- Look over the texts from last class and think about them in relation to your own educational journey.

Activities
WRITING: Genre Analysis
- Respond to the Discussion Question “Thinking about Genres”:
- What genres do you enjoy when you read, listen to music, watch movies, etc. Make a short list.
- Choose one of your favorite genres and write a paragraph discussing the purpose, audience, tone, and style of that genre. Also, explain why you enjoy this genre.
- Write a Post that does the following (approximately 200-250 words):
- Think about the pieces by Douglass, Malcolm X, and Jang. Although these pieces are very different, they are all education narratives: what do you think puts them into this category? In other words, what do they have in common? Share your thoughts on this. In your response, include a list of ingredients that you think are essential to this type of writing.
- As you prepare to write your own educational narrative, set a timer and spend 5-10 minutes brainstorming a quick list of stories, ideas, questions, and moments that are important to your experience.
- Finally, think about which one of these texts might serve as a model for your own narrative. The story in the model text does not need to be like yours. Rather, you like the way the author composes their narrative (their techniques, strategies, and style), and you would like to emulate their storytelling.

The genres i enjoy reading are science fiction and folktales. For science fiction it builds up a lot of suspense and really makes you wonder what is actually happening. I find this to be super interesting and entertaining. it goes into depth about time travel teleportation etc and has a overall plot that goes more and more into wonder. The type of music i enjoy listening to is hip pop. Movie wise i would say horror. The education narratives written fall under the same category due to the fact they all cover the topic of education and growth. What they have in common is there is a certain foundation you need in life to exceed drastically.
Science fiction is a really popular genre, isn’t it? It’s helpful, too, in filling out your description, when you include specific features, such as teleportation. You might consider some more specific details in your summary of the common elements of the education narratives (?).
They are all put into the same category because all authors discuss their personal experiences with education. They told a story about an event that impacted their education. They were all able to bring to life that exact moment and make the audience be a part of the story by explaining the setting and the environment at the time.

In my school they divided students by their academics. I was placed in a 01 class for my first time in about 3rd grade. I struggled drastically with such a huge transition however I had to overcome struggles and ever since I stayed in a 01 class for the rest of my elementary and middle school experience.
I hate reading/English because at a young age I never was in tune with these subjects. I was very shy and did not speak up when I needed the help most. I can see how it drastically affects me today when it comes to reading and writing.
I enjoyed how Anita Jang composed her narrative. I was able to easily visualize the painting in her parents room. Her details were very clear so it allowed me to be a part of the story. I felt as if I was right next to her. I also felt as if the story was very personal so I was able to confide with the author. It felt like I had a connection with her even though I never met her a day in my life. Her details and how unrestricted she was while telling her story is something that I will love to do in my narrative. When I say unrestricted I felt like the story was very personal and she was very open to let the readers experience such a private moment.
I made a comment on a discussion with similar questions, should I copy and paste it here? I’m sorry but seeing the questions more than once make things a little confusing as to understanding what my assignment is.
Yes, understood. Me too! Unfortunately for you all (especially) this is the first semester I’ve used the OpenLab website for students to post their writing and it’s very confusing.
I will try to streamline and make easier the posting process within the next week.
