Reflection #2 (7/30)

Read the following quote by Dr. Pamela Brown, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs:

“Learning is a source of hope for a better future. It requires hard work and sacrifice which can be even more difficult in challenging times. Your time in college is also your opportunity to connect with others, lift your spirit, enrich your life, and develop the skills and knowledge to make a difference in your community.”

Choose a question below and write a reflection in the comment box below this post.

  • What life experiences have prepared me for college?
  • When I have been faced with a difficult situation, what strategies did I use to find a solution?
  • How will I create positive academic habits for myself?

I will create positive academic habits for myself by managing my time.

    • Carolyn McGown

This is easier said than done. We all thinK, “Gosh, I’ll just plan more carefully and do what I need.” But it IS harder than that. Figuring how to get everything done is tough. I am not saying yu can’t do it (I believe you can), but you should also expect to have some times of doubt.

    • Genesis Garcia

      That’s a great way

    • Anchita

I would do the same, also I will try to be consistent with it.

  2. Kasim Anderson (Kai)

In all my years on this earth I have faced many problems and dilemnas in my life. It is natural for humans as a species to face problems in our lifespan ranging from small decisions to life changing problems. It is how we overcome those problems that shapes our lives today. When I am faced with a problem, I take a step back and reevaluate my situation. I try to come up with short and long term solutions to the problem I’m faced with, I look at my situation in a different point of view to better formulate my course of action. I also try to use resources I have available to me to solve the problem, and if all my methods fail or not reaching a conclusive solution, I will reach out to a third party for help on the situation.

    • Carolyn McGown

That’s a pretty healthy – and mature – way to view life and the challenges that come along. If you can maintain some distance when things “go awry,” and see the problem from a different angle, you’re more likely to find a solution – or at least work through the difficult time with some grace.

    • Nilkiaris Arjona (Kiki)

good way to overcome problems and this is a good type of mindset

    • Krittika Sharma

I love how you mentioned that you are willing to ask for help from a third party and this is what most people try to avoid, without realizing that a third person’s way of seeing things may change your way of looking at the problem which can even give you an easy answer to your problem.

    • Samiya S.

      Very healthy

  3. Krittika Sharma

When I have been faced with a difficult situation, I normally tend to sit in a quiet place, calm my mind, and think about the situation as a whole. For example, what caused the problem and what options do I have to lead it to a solution are the most repeated question on my mind. The best worked way would be to write it down in a piece of paper and think deeply of each way outs. And also as a human being my intuition helped me out in those situations quite a bit. So I feel, as long as you can confront the whole situation with a calm brain ( without getting angry or crying), solutions are bound to be out.

life experiences that helped me prepare for college was learning that i will have to do things on my own. even though im doing things on my own that doesn’t mean i can’t ask for help when i really need it. i didn’t go into college knowing everything which is why asking questions is ideal so i can feel prepared and learn more on things that could possibly help me in the future.

    • Genesis Garcia

That’s a great way to think, keep it up.

    • Kasim Anderson (Kai)

Going in with a open mind willing to take more info in is good mindset to have!

    • Carolyn McGown

Asking for help isn’t always easy. We don’t like admitting that we can’t do it. And we tend to think that no-one else needs help. But the peopler who do the best in college (and in most of life) are those people that figure out how to get help.

    • Anchita

Yes! Unlike high school were teachers and parents are always behind us. I guess we have to be quite independent now.

  5. Genesis Garcia

To start creating a positive academic habit,I will have to start learning how to get less overwhelmed overstuff that do have a solution, and knowing that sometime things are not gonna go my way, and that will help me understand how to handle those frustrating situations in the future.

  6. Minerva Guerrero

How will I create positive academic habits for myself?

To create positive academic habits is necessary to plan strategies that help me to create self-discipline. I have to get use to follow certain schedule and organize the things I have to do during one day. In that way it would be much easier to adjust my study hours and I have to stick to that schedule.

    • Andre

Yes I think having your own academic habit can be very beneficial as it is a better way for you to learn and understand

    • Carolyn McGown

It also may help to think about it “one week at a time.” Not four whole months of college. Break it all down into one week at a time – go to those classes, do that homework, meet with those professors = one week done.

It’s a lot of smaller steps to get it all done well.

  7. Andre

There have been several in highschool where I had been going though a rough patch academically and certain things I just couldn’t quite figure out. Over time I learned to approach things in a way that works the best for me as apprise to the ideal approach. I learned that being able to do things in a way that is comfortable enough for me is what will help me succeed.

  8. Samiya S.

    • I think just growing up with a lot of people and meeting a lot of different people gave me patience and remaining open minded for college.
    • I relax and remember its okay to have a hard time, its normal and I try not to overreact on the matter
    • I would say just not putting myself down, because that’ll play into my mindset
    • Andre

I agree I feel like your environment growing up can shape the way you approach certain things

    • Carolyn McGown

EVERYONE is in the same boat. Some of us are better students, some of us are chattier, . . . but all first-term college students have (mostly) the same major concerns – will they fit in? will then find friends? will they do okay? . . . .

Even the person who “looks” ike they have it “all together” worries about these things.

    • Laurel Bay

In my opinion, your approach is both practical and pragmatic, and it accurately reflects the experiences you’ve had.

  9. Sandupa Sanudaya

I guess one thing that has prepared me for college was being a part of a JROTC unit in high school. It helped me gain a lot of experience with teamwork, working under pressure, and time management, specially when I had to manage my schoolwork along with all the work from JROTC. I guess I try to stay calm in a difficult situation and try to prioritize more important things if it’s possible. Otherwise I try to find help online or ask someone for help. And to create some positive habits, I’ll try to make a schedule and stick to it and definitely go to tutoring.

    • Kasim Anderson (Kai)

I never got to do JROTC but, my time out in the Fleet those skills installed into us that will let us have success!

    • Carolyn McGown

This is strong background experience – having different kinds of things to finish, working with different kinds of people, having several deadlines . . . That’s a lot of what college is about.

  10. Justin Nuñez

Q: What life experiences have prepared me for college?

A: I would say taking AP classes since they are basically a college class in high school

    • Talisha Rahman

Your experience with AP classes will give you a strong foundation for success in college!

    • Alexis Cordoba

I agree although I didn’t take AP classes I’ve seen how the workload prepares you for college and it even gives you a head start

  11. Laurel Bay

Experiences such as excelling in academic challenges, balancing various responsibilities, and developing resilience have equipped me with the skills needed for college. Additionally, my involvement in extracurricular activities and managing personal finances have prepared me for the independence and diverse interactions I’ll encounter in higher education.

    • Talisha Rahman

Sounds like you are doing a great job by developing a wide range of skills and experiences to prepare for college!

  12. Alexis Cordoba

To create a positive academic environment, I will try to focus on my mental and spiritual health. I want to make sure that I get enough rest each day at least 8 hrs. I want to continue working on my understanding of the Bible and that will help me to have positive thoughts.
