    • I think this text has strong religious and political significance.
    • The content of the article is mainly about Malcolm’s experience and how he lived in a country under the influence of religion and how his thoughts were influenced by various doctrines.
    • The body of the text is the article and contains the tone of propaganda.
    • Malcolm was held in jail for theft. Therefore, under the influence of Islamism, he began to learn to read in order to better understand pan-Islamism.
    • I think Malcolm’s purpose in writing this article is to make it very obvious to readers that he is a racist personality.
    • Malcolm’s narrative is very different from tan’s or Antonio’s. Malcolm as a leader of the black movement. His narratives are very political and Islamist. And what tan told Antonio was all about their lives.

1.What I think is that Malcolm X was passionate to teach himself to be more acknowledged even when he couldn’t finish school. He was belligerent to push himself to be someone great

2.Since Malcolm X only completed eighth grade, the book mostly focuses on his struggles with reading and writing and how these affected the course of his life.

3.The genra is a literary composition

4.What motivated Malcolm X is that when he tried to compose letters to Mr. Elijah Muhammad, he found it irritating and uninformed.

5.He wrote this to demonstrate that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. He wants others to know that if he can accomplish it, so can they, even if he was illiterate and lacked the skills to write or read.

6.His story is comparable to Tan’s and Vargas’ since they all make similar comments about how they view the world differently as a result of how specific events have affected them.

1.I think this text is inspiring. The way that Malcolm X taught himself how to read and write is impressive.

2.This text is mostly about how Malcom X learned how to read and write in prison. By doing that, he was able to learn a lot about the world. Reading and writing also made him feel like he was free even though he was in prison and made him open his eyes about injustices that communities dealt with.

3.This text is a literacy narrative . The tone is serious.

4.What motivated Malcolm X to learn to read is the fact that he felt envious about how knowledgeable Bimbi was and he wanted to be able to express himself in a way that people could understand him.

5.I think Malcolm X wrote this article to show people that everything is possible if you just put effort into it. Also, he wanted to show people that you don’t have to go to college to be educated and have knowledge. The intended audience is people who didn’t have the chance to go to college.

6.Amy Tan, Vargas and Malcolm X have different literacy narratives. Amy Tan chose an English major in college because she wanted to do what she felt was right for her, even though people told her otherwise. Vargas chose to be good at speaking, reading and writing because he felt like that was gonna help him become a good citizen and ease his life in the US. Malcolm X chose to learn how to read and write because he was a very curious person and wanted to learn more about the world that surrounds him but also be able to express himself clearly.

    • I thought this was a very informative text on history and how much you can learn from reading, you can learn various information that could expand the way you think
    • This text is about a man by the name of Malcom Little know as Malcolm X and he was imprisoned but to spend his days there he would either go to the library or stay in his bunk and just read books. He vocalizes about how informative and beneficial reading could be, how much you could learn. Furthermore he even speaks upon  the stories he’s read about the whites and the blacks, and how the slave owners would treat the slave.
    • The genre of this text is a literacy narrative, the tone of this text is formal
    • The drive to want to learn more words made him want to start reading books like the dictionary so that he could better himself
    • I feel like he wrote this article for many reasons first reason, to show people you should never want to stop trying to learn because by picking up a single book you could learn so much. Second reason, to expanded your horizons on words and how much you could learn from reading, could expand your vocabulary. Also, how much history you could learn in a book, details you’ve probably have never heard from before could learn the truth in the stories.
    • The intended audience is for those whom are imprisoned and feel like they have nothing to for themselves
    • Malcolm’s narrative is dissimilar from Tan and Vargas because he is more on the political side than Tan and Vargas whose narratives are more about their journeys and experiences

I did enjoy this because I think reading is something that can easily be taken for granted. While reading can be for entertainment purposes, reading should also be done for educational purposes and most people tend to miss out on that aspect. It seems like we don’t practice that skill enough.

It is mostly about the journey of reading and how reading was an important tool to Malcom X during prison. It began with little to no words to being able to read and eventually write. As he read he began to think about the many perspectives of writers in the reading and he noticed they were mostly white with this he realizes how much power he now has by being able to read and write.

The genre is a short story and the tones is serious

Malcom X received letters and was unable to express himself, his frustration led to motivation and therefore he wanted to learn how to read.

