Reading Response 10

Design is something that can benefit many people in different ways. Whether it is through the messages of the design or what the design is being used to promote. It is all-important and helps to get people to view things like race or pollution in new ways than they did before. It can open the eyes of the audience to new ideas. This is why the manifestos Ken Garland from 1964-2020 all talked about the same idea of designers using their designs to help benefit the people and the environment. It can be through creating designs to educate or creating designs to bring awareness to people about problems in the world. It also talked about rejecting the idea of design being used simply for the selfish gain of the designer or other people who want to use it to benefit their selfish desires. Like companies who use designers for self-products that are dangerous to people simply to get a profit.
Of all the manifestos and their ideas of what design should be and what it should not be the 2020 manifesto stood out to me. What stood out to me is the talk in the manifesto about all the bigger things that design can be used for. How it talked about how we should use design to support those in need and to help bring people closer together. This stood out to me because it is something that many designers due not think about. When you design sometimes you become focused simply on how you can benefit yourself and the person you’re creating for. We never really think about how we can use design to help the environment or bring attention to things that may ruin the lives of people and animals either now or in the future. This is something we never really think about but is something we needed to consider more when designing.
Technology change had a major effect on how the manifestos changed over time. The author of each manifesto experienced different types of technology of the year they were creating the manifesto. Such as the creation of the computer which did not exist in, 1964. They also expected too disasters and problems that came about before the creation of each manifesto. Such as the increase in the effects of climate change and the amount of effort being put to stop it. This affected how the authors believed design should be used too and what benefits it could bring to that year due to the changes in technology and problems that are going on during that year.

Reading Response 9

Modernism and postmodernism both were important parts of design that brought a new age of design and changed how it is done. For modernism, it was the experimentation in the arts which allowed new ways of doing art to be born. Postmodernism, it was giving designers the freedom to design in any way they wanted to.
As stated, there were many changes brought about by modernism and postmodernism. It is also known that there were many elements of modernism that were brought to poster modernism. One was the use of multiple art styles and forms in the artwork to create new works of art. Another element was the idea of not having a single them within the art put multiple ones. Another element was the use of dark and light colors in the artwork to create it. Those were the elements from modernism that were used in post-modernist styles.
Postmodernism many elements of it are used today in design work. One is the use of text as an art element within the design. Like having the text look or placed in a certain way that fits with the design. Another element is the use of old art styles within new designs. Such as the use of the style of an old painting to help create a new artwork such as how the painting looks or the colors being used can be put inside a new design to help make it look newer. The final element is the freedom of the artist to express themselves in any way they want to. These are some of the elements that helped to make postmodernism what it is and are some of the elements that still exist today.
As with most things both modernism and postmodernism ended paving, the way for new art ages to begin. Modernism, lasted 10 years going from the 1950s and ending in the 1960s. Postmodernism started in 1970 and ended in 1990 lasting for 20 years. As of now, we are living in the contemporary age of art which was started in 1945. Contemporary art usually is about the ideas and concerns of the artist. But just like most ages of art both may be gone but both have left behind their ideas and principles of art for people to learn from and use if they see fit. Making so even if both these ages of the art have ended they still exist today.

Final Report Outline- JD

Introduction

There is an separation of painting’s and 2d animation in art galleries

Body

  1. Animation is underappreciated and is not seen as important as painting is

  • People can sometimes think of 2d animation as just a cartoon

  • People sometimes judge art based on whether they can relate to it, animation is harder

  • Panting has been around longer, so it is seen as more important

  1. Painting and 2d animation are very similar too each other

  • Both are creating environments on a certain type of canvas

  • Both sometimes focus on a single subject

  • Both are being used to express the views and ideas of the one that is creating them.

  1. The separation of animation history and art history keeps people from seeing 2d animation as the same as the painting they see in galleries

  • Classes mostly focus on the history of art, not on animation

  • Kids are taught what is considered art in classes at an early age

  • Students are taught how to paint, draw and craft stuff in art classes but never about how to do animation unless it’s a class about it.

Reading Response 7- JD

The idea of taking something meaningful and turning it into something profitable has existed for a long time. Cooperation’s due this so that they can turn something popular at the time into something that can be sold by them to the people for a profit. An example of this is the 1950 and 1960s which saw the creation of styles that rebelled against consumerism at that time. It also saw the creation of styles that embraced the idea of the period they were in. This led to these styles becoming  very district in how they looked such as the Psychedelic art style. These styles were then taken by mass media cooperation and turned into something that could be sold to the public whether it was through bands or clothing. They used the styles and turned it into something that was no longer district. This can be seen even today something unique can come around but soon it becomes the norm and loses the voice it once had.

