The three texts by Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, and Anita Jang all share their respective educational journeys, moments in their lives where they found the motivation to pursue education. From what I have seen in these texts, some necessary parts of an educational narrative are to explain the personal introduction to the topic of interest, explaining the steps that were taken to pursue this knowledge, and how that knowledge and the pursuit of it impacted ones life. The order might be different but the parts are there.
Brainstorming:
- Cousins were working towards an engineering degree and they showed me a video about the project they were working on.
- I would look at machines and mechanisms with great interest but it wasn’t until I was introduced to the world of robotics that my interest grew into a passion for knowledge.
- My mother always wanted me to try my best at everything I did, and I always saw her in a good mood whenever I would excel in academics. My want to make those I care about happy took over me and set me on this path of learning skills to succeed.
- Every new thing I learned would make me want to learn more, applying the skills I’ve learned makes me feel accomplished.
I liked the structure of Malcom X’s educational narrative, as it kept me engaged and offered a good flow for the narrative. I especially liked how Malcom X used anecdotes to reveal how education and the lack of it affected thoughts and daily life. While the quality of the writing, with transitions and sentence formations, will differ I feel like the flow of the narrative would like me. I also like how towards the end of the narrative the author decided to explain how his education changed his feelings towards the world he lived in, how the knowledge he gained helped him formulate ideas and come to meaningful conclusions.
I agree!
