You describe the photo in good detail. And certainly the two compositional principles you picked out are central to success of this photo. Richards fills the frame-the entire photograph is active. And it is in the relationship of figure to ground-the boy to the funeral- that the meaning of the photo is to be found. it is the loss of the young people-the children who won’t know their parents that a tragedy like 9/11 that killed many people in mid-life is felt.
