Walker Evans, The American photographer, and photojournalist who is well known for his work documenting the effects of the Great Depression. For this assignment, we are asked to view some of his work during that time period and compare it to what we see on our daily subway rides. Evans did a great job capturing the stress and hopelessness in the faces of his subjects which pretty much reflected the time period in which they were captured and the economic crisis each one of his subjects was most likely enduring and going through. “The guard is down and the mask is off. Even more, than in lone bedrooms (where there are mirrors), people’s faces are in naked repose down in the subway.” this quote made me reflect more when looking at people in the subway, although I was not brave enough to take pictures of people. especially, after seeing how the Subway Couple ( in the assignment cover) were looking straight at the camera. In conclusion, I Do see similarities between the riders’ expressions during the Depression Era to today’s riders, however, they look less stressed and some are even able to have a lovely nap.
