medium is the message

“The medium is the message”

Understanding the message is based on the Medium, Designers have created art involving at least one of the three texts, image, and layout. If not they might have used all three. It’s very important when it comes to design to incorporate these elements, it influences the public’s perspective and The most important thing is the meaning behind the design. After adding certain elements  “It became a graphic expression and an approbation of their feelings and thoughts” according to Fiore. But what about media and medium, does it influence the message? As technology has evolved the variety of platforms on which one can now publish has an impact on the design itself.

Culture Jamming

Belen Vazquez

Culture Jamming has been a very controversial topic but also a very bold act for many. The Avant-Garde movement that went against many entitled companies’ norms and created a sense of debate and rebellion. Designers took this sense of art direction a bit more seriously to emphasize social and or political issues. Culture jammers held power against big companies and would create questionable design statements to bring up a point. One of the many examples would be this “vandalized” Coca-cola poster. stating the message of “LOVE” within coca-cola, but in reality, what is the message they have been giving the public? Is it really “love” or is it all about money, benefits, and Coca-cola. Culture Jammers created this new environment in which one’s opinion is kept to themselves. But started to become a freedom of expression and art overall.

The influence and new creations of design have always seemed to be introduced by white Designers. Reading “Celebrating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lectures” I’ve come to the same conclusion as Jerome Harris. Many students haven’t been educated as much about African American designers and how they have taken design to another level. Moreover, I’ve heard more about astonishing French designers or white designers in general. We’re so used to hearing about well-educated designers or even those with well-known background history, but what about those who’ve struggled to become recognized? And for those who didn’t receive any formal education and had to self-teach themselves through the basic essentials. Commercial Design has changed its direction nowadays because we have been given the liberty to create art, technology has helped us advance to design, promote and grow. The concept of design has grown in diversity, as JeromeReading Response 6 – Your Initials stated “ the inclusion of more women and people of color would severely shift the understanding of the field, and how people see themselves as practitioners” not only will be introduced to new design but it’ll educate the upcoming generations with all sorts of design from diverse designers.

Typography, merging art/ science and Grid all somehow work together to create the new evolution of the international style of the typography movement in the Bauhuas during the 1920-s to 1940s to the new Swiss Typography embraced by European Modernism in the early 1950s. Designers such as Jan Tschichold and the reading “The Principles of the New Typography “, Karl Gerstner in “Designing Programmes’’, and designer Joseph Muller-Brockman “Grid and design Philosophy all objectively have in common structure and development.  The New typography was a part of the Avant-Garde movement since it was rejecting traditional arrangements and functional structure. Muller’s emphasis on grid usage may create art more organized and legible.

During the New Typography era, Jan Tschichold’s poster on the right shows a great example of all three design systems. Clarity and freedom of art, Design, and Grid. The 1927 “Die Frau Ohne Namen” posters consist of all three philosophies, the layout of the images all align with the concept of the two  focal points, one on the upper right of the poster and the other on the bottom right. The type, as well as most of the images lean towards an upright position while the train and bottom type lead towards the second focal point. The abstract shape  (circle) ties into both focal points as a center of attention. This is where the grid system comes in and how the overall subject is placed, giving it Hierarchy and a clean design.

The Bauhaus was a very influential design movement that changed how designers thought and created new artwork. The Education system was divided into two sections, theoretical studies (the basic laws of design) and “Instruction in form of problems” (understanding ideas and their functions).

Although the Bauhaus instructors taught the basics in theory and led individuals into artistic paths such as (painting, art, film, type, etc) they lacked education in the sense of emphasizing that “art comes from within”. “Whether the finished product is an exercise in ingenuity or a work of art depends on the talent of the individual who creates it”.

Instructors can teach and guide future artists, but it depends on the artist whether they take steps further or get left behind. Like Walter Gropus stated, “Human achievement depends on the proper coordination of all the creative faculties.” Yes, we need to be educated and understand the theory. We must learn the Design language in order for others to understand us.

Language has always been a form of communication, studying semiotics it is clear to say that signs are a form or language which was created with the help of society and how humans have taken and interpreted certain structures in different ways. According to This means this, this means that: A users guide to Semiotics” by Hall Sean. “Signs are not isolated; they are dependent for their meaning on the structures that help to organize them, along with the contexts in which they are read and understood. The ideas and different perspectives that have been created for certain images or objects have been determined by humans and experiences. Sean gave an example of a Stop sign, which can either mean “Danger” or an actual “bus stop”. Color can have an influence based on cultural structures that have been built upon society. Therefore a red stop sign would be to actually stop and be cautious and a yellow stop with an icon of a bus can signify bus stops here. Signs have been a more simplified way of communicating with a background of knowledge already known by a human being. This form of language has positively impacted design since it’s been a faster and easier way to communicate to the public.