Malcom X wrote this article to expose his way of learning to read and most importantly to show the goals he set himself and was able to achieve. The bigger picture would be to not look down on people who do not have credentials because Malcom X was able to write speeches and express himself well after learning how to read and write. However, he still had his ideas; he just needed the extra tools in order to express what was on his mind. His intended audience would be people who want to learn how to read and write in order to become a better version of themselves.

Malcolm X’a literacy narrative is similar to Tan because both of the writers are not expected to become good at writing yet they prove how well they can be. Tan is not expected to be a writer because her academic skills show that she was better at math and science however she decides to become better at english and even has a career in writing. For Malcom X he was just learning to read and write however he taught himself these skills and eventually became someone that has known speeches and is famous.

    1. I liked this text a lot because i like Malcom X a lot. He was a great man and continues to shine and teach everyone even after he has been gone.
    2. This is about Malcom’s time in prison, what he spent doing there and all about the things he learned there. He goes on about the things he’s read and how he used to read. Like here he says, “Fortunately, right outside my door was a corridor light that cast a glow into my room. The glow was enough to read by, once my eyes adjusted to it. So when ‘lights out’ came, i would sit on the floor where i could continue reading in that glow.” Nothing was gonna stop him from doing what he wanted to.
    3. This is an autobiography. He is talking about his own life being recalled by himself. No one else is writing it for him its just Malcom himself.
    4. He would write letters but get frustrated at the fact that he wasn’t able to say what he really wanted to say he was being held back. He also just wanted to become a better writer and reader, where he learned that at his time in Charlestown prison.
    5. He just wanted to write about how far he has come i think. From barely being able to understand the books he was reading, he has come a long way and wants to show people. His intended audience was everyone but probably more aimed towards people who were once just like him, to show that they dont have to be limited just like he once was.
    6. I find them similar since they all sorta had an approach to reading and writing in their own ways. Malcom couldn’t write very well as well as read but he learned as he kept going and was intrigued by it. Vargas had his own upcoming with reading and writing and always loved it and was good at it, and it had a lot to do with how he learned it all.

-I find the text to convey hope and determination. I feel as though this writing will inspire others to not give up on their education or their need for knowledge and how they should keep striving forward.

-This text is about Malcom X is his struggles when it comes to finding a way to better his reading and writing. Eventually, he found a method that helped him boarded his vocabulary and went on to reading different pieces in his cell. Later on, he goes on to tell the reader the hardships that comes with black erasures in history and how white nationalist and people in power would rewrite books. Those same books were given to students.

-Autobiography and the tone is serious yet casual. Almost as if he was talking to us in private about his findings. He also sounds extremely wise.

-His mentor. In the beginning of the text, Malcom had identified his feelings towards his mentor’s wiseness as jealously, and how he strived to know more information.

-I believed Malcom wrote this article to prove how anyone can read and learn. How you can do your own method of learning and research, just like how Malcom found out about all the erasure in history books.

-I feel as though Malcom narrative is more factual than personal at times. Unlike Amy or Vargas who shares mostly personal experience to help shape their ideas, Malcom had to do research on the injustice of people of color and as well as the history of slavery.

  8. Tonny Lin

1.I think this text is interesting in a way that it shows people can learn just from reading and the importance of reading

2.Malcom X’s literacy journey from only being able to complete 8th grade and being in prison. He started reading during the time in the prison and during those times he improve himself as a reader and writer

3.It is a literacy narrative and the is in a formal tone

4.To be able to write to Mr.Elijah Muhammad, as he is frusted for not being able to express what he wanted to coney in letters

5.He wrote this article to show that it don’t matter where or when it is you can always develop yourself as a reader and is it never too late. For people who think it is too late to learn to read and write

    6. Malcolm choose to read and write because he want to express himself while Tan face many english and Vargas wanting to hide himself

  9. Taharqa Rogers

    1. This text shines a light on religion and history that has been rewritten. This is a powerful piece of text that inspires one to be educated.
    2. This text is mostly about Malcolm X’s path to self-education with the motivation of wanting to connect with Elijah Muhammad. He documents his findings in books and Muhammad’s teachings.
    3. The genre is Autobiography.
    4. Malcolm X wanted to express himself more when writing to Elijah Muhammad.
    5. Malcom X wrote this article to expose, inspire and inform people of any background and color to think. Think about history, politics, etc. Even the little things.
    6. Malcolm X’s literacy narrative is similar to the narrative of Tan and Vargas in the way that they all tell the story from their perspective. The narratives are also different because Malcolm’s writing audience is broader. Tan and Vargas are writing to immigrant Americans of Asian backgrounds.

