Postmodernism is the era that followed during the 1960s and 1970s after modernism. It was the era in which technology was evolving, new musical genres were introduced and the Cold War had just ended. It was a time period to move on from. As new music was in the making, album covers became an interesting way to show art during this era. Postmodern art wasnât as traditional as modern art. It was more free and open to come up with a design without the possibility of getting hate from the public like in todayâs society. Now a days, every design has to be examined in depth in order to avoid their design to be targeted by a certain type of group or individual. Postmodernism can still be seen as a continuation of modernism because everything during this era is evolving. The same principles are being used, however, they are being exaggerated and are more creative with the designs.Â
There are some elements of postmodernism that still continue today. These elements still make an impact in todayâs society. Elements like photography, body art, graffiti art, and even video art still make a positive impact in this era. As eraâs change, everything starts to evolve and new ideas are shown in these types of artwork. In todayâs era, everything can be considered art; like sculptures, paintings, buildings, even a toilet in a museum can be considered art. People are much more open minded than in previous eraâs. There is so much diversity in this era that it is shown in artworks. With that being said, I believe we are still living in the postmodernism era due to the amount of artwork I have seen in the past years. Whether these artworks are shown in museums or on social media. There are new artworks every day.Â
In Paul Randâs reading âGood design is goodwillâ, he talks about designer and client relationship. The mindset behind a designer and its work ethic. How he may feel and view a project and how can a client react to it. Paul considers design to be a tough but yet rewarding major to excel in. There are numerous ways in which a designer can become a good designer and be successful. He explains how most designers want their work to be appealing to the eye. Which in most cases thatâs how it should be. However, not every design will be appealing and successful. Paul says âMany designers, schooled or self-taught, are interested primarily in things that look good and work well; they see their mission realized only when aesthetics and practical needs coalesce.â I agree with this quote because in my case, I do enjoy seeing a design I worked on to be appealing to the eye. Clients may not be looking for an appealing design or logo, but for a design thatâs straight forward and resolves their problem. Designers are considered to be problem solvers.Â
In the design industry, the designer is always free to draw and execute anything they want. They are able to come up with a design for the client. A process is being done throughout the designerâs execution. Designers are filled with research in order to have an idea on what to create and design. But at the end of the day, everything is viewed by the director. The director of that company is the one who decides if the design is worthy enough to be shown to the client. The designer receives feedback from the director to see in what area should continue to be worked on.Â
In some situations, there are designers that want to make a statement by using a famous logo or design. This is called âCulture Jammingâ; itâs a form of protest. It is good to bring awareness and have a good laugh as well. Designers come up with these ideas as a movement to protest. As designers became more talented and modern, the design industry has benefited from these designers because new ideas have been shown throughout this era. Technology has made it much more easier for designers to design. Designers of today have it easy compared to the designers in the mid 1900s.Â
Every artists in this industry has their own way of expression. Each and every one of them has a different way of coming up with an idea. All creators and graphic designers are from different countries with different cultural backgrounds. During the mid 1900s, the amount of African American graphic designers slowly began to rise. The work provided by African American designers is different compared to other designers. The artworks appear to be more modern with much more emphasis. In the article âCreating the African-American Practitioners Absent From Way Too Many Classroom Lecturesâ, it talks about how slowly the artwork by African Americans have been appreciated by society. Even though some artists looked down upon these African American artists. The article says âGiven that Modernist techniques in graphic design had become the aesthetic of commerce, they couldnât avoid its heavy hand in their work.â This explains how African American designers would come out with expressive art. More modern and with such creative ideas to express themselves.Â
Thereâs no end in the graphic design world. Over time, new artists will appear and will come out with new and innovative artworks. Everyone in this field should be open for new and upcoming artworks. One way to change the commercial design field in order to include diversity of voices and visions is to start advertising new ideas. For design companies to be open to new artwork. Everyone will have a different idea and come from different background. Let upcoming artists to explain their thought process behind their work. Every artwork is unique and should be welcomed into the design world. It may take some time for new artwork to be valued and looked up at; however, it should happen as time goes by.Â
Apart from just designs being created, typefaces and fonts are also a part of the graphic design world. The way typefaces look in an artwork can determine whether or not the poster/artwork is good or not. Typography has always made an impact in the design world. There have been many typefaces that are dedicated to an individual. For example, âMartin, named after Martin Luther King, and William named after W.E.B. Du Bois, an American activist, writer, and historian.â In the past, it has been tough for designers to create a typefaces compared to the era that we are in today. Everything was done by hand and took a longer time for a typeface to be created and finished. Designers using certain typefaces would make a much bigger impact than others based on the typeface used. Typefaces will continue to be created and have better feedback with the use of the technology that we have today.Â

