This picture uses the rule of thirds to place the main subject. He was i under the sunshine which gives him a little hope. The man at the background is under the sunshine as well. The light brings out the two man among the shadow.

As you say the light creates a relationship between the two men. There is also a strong contrast of scale which adds a sense of space to the photo.
