Exhibit Review

The trip to the Museum of the City of New York, the class visited two exhibits. One was called “Interior Lives Contemporary Photographs of Chinese New Yorkers” and the second was “ Through a different lens ” exhibit. The interior lives contemporary photographs of Chinese New York’s were created by Thomas Holton , Annie Ling , and An Rog Xu. In the first exhibit that we visited I would describe it as a large room that is very organized, comfortable, space , quiet , clean , and welcoming . There were good amount of pictures that were in the exhibit and one side of the room caught my attention. There were different kinds of photographs that were taken but most of them were taken inside small apartments to show how some Chinese New Yorkers were living. A lot of the photos were taken around 2010 – 2013. The second exhibit has different rooms. A tv room and a room that shown Kubrick’s photographs. The rooms was small and cozy. Every photo was in black and white because back then there wasn’t a lot of color camera invented. The walls are red which brought out more contrast of each photo and also brighter than the first exhibit. Each side of the wall had there own story and personal model like the one Kubrick took of rocky without any clothes on.

One side of the interior lives exhibit shown a timeline from children growing up to an adult which I find pretty impressive. The photographer that done that was Thomas Holton. As soon as you walk into the first exhibit you can see babies, more further you’ll see children then further you’ll see the kids in college. I think Holton project was about growth, and time lapse from year to year. I feel like Holton’s intention was to show the viewer a timeline of a person life. Holton succeed at making me feel something as in don’t take life for granted and change will come. In  Kubrick’s exhibition I feel like Kubrick describes New York as a entertaining place  because most of his photographs was famous people and playful subjects like multiple of dogs riding in the backseat of a car.

Lastly, one of the photographs that I love and really admire is Thomas Holton “ Mother’s Lab, 2011 “. This photograph has a medium shot that shown 3 family members, A mother, a daughter, and a grandpa. The photograph also shown an eye level viewpoint because it’s straightforward and had some shallow spacing. The reason why I love this photo because I feel like Holton is showing 3 generations of each person in one picture. The photograph make me feel to don’t take life for granted and enjoy the littlest moments with family.

You make a good point that the Holton photos are about growing up. It is remarkable to see the kids as babies and then as teens.

Certainly Kubrick’s New York was very different from the New York that Thomas Holton captures not just because they were taken in different time periods but also because the points of view are so different. The Holton photos are meant to reveal something personal about the Lams while most of the Kubrick photos told more public stories.
