave a legacy here at City Tech. I want to be remembered for my hardworking ethics and hopefully i can inspire a few people along the road.

Pursuing a career in Communication Design by Marcus Lamothe

My name is Marcus Lauren Lamothe. I am currently eighteen years old and attending New York City College of Technology. The official name of the degree that I am pursuing is a Bachelor in Communication Design. With the skills that gain from my courses at City Tech, I will be able to do a lot more in the means of designing various things such as beautiful logos for companies. I feel that Communicative Design is the best for me because it allows me to go further in depth about my passion within the design field. I’ve always been passionate about various forms of art ever since I was young. A few other reasons I went into this major is so I could share my creativity with the world and leave my landmark on tomorrow’s society. In this essay, I will discuss the following: I will provide some background on Communicative Design, my reasons for why I chose this major and how it connects me as an artist, and explain how I plan to excel in my future career.

Second, what is Communicative Design you may ask? Well, in small terms, Communicative Design is the combination of technology and design used as an alternative means of communication with others. Some examples of these would be T.V. commercials, advertisements, and other sources which would then be used to convey or promote a message to others. According to the City Tech College Catalog, “Graduates of the Communicative Design bachelor of technology (Btech) degree program are prepared to obtain employment as designers, junior art directors, and art directors in advertising, graphic designers, art directors, web designers, broadcast designers, animators and game graphics designers” (City Tech Catalog 200). In other words, with a Bachelor degree in Communicative Design, you will be able not only  learn about various forms of visual communication but also, you will have a large array of career possibilities that you can access due to all of the knowledge and experience that you’ve gained. Also, this career path mostly caters to those who have creative and expansive minds to conjure up new, innovative content that the world hasn’t seen before. In a way, I plan to be a “Steve Jobs of Design” in the near future, as in becoming a great innovator in the Graphic Design industry. One of the benefits of graduating after finishing  four years in Communication Design, according to the City Tech College Catalog, “graduates of the program have been employed by such organizations as Jc Penny, ABC-TV, SONY, Saatchi and Saatchi Advertising, Marriott, Book of the Month Club, DC Comics, Metropolitan Transit Authority, Simon & Schuster, McGraw-Hill, Draft-FCB Advertising, Fairchild Publications, Citicorp, Grey Advertising and many others” (City Tech Catalog 200). From this statement alone, you can see that a career in Communicative Design allows you to fully explore your creativity in ways not seen before. The more that I learn about what I could do in my chosen major, the more invested I become towards my career goal. This also shows that there are many open doors for new designers to make a visual difference in our society. The most important thing to me as a soon to be member of society is to do a job that I love, not one that I will regret doing.

Though with the challenges of many career fields, Communication Design is not an easy job to get into. Along with a powerful, creative mind, you have to be willing to work extremely hard and even do multiple tasks at once. There is a lot of pressure that I will have to endure but I’m sure that when the time comes, I’ll be ready for anything. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “Employment of graphic designers is projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 – 2022, slower than then the average for all occupations. Graphic designers are expected to face strong competition for all available positions” (U.S. Sect. 5). In other words, the demand for Graphic Designers are estimated to greatly increase by each year so there will be a small gap for new designers to enter into the industry and show the world their creativity. When I was in highschool, I became more aware of the risk of entering this industry but, even with all the potential dangers of doing so, I wasn’t afraid of what I would have to face in the near future. I’m confident in my skills as a designer and I’ve come too far to just give up just because the task at hand maybe too difficult. According to an article on Graphic Design, “ When we think of Graphic Communications(which we don’t very often), newspapers and magazines usually come to mind but, the industry is much broader than this initial thought” (Cary, 24). In a sense, there is so much more to Graphic Design than what most people thought because, Graphic Design is shown in many forms such as Building Design and the creation of advertisements or commercials that are later released to the public. After reading this article, I also learned a bit more about Communication Design after seeing how it could be applied to other real world aspects within our daily lives.

In conclusion, I believe that Communication Design is the best path for me because, I have always loved to draw and show my creativity to others so I decided to go along this road. In this day and age, our world is lacking the same spark or amazement that is use to have. What do I mean by this? Without Communication Design(or Graphic Design), our world would be bland and grey, just more of the same scenery everywhere you go. I said to myself, “If I am going to choose a career that I will be doing for the rest of my life, I want to pursue a career that enjoy and love”. As for my current plans to pursue my career in Communication Design, I will complete my last three years at City Tech and then, I plan to work  for big name companies such as Sony and FOX to advertise or help in the creation of new series’. I’ve already learned many of the basics of design and technology but, after my time at City Tech, I will have all the skills I need to excel in my career. Every year, there are more and more designers that steps up to create a visual change in our society and I plan to do just that. I’m glad that I among many other individuals has the chance to make their passion into a lifelong career. That’s why I decided to go to college in the first place, to aid me in my goal to change the world.

Importance of Computer Programming by Sher Syed

I believe that one’s future depends on what he/she do today. I study at New York City College of Technology (City Tech). My major is computer information systems (CIS). It is under the Computer System Technology Department, which belongs to the School of Technology and Design. I am getting a AAS degree in CIS at City Tech and after that, I will transfer to Baruch to get a bachelors degree in CIS (Btech) because I want to graduate from a higher rank college. After my studies, I will become a contract programmer that work for other companies through contracts and I will also start my own company where programmers will be recruited and help to find jobs with fair pay rate. Moreover it will help to decrease the number unemployment in America. Before coming to America, I had already taken computer courses in Pakistan. I was appointed as an assistant of my computer teacher because of my good grades in computer course. My brother used to teach me about programming and guided me on what to do next in college. Furthermore, I believe this is best career for me because I have been interested in computers since childhood. Moreover, there are good job opportunities, follow my brother’s footsteps and technology has been developed lately. With that said, in this essay my goal will be to explain the background information of my major (CIS), my reasons for selecting this major, and the things that I will do to be excellent in my career that I choose and also support these with the textual evidence that I researched on.