The creation of mainstream advertisement is one of the reasons the idea of culture jamming was created. Culture jamming is a form of protest that was used to rebel against the status quo or the mainstream culture. Examples of culture jamming can be found in many places throughout history. One example depicts a McDonald’s ad that exposes the idea of McDonald’s using growth hormones on cows. This is an example because the ad uses; McDonald’s brand and color to expose them to animal cruelty. It also uses the image of a humanoid female cow to represent the growth hormones. It also has a distorted version of Mc Donald’s in the background to show its corruption. Another example is an ad for Absolut Vodka which mocks the brand’s use of the Shakespearean writing on the bottle. They do this by having the vodka bottle be crusted and having a quote from Shakespeare that states that their action is ruining the point of Shakespeare’s work. It also mocks the ad’s idea of vodka being perfect by calling it impotent or useless. It also pushes further on this idea by having the bottle look like an impotent penis.

Mainstream at times seems like has one goal to sell anything to people no matter what it is. This can at times make it very hard for a unique voice or work of art to get out because it could wind up being used simply to sell to people and not for its original purpose. But hopefully, this does not stop people from getting their voices out there and trying something new.

Typography as a Radical Act in an Industry Ever-dominated by White Men by Silas Munro, Eye on Design, 2019

Design Gets More Diverse by Alice Rawsthorn, NYTimes, 2011

Design industries, like many other industries, face issues of racism or discrimination. Many people of another race or gender can feel boxed out and ignored. They feel this way because who they are and what they have done is simply not being recognized. This causes them to be ignored in design or other industries. This causes their stories to be untold until someone finally looks at them. I was looking at the reading by Madeleine Morley where they were talking about their research into African designers. The talk about how there was little information about them made their research very difficult. This shows how when we don’t give attention to diversity in design or other fields, it will simply be ignored and forgotten. This is why it is important to have diversity in not just design but other industries as well.
Diversity in design is a very important thing to have, and I think there are many ways to have it become part of design. One way is to teach design students about diverse designers who are less well-known or are ignored. This can designers from all over the world, not just in America. Many great designers do not get the same recognition that others do. The designers don’t receive this recognition for a lot of reasons, whether it be because of their race, their financial situation, or even what they believe. This causes their work to be forgotten or simply go unnoticed. This will allow even more diverse styles to be introduced into the design. It will also give these designers more reignition. It will also allow diverse designers to gain a voice and be able to spread their views about themselves and their beliefs to more people. As stated in the reading by Alice Rawsthorn “designers are defining their own approaches, which are influencing their peers elsewhere.” This helps to prove my point by shining a light on more diverse designers. It allows others to learn from them and create a wider range of designs.
I believe that in 20 years, design will have evolved greatly. I believe it would have introduced new styles of design. From how everything is structured to how it is used in the design piece. This is because as the world changes, so does design to reflect, the change in the world. As shown in the reading by Silas Munro who talked about how they introduced diversity into typography. How they changed the structure and style of type to reflect a more diverse voice This shows how design changes along with the world it is in. I believe how design is done would have changed as well. As shown through history, as technology evolves, the way design is made changes along with it. Finally, typography would have changed as well, showing new fonts and font styles that reflect, the change in design. Design history would have also changed, introducing more designers and art periods that have come and gone. There could also be lesser-known designers from the past who could be added to design history. This is because there are many parts of history that we are only just discovering, and the same could be said about design. This is why design is important because it is something that is always changing alongside the human race.

Jan Tschichold, “The Principles of the New Typography” pg35-38, Karl Gerstner, Designing Programmes pg55-61, Joseph Muller-Brockman, “Grid and Design Philosophy” pg62-63 from Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field by Helen Armstrong.

                                                      Reading Response 5

Many designers have their own way of approaching design. Whether it is using text as a design piece, having only images in their design, or having a single illustration in the design. Design is something that can be different with each work depending on who is doing it. That’s what makes design interesting.

We can also see the idea of different approaches to design in the reading. Where each designer has their own view of how design should be used. Jan Tschichold wanted to approach design with the idea of not just using text as decoration in a design. Wanting it to be used as something that is simple, easy to understand, and can communicate the message of the design with a minor issue. Jan wanted text too, not to have different fonts, be different sizes, or have a design going around it. He did not want this because, as I understand, it would make it hard for the viewer to understand the text or focus on it. Karl Gerstner believed design should be approached more systematically. He wanted design too to follow a sort of formula so that designers would have trouble with what they were designing. The system would help them with many parts, or they design processes so they could focus on how they would put it together. This system would help them decide what fonts to use, the flow of the text, or how close their words should be. Finally, Joseph Muller’s approach was to use grids to help organize the design. Joseph believed that using a grid helps to bring an understanding of what the designer is doing. That grids help them design to organize the work and give them control over the space they are using for the design.

