Homework 1

The photo that I choose and that caught my attention was Michael Kenna and his photograph of the twin towers. The location was at lower Manhattan and this photo was taken before the event of 7/11 happen.  I feel the purpose of this image was show viewers the beauty of how tall these two twin towers were, the way it stood out from the bottom to above. The photo is black and white which captures and even stronger feeling into the photo.

The three compositional principles that I could say about this photo which are diagonals, fill the frame and patterns and repetition. I say diagonals due to the way the angle of the towers are in the photo and also, fill the frame because the way the twin towers are placed in the middle of the frame. Last but not least, patterns and repetition because the twin towers are both exactly alike which which shows a pattern. The feeling I felt towards this photo is mournful due to because of the story that happen to the twin towers on the year 2001. Also, on the photo was just a year before the event happen which is still shocking till even today. As soon as I saw the photo, it hit me directly with a strong emotion/feeling because the way the towers were and how magnificently beautiful they were. It may not look in black and white but in does still make a great photo with a strong feeling and strong emotion that it gives you as soon as seeing it at the moment.

The twin towers are two strong diagonals in this photo. these diagonals create a strong sense of deep space with perspective. The towers themselves are very dark with little detail so pattern is less important here than it might be.
