HW 2: Food and Coffee in the Civil War

If I had a choice to give up coffee or food, I would choose to give up coffee due to its bitter taste. What surprises me about the soldiers’ diet is how unsanitary their food can be for them. Though, the food they ate doesn’t seem so bad, despite the unforgiving environment they were in, these soldiers managed to eat things like soup, stew, potatoes, biscuits, bread, and even coffee. It’s also good that the soldiers were supervised and had The Sanitary to take care of the sanitation problems, and improve the food conditions for them. In addition, they even employed a skilled cook to prepare the food. Coffee was a big deal during the war, and according to the NY Times article, it served as the “energy source” for the soldiers to continue their duties due to the caffeine. The drink became so popular that even the generals recommended it to their soldiers to drink before going to marches, or battle. If there is one food I can’t live without, it is white rice.
