Civil War & Food

What I found most interesting about the civil war soldiers was that they ate food spoiled enough to have maggots living in it. It’s understandable that while in the conditions of war food quality will be less focused on taste and more on functionality but hardtack couldn’t live up to that if not stored precisely. In addition to spoiled large crackers they had a “by any means necessary” approach to consuming coffee. While I enjoy a great cup of Joe, I will not use water that an animal wont drink just to have that satisfying moment of caffeine. Animals know when something is not for consumption and I’m sure diarrhea followed. But hey, coffee. Am I right?
I cannot live without doubles. Fried dough stuffed with channa, a Trinidadian snack/breakfast food.
