The low-stakes assignment for Monday, Oct 25:
Create a free Academic Pass account for free digital access the New York Times with your City Tech email.
Once you have your academic pass account to NYTimes.com:
- use the Search tool to find OPINION articles on ANY topics that you are interested in, academic or not.
- select a Date Range to make sure the article is relatively current (e.g. one month, one year, one week) and
- select the Opinion Section to make sure that it is an opinion article.
Find TWO recent (within the last year) Opinion pieces in the NYTimes.com ON THE SAME TOPIC. (This doesn’t have to be the topic that you end up writing about for your Unit 2 Op-Ed article assignment.) No LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
- For EACH Opinion article, summarize the MAIN point, the ARGUMENT. The shorter and more concise your summary is, the better. If you can get your summary down to 1 or two sentences, that’s professional level work.
- Then, write a paragraph (~250 words, INFORMAL, LOW-STAKES) comparing and contrasting the two positions.
Use this as an exercise in taking a closer look at two different points of view on the same or a similar topic. (3 points)
Post the assignment on Blackboard by clicking on the “Unit 2: Op-Ed Article Assignment” section in the green menu bar on the left and then clicking on the title: “Low-Stakes Exercise homework (3pts).”
Because this is informal, low-stakes writing, you may write your submission in the text box below if you like.