The piece I chose below represents the approach of all three designers, and I will explain how. For one, this design has simple use of typography. The type is both the same font, size and is very easy to understand. This represents the typography Jan wanted, as I stated before. The text carries some choices used in the chart created by Karl. Such as the use of san-serif font, the text going from left to right and the text being combined. I saw all these design ideas in the chart that Karl created for design. Finally, their design shows the use of a grid because of both texts being on the same line with neither falling below the other. This is a representation of what Joseph wanted in designing an organization and clarity in the design. As shown and stated, design can come in many different shapes and sizes, but its goal is always the same. That goal is to help the design express their message in their own way.

Reading Response 4B – JD

Bauhaus was an art style and art school that came about in 1919 by German architect Walter Gropius. This style and school help to change and evolve art taking it to the next level. This is shown by the three reading’s written by Walter Gropius, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Herbert Bayer. In all these readings they all agree that what was lacking from art in the past was the use of text as a part of the illustration being expressed in the design. Instead of text simply used as a way of explaining something.
In design, every part of it has a role to play as shown in the Bauhaus art style. Typography and photography’s role is to express the ideas of the design. They do this through visual communication to the audience that is watching the design. Language and communication play the role of expressing what is being in the design. This gives the reader an easier time understanding what is being said in the design.
According to the reading on Bauhaus as I have understood art is something that is going to keep evolving. To evolve along with it and create new forms of art, artists must incorporate those new ways of doing art into their art style. This will allow a new style to be born allowing them to stay with what they like but not have to completely change how they do art. This is why teachers should be willing to teach artists how to incorporate other styles of art into their own. This will allow them to continue to grow as artists.
In today’s day and age, art has changed and the way it is done has changed as well. To survive today Bauhaus would have to include using imagery inside of the images to help it grow. It could also use digital programs to help create the art to improve on the work being done in the style. Digital programs would allow them to correct and evolve the Bauhaus art style. It could do this due to the many tools that are inside of it that are meant to help the artist.

Reading Response 4 – JD

In the three readings, each author had his vision for what they wanted from art. An example is Filippo Tommaso Marinetti envisioned futurism that he created would help to push Italy into the future of art and make them forget the art of the past. This would cause new styles of art to be born and art of the past to be forgotten. He believed that this would happen as technology and the style of art grew, leaving older styles of design behind. Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Aleksei Gan imagined a future where constructivism continued to evolve through the experimentation of those who used it. They believed that technology would help them to organize and create new ideas in the constructivism art style. Finally, El Lissitzky envisioned a future where text is used more than just as sentences but is used instead as an illustration piece to give it new meaning. He believed that technology would allow a continued change of how text and illustration were used in books and on covers.

The artists of this reading all had their visions of art and design and what it would be in the future. They were able to anticipate many of the things that art and design would grow into. They were able to do this due to their own experience in the field of art and design. Thought what they had experienced and learned as they were growing into artists. Thought their views of what they wanted from design and how they have seen technology and art grow as time has passed.

Though these artists have different visions of the future of art they do share many common views. One view that they share is that art is something that must continue to change and never remain the same. Another view they all share is that if we as artists become stagnant and don’t evolve then art itself will fall behind and will become pointless. Another view is that we as artists must work hard to make sure art continues to evolve and change. What they might disagree on is how art and design needed to change. This is due to them all having their vision of how art should change. Also, they may disagree on the parts of design and art that are the most important.

In the text, there are many important elements, ones that talk about the author’s views of design and some that talk about what they want from design There are even some points that have connected to the presents. For instance, in Filippo Tommaso Marinetti’s reading, he talks about futurism which is important because futurism helps to influence the way graphic design is done in the present. Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Aleksei Gan bring up elements of experimentation and organization. This is relevant because both are important elements to how graphic design is done and how new designs are made. El Lissitzky brings up elements of using text as an illustration and images to create a point and represent something. This is relevant because that is how design is made today using text and images to symbolize a point and send a message to the viewer. Each text has its relevant element but they also have elements that are a problem. For Filippo, it is the idea of forgetting the past because it is the past that influences most designers. For Aleksandr Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, Aleksei Gan it is the idea of constructivist do not need to change how to create their art. This is because any style of art needs to change with the technology of it will be forgotten.
