Topic

Raster Vs. Vector and Image Resolution

Notice the differences from left file and right file.

We will begin by getting to know each other. The professor and each student will be given the opportunity to introduce themselves and share interests and backgrounds. We will review Class Syllabus and expectations for students. We will have a Question & Answer period.

Today, we will discuss the characteristics of Raster and Vector Files. The best use and best practices associated with them will also be discussed. File Formats, File Naming Conventions, and File Extensions will also be reviewed. We will begin to familiarize ourselves with Image Resolution.

Objectives

What you can expect to learn

  • Raster vs. Vector
  • Understanding Resolution
  • File Formats, Extensions, and File Naming Conventions

Critique

Each week we will review homework assignments from the previous class. Students will participate in reviewing material and offering suggestions for improvement for their cohort.

Lab

Lab assignments are done during class time. This week we will find examples of two Vector and two Raster Files (one in black and white and one in color for each format) to be shared with the class.

Discussion

Each week you will need to respond to two questions that will be posted. This is a requirement for the participation part of your grade.

Homework Due Next Class

All work should be submitted by 11:30 pm the day before class.

Each file should be saved according to the following naming convention. i.e., 01_LastNameFirstInitial.

  • Find examples of two Vector and two Raster Files (one in black and white and one in color for each format) to be shared with the class.
  • Read Raster vs. Vector in the Resources and make yourself familiar with the differences of each element. Also, read File Format and Understanding Resolution notes to familiarize yourself with them.
  • Write a 300-word description of why you chose your examples for the Vector/Raster formats. For example, the description for “Vector” choices may include items from Raster vs. Vector notes. The same applies to “Raster” choices.” Talk about their file format and extensions.
  • Save your file to the designated Google Drive folder.

Vocabulary

  • Pixel