    •  I thought it was an ok text I didn’t hate it but its not something I would read again
    • Learning to read by Malcom X is about Malcom’s self education journey while being incarcerated. His motive and how he believe reading is informative is what pushed him through
    • Learning to read By Malcom X is an autobiography
    • I think that Malcom X learned to read to better himself and to understand Islam more
    • i think that Malcom wrote this article to motivate others and I believe his intended audience was everyone
  11. Allison Tang

    1. I liked that it was written from first point of view.
    2. The text is about Malcom X and his determination towards becoming self educated. He writes in detail about all the things he learns during his time in prison.
    3. The genre is autobiography. The tone is serious.
    4. He wanted to be able to express himself better.
    5. I think Malcolm X wrote this article to inspire others to read.
    6. It’s similar to Vargas’s because its in chronological order.

This text was a bit difficult for me to read because I didn’t understand all of the vocabulary but nonetheless I still enjoyed it. I feel like it was real, straight to the point and very respectable.

This chapter was about how Malcom X’s experiences and obstacles formed him into the reader and writer he became. He taught himself to be literate by reading and copying the dictionary and the only reason he had the time and concentration for this was because he was incarcerated. At the end of the chapter in the last sentence he stated himself “ Where else but in prison would I have been able to attack my ignorance by being able to study intensively sometimes as much as fifteen hours a day?” This shows that even he recognizes that his time in prison made him a better reader, writer and communicator.

The genre of this text is a Personal narrative and I would say the tone is personal. I say this because he shared personal experiences he went through while in prison such as how he fell in love with reading and he would get mad when lights went out at 10pm because it interrupted his reading. But I would also say the text is serious and informational because he shared the horrific things that he read history that white people have done and that’s why he doesn’t like them.

Malcoms motivation to learn how to read came from feeling suppressed because his limited vocabulary and he was unable to express his thoughts and opinions articulately through his writing.

I think Malcom wrote this article to give black people motivation. I think this because he spoke about how he utilized his tough situations in life to better himself for example going to prison and coming out with better communication skills and new ideas. He also spoke about black history which is not taught in schools and how history has been white washed.

Malcom’s literacy narrative is very similar to Tan’s and Vargas because they all shared moments from their life that developed them to the writer and reader they became.

  13. Omar Apreza

what I think about this story is about religion and political freedom on how he was a slave.

when he finished 8th grade he had struggled on reading and writing. Once he was in prison he was working hard on making improvements on his breading and writing.

his genre is it about literacy narrative.

Malcolm X was in prison for being a thief he was frustrated that he wanted to do better and motivated himself to improve on reading and writing.

That he worked hard on his lack of skills during his free time and improved while being in prison over the days.

it different then Tan and Vargas because he had to go through slavery and prison but Tan and Vargas had to go through immigration there a big difference.

  14. Brandon Berdosana

I thought this text was beautiful. It really changed me. I honestly never really touched an Malcolm X text before. I have goose bumps. This text explores Malcolm’s environment and how he’s changed as a person from within because of reading and writing.

This text is mostly about how Malcolm spent his time in prison. He started prison not knowing to read and decided to take a step and actually teach himself to read. He achieves this by being able to recite and read the dictionary and moves and eventually learns about African American history and explores more because of the fact.

I think he wrote this because he wants to spread the message that you achieve anything as long as you invest the time.

The genre is an autobiography. I know this because it’s a famous one. I also know this because Malcolm speaks about his journey in his self-education. The tone of the text is inspirational.

Malcolm learned to read because ” I became increasingly frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to convey in letters that I wrote” and therefore Malcolm developed his reading and writing skills studying the dictionary.

Malcolm wrote this piece so that he was able to share his story with hopes to inspire others just like him. Malcolm was faced with a problem and he choose to solve it. Learning how to read and write helped Malcolm discover who he was, that is what he wants to spread.

His literately narrative is similar to Tan’s because they both wrote literacy narratives to emphasize how important they are. And it reveals a person’s journey through literature. Where they started, and where they ended. They were different because they experienced different issues, but they had the same outcome.