In computer information systems, you basically learn about different computer programming languages and about business management. After graduation, the options you get in this career are “computer programming, database programming and administration, web programming, and systems/network administration and support” (City Tech 222). You don’t get high pay rate job as programmer right after the graduation. You need to have at least 5 years experience to get higher pay rate job. Firstly, you start as a tester then you get experience from projects and other companies hire you based on your resume. To become an IT manager it takes 7-10 years of experience. In programming, there is a new team that is recently introduced called digital team. It’s not common right now but the idea is spreading. Its main purpose is to handle the main web of the company (basically administrator) and look over other programmers that are working on the project. From getting a CIS degree, you can also start your own business by having a good business knowledge that you learned from your courses of CIS. I want to study hard and spend extra time to study to improve my education at City Tech.

Interest in computers since childhood and good opportunities for job made me choose to do CIS. When I was 7 years old it was first time I saw computer in my life. It made me excited due to the functions that it performs. By the time passes I wanted to learn more about it and wanted to learn how to use it. Then I began to learn about computers in elementary school in Pakistan. At that time, the technology was not really well developed and had really slow computers with less features, comparing to technology now a days. I learned basics of using computer, then I began to use painting application in computer for fun. When I reached in fifth grade, I learned using Microsoft Excel. I learned, how to make report cards for school and I helped teacher in making report cards and I joined computer club and was appointed as an assistant of my computer professor. From that day I set my goal to become a computer programmer. I also have interest in business but I want to combine computer programming and business as my career. I’m still thinking about a business idea that was never been introduced about computer programming. This major contains both aspects that I want to learn about. According to City Tech catalog, “ understanding current business practices in computer system technology” (City Tech 222). Currently, this major helps you to understand about business and also about computer programming. Computer programming has more job opportunities comparing to past few years because of the development in technology. According to the occupational outlook handbook, “ [the] employment of computer programmers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Computer programming can be done from anywhere in the world, so companies sometimes hire programmers in countries where wages are lower” (United States par.6). This shows that job opportunities in computer programming are increasing really fast as compared to other jobs and this job can be done from any part of the world so people from other countries also get opportunities to get a job as computer programmer that can contribute to the innovative ideas about computer programming. Furthermore, “nationally, the demand for computer information system analysts, specialist, and managers is predicted to increase from 274,000 in 2008 to 402,000 by 2018” (Lodgher 1). So, we can see that computer programming has more job opportunities and also requires innovative skills to do the job.

Another reason why I choose this major is because I inspire my brother and want to follow his footsteps. When I was in fourth grade my brother bought a computer in his 9th grade. He had really interest in technology. He always locked up his room and did experiments on his computer. I always observed him while he was using computer and learnt how to use computer. He chose to do computer science and became a computer programmer. He is working as a programmer. When I told him that I am also going to do computer programming he decided to teach me Java (a computer language used for programming). He is still teaching me about programming and shares his projects with me so I can learn about programming from it. He also teaches me how to act as professional and ways to impress the people interview you. Since childhood I was inspired by from my brother’s achievements and wanted to become like him. When I lost my father, my brother left his studies and tried to find a good job. At that time he was working at a gas station. He realized that it’s not going to be enough to survive. He tried to apply for a job as a computer programmer. After a month he got a job at Maine and he used his own knowledge of computer programming to get a job because he didn’t do much courses in college so he had to rely on what he learned on his own. This evokes interest in me to become like my brother but he wanted to me to study and get a degree that he couldn’t get. I want to get degree in CIS to fulfill my brother’s desire. He spent his life to fulfill responsibility as a brother and son. Now I believe it’s my turn to fulfill my duty as a brother and help my brother to take care to family. So I chose this major because I idolize my brother and want to fulfill desire to get a degree in CIS.

The technology is developing really fast and computers are taking over many jobs. Due to the development in technology there are changes occurring in computer programming and it requires innovative skills. According to Lodgher, “smart organizations however use technologies to innovate and to move up the chain from cutting costs to enhancing products to reaching new customers” (Lodgher 4). In other words computer programming one needs innovative skills because technology is developing, and for this purpose innovative minds are required that could lead to the development of the world. Furthermore, Lodgher explained, “ these technologies provide innovative ways of enhancing and changing everyday systems, making them more intelligent and easy to use” (Lodgher 2). This tells that new technologies are used in innovative ways that helps to develop the computer-programming field and increase the knowledge of programmers that use these new technologies. As the technology developing programmers need to have innovative brains because they have to “work alone, but sometimes with other computer specialists on large projects” (United States, “Work Environment” par.2). Similarly as a programmer you normally work alone and need to have innovative brain to achieve your goal. With that said technology is developing day by day and computers are taking over some jobs, innovative minds are required to develop the technology fields.

All in all, this essay emphasizes the importance of becoming a computer programmer for me. I have to fulfill my brother’s desire and to fulfill my responsibility of taking care of my family with my brother. To excel my studies first I have to get AAS degree in CIS. After that I will transfer to other top college and get a bachelors degree in CIS. Then I will do internship job which is required for this major and for my good resume. I will also start a business that will be really different and will include computer programming. I will do that business and computer programming together. My dream job is to become a senior programmer in the top company of the world with high pay rate. There is a lot of competition in this field but I have to fight through to achieve my goal. There is nothing that one can’t do.
