There are a couple of ways the blend tool is helpful. This tool allows you to combine shapes and colors to add intrigue to a 2D picture, in other words, it adds dimension. The blend tool’s main objective is to create smooth transitions. Once you create a blend the object that was once two is treated as one. The blend tool highlights each anchor point made, so when you place a blend on an object, you may adjust the shape accordingly, impacting the gradient of color, meaning it may add or subtract certain highlights or shadows.

In the Pathfinder palette, in the bottom left corner, there will be an option to divide the Pathfinder. First, you have to select the overlapping shapes, ungroup them, and divide them. This tool creates new paths within the existing overlapping “shape”. So it will create three distinct layers (top, bottom, overlap) consisting of three new paths. This tool may be most helpful when creating repeating patterns.

Kayla, thank you for describing blend tool and divide option of Pathfinder. I use Pathfinder all the time for all my works. I think this is one of the most helpful tools in Ai.

    • Esther

      I agree with your statement.

    1. I usually use Blend tool for making a nice transition between my shapes, and combine them. It is easier to use sometimes than gradient, because you are mixing not only color, you mixing also shapes on your Artboard. I believe when you use Gradient tool you can edit the actual blending between shades. Blending tool, for me, is like Gradient and Pathfinder in one, which creates new shape and saving all colors. Pathfinder will create a new shape, but the color of this shape will be, which has more privileges.
    2. For creating separate shapes you need to go to the Pathfinder and choose Divide (make sure to ungroup everything), after that you will divide all your shapes. If you do not want to divide everything what you selected, go to the tool bar and choose Shape Builder tool, after that select all shapes which you need, and click on areas which you want to create as a new shape, if you want to delete click alt and then click on a shape.

When creating blend in Illustrator, you have different options using the blend tool. For example, you can use the blend tool to control the spacing, orientation, and other aspects of the blend. You can also edit the blend by selecting it with the Selection Tool or (v) and adjusting different anchor points, handles, etc.

To create separate shapes for overlapping items when it is used, is the “Divide” tool. This is located in the Pathfinder palette. This tool is helpful for when you are creating complex artwork or separating specific parts of an illustration. To undo a step, just click command+z (on mac). Not only can you create separate complex shapes, you can also manipulate these objects in various ways, such as applying different colors, effects, etc.

Hi Esther! I agree with your answers. Thank you for including why the “Divide” tool is helpful and other possibilities for using the Pathfinder palette.

In Adobe Illustrator, when using the Blend Tool to create a blend between two or more objects, you have several options to control the behavior and appearance of the blend. These options can be found in the Blend Options dialog box.

    1. Spacing: Determines the distribution of steps between the objects in the blend. You can choose between specified steps or specified distance.
    2. Orientation: Defines the orientation of the blend. You can choose between Align to Page, Align to Path, or Align to Path/Relative to Path.
    3. Smooth Color: This option ensures a smooth transition of colors between objects in the blend.
    4. Specified Steps: Allows you to specify the number of steps in the blend. This option is only available when “Spacing” is set to “Specified Steps”.
    5. Preview: Toggles the preview of the blend on and off.
    6. Blend Across: This option is available when you’re blending between objects in different layers. It allows you to blend objects across layers or not.
    7. Raster Effects: This option is used for blending rasterized objects. It determines how the rasterization process will affect the blend.

These options give you control over the appearance and behavior of blends in Adobe Illustrator, allowing you to create a wide range of effects and transitions between objects.

The tool in the Pathfinder palette in Adobe Illustrator that creates separate shapes for overlapping items when used is called the “Divide” tool.

Here’s one you can use it:

    1. Select the objects you want to divide.
    2. Open the Pathfinder palette (Window > Pathfinder).
    3. Click on the “Divide” button within the Pathfinder palette.

When you use the Divide tool, Illustrator divides all the selected objects into separate shapes wherever they overlap. This can be particularly useful when you want to create distinct shapes from overlapping objects or when you need to delete certain parts of objects that overlap. After using the Divide tool, you can ungroup the resulting shapes (if necessary) to work with them individually.

Wow, this was super informative Stevie. I have yet to play with the blend tool, but I am excited to start using it for our Disney poster project!

    • Tyheim

I appreciate and like that, you gave a more in-depth answer on to how to use the tools.

The blend tool is helpful to combine a blend of two or more objects. In the blend tool options, you can change the spacing, Orientation, Smoothness of colors, etc… The orientation allows you to change the rotation of the blended objects. The spacing allows you to change the distance between steps of the blend. The Smooth color allows the Illustrator to automatically calculate the amount of steps that the blend consists of.

The Divide pathfinder tool is a great tool for users who want to break up existing shapes into different layers to create a different path for each shape. The shapes can be broken up into top, bottom, overlapping layers. You can also use the trim tool and trim the shapes into your desired sections. The user can also merge shapes together by using the Merge tool.

When it comes to the blend tool, the user has a lot of options. There’s Spacing, Smooth Color, Specified Steps, Specified Distance, Orientation, Align to Page, Align to Path. All these tools helps make one’s creations transition into each other better. Hence forth the name “ Blend tool”

The tool in the Pathfinder Palette in Illustrator that creates separate shapes for overlapping items is the wide selections of options under the “object”. In this tab one can chose to group shapes together or cut out shapes as well as many other things.

The blend tool is helpful to combine different colors and shapes or even different objects. In the blend tool option, you can change the Merge the colors, Smoothen the colors, etc… Also, the orientation in the bending tool allows me to control the rotation of the blended colors, objects and shapes. The merging of colors allows me to create new colors. Then the Smooth color allows the me to calculate the amount of steps that make the blend. In my opinion, The divide pathfinder tool is a great tool because it allows the shapes to be broken up into top, bottom, overlapping layers.another benefit is that when you use the Divide tool, you are able to divide all the selected shapes into separate shapes. This is useful for when you want to create different unique shapes or when you need to delete certain parts of objects that overlap.

  9. Wasik Chowdhoury

With the blend tool, you can combine different shapes and even merge colors. Especially you can smoothen them. The divine pathfinder tool is a best option which means that you can easily break shapes.

  10. Tyheim

The choices that the blend tool offer is combining the mixing of color, shapes, and objects. You can easily do this by selecting the blend tool that looks like a white square that is behind and faded white circle, followed by an empty circle.

A tool in the Pathfinder palette in Illustrator that creates separate shapes for overlapping items when it is used would have to be the divider Pathfinder tool. This would give you many options whether overlapping the bottom and top layers, or breaking up existing shapes.