My research paper is about a poster by Cuban graphic designer Beltran of Angela Davis in the 1970s. Angela was a political activist, scholar, and author, who was well known for her arrest. She was accused of purchasing guns used in a crime where a prosecutor was killed and a juror was injured. Due to this arrest, many posters were created and designed with the text âFree Angelaâ to show support.Â

Based on the three readings, I can determine that all of these artists wanted to change the way artists view design. Artists like Filippo Tommaso Marinetti had different ideas for his future. He wanted to make a name for himself in the design world. Marinetti wanted his country to move on from the previous art that appeared in the past. He knew that eventually technology will evolve and wanted his nation to view different types of artworks. New types of text and illustration will appear soon after which will then be admired and focused on by the country.Â
Aleksandr Rodchenko targets everyone instead of a specific group based on his artworks and method. He had the idea that his artwork should benefit and serve society as a whole. I can agree with his idea that in todayâs society, in order to create change, you will have to make your design meaningful and modern. Â Constructivism meaning for a careful technical analysis of modern materials, possible to influence design; even architecture and fashion. During that time, art was meant to be taught and learn by other artists. However, with these new artists trying to make a change in the art world. They wanted artists to come up with their own artwork, their own methods, and their own process. It was something to be built which had to take time to be done.Â
There are many individuals who consider technology to be an âenemyâ for the design world because in the past, it was much tougher to come up with a final design. Now a days, itâs much easier to finish a design. The process may take less time than in the past which is why some individuals may believe that technology is an âenemyâ for this industry.Â
SECOND DRAFT:
Based on the three readings, I can determine that these artists wanted to change the way artists view design. Artists like Filippo Tommaso Marinetti had different ideas for his future. He wanted to make a name for himself in the design world. Marinetti wanted his country to move on from the previous art that appeared in the past. He knew that eventually technology will develop and wanted his nation to view different artworks. New types of text and illustration will appear soon after, which will then be admired and focused on by the country.
Aleksandr Rodchenko targets everyone instead of a specific group based on his artworks and method. He had the idea that his artwork should benefit and serve society. I can agree with his idea that in todayâs society, in order to create change, make your design meaningful and modern. Constructivism meaning for a careful technical analysis of modern materials, possible to influence design; even architecture and fashion. During that time, art was taught and learn by other artists. However, with these new artists trying to change the art world. They wanted artists to come up with their own artwork, their own methods, and their own process. It was something to be built, which had to take time to be done.
There are many individuals who consider technology to be an âenemyâ for the design world because, in the past, it was much tougher to come up with a final design. Nowadays, itâs much easier to finish a design. The process may take less time than in the past, which is why some individuals may believe that technology is an âenemyâ for this industry.

- Â Select a design or design object created after 1971 in which the influence of the theories considered thus far can be seen.
-  Begin with a brief description of the object, the designer who created it, and the historical circumstances under which it was made.
- Your goal is to provide a critical examination, not an account of historical details.
A design I would like to talk about is a postcard created by Experimental Jetset called âDe Theatercompagnie Postcardâ. It was created in 2006 and has a couple of appealing aspects. This object was mostly based on a phrase said in a play. The poster says âYou know I love you, I love you with all my heartâ. According to the creator of the poster, two quotes from the play were taken which is why there are two posters. The idea was to make it seem like there was a dialogue being said with these posters. I believe that itâs creative because it makes the poster engaging and interesting. Apart from that, the color palette used makes the poster stand out in public. Using the colors blue and red makes the poster have contrast which doesnât make the poster non readable. It is a type of poster that will have you looking back at it while you pass by it. There isnât too much going on in the poster which is an aspect that many posters should have. Most of the time âless is moreâ which is definitely what this poster has. The size of the typeface is just the right size to be legible and readable from a distance.Â
- What role does technology play in shaping design?
Technology plays a huge role in shaping design because now a days designers are able to share their work in the internet. Social media is a large platform where designers can show their work, connect with other designers, and meet clients. In the past, technology wasnât there or wasnât as evolved as it is at the moment. Designers in the past had to get lucky to get credit or get noticed by others. Apart from that, technology has made it much easier for designers to complete their work and even make their work better with different types of tools.Â
- What distinguishes the field, or fields, of design from other creative occupations?
The field of design focuses more on problem solving and providing a solution to a problem. During this era, most client are looking for a design in which a designer has to provide according to the clients needs. Communicating with the client will make it much easier for the designer to provide the design that will satisfy the client.Â
- What are the most urgent problems facing designers today?
A problem that designers face today is keeping up with the technology that is being provided day by day. New tools will always be introduced in the programs that designers use. There are already numerous tools to use and having to start getting used to a new tool is always a challenge for designers. A second problem could be satisfying the client. Some clients could be tough to work with and expect a design that might not come out the way the designer would like to. However, at the end of the day, the client is who decides if the design is good or bad.Â
