Prof. Joe Brogdon | Fall 2023

Week 9 Agenda – Wed. 10/18, Fri. 10/20

In Class on Wednesday:

  • As a class, we’re going to the Library for a presentation on doing research and finding sources!

Homework for Friday:

  • WRITE: Write a post on OpenLab (at least 300-400 words) in which you introduce your research question. You may find your topic anywhere, it is completely up to you. Follow your own interests, or think about major historical events, think of the past or the future, think of different people, places, organizations, ideas, sports, technologies!
    • First, write your topic in question form (it can’t be a yes-or-no question, though).
    • Next, respond to each of the following the questions in bold:
      • Why are you interested in this question?  (Feel free to talk about your own personal experience with the topic, or to tell an anecdote about your experience with this subject matter)
      • What do you expect to find in your research? (Why do you expect to find this?) Remember that it’s okay to be wrong– you might find a completely different answer than the one you intended to find. You won’t get marked down for that!

Spend some time on this because it will serve as the first draft of the introduction for your annotated bibliography!

What is important here (and I can’t stress this enough) is that you research something you want to know more about, not something you think you already know the answer to.  You may be curious to know why there are so few African American ballerinas in major companies, or you may want to know how the NYC subway system has been updated and improved in the past 50 years, or you may want to know what we really learn from playing computer games. Just be curious!

REMEMBER YOU MUST GET YOUR TOPIC APPROVED!

In Class on Friday:

  • Review CityTech Library resources for research.
  • Introduce and discuss Critical thinking framework together as a group. In many Math 1275 courses, students have used a critical thinking framework that we think is also useful for writing, research and all kinds of other scholarship.  Fill out this worksheet on the critical thinking framework using the following research question: how the NYC subway system has been updated and improved in the past 50 years.
  • With remaining time, each student will fill out the worksheet on the critical thinking framework using their own topic/research question

Homework for next Wednesday:

  • SOURCE #1: Find your first source, and post it to Openlab. Create a new post titled Unit 2 Sources. Just pasting the link is fine! We will work with these sources on Wednesday, so this is important to do before class next week!
    • Listing more than one source is also great, if you have other sources selected already!

What is the impact of immigration in New York?

This question is important to me because today New York is one of the most famous cities in the country for immigration, since the majority of immigrants are located here. And for other people who are not migrants it is bad. Someone said that New York is like a sanctuary.

In this research I want to discover what affects people who are legal like this and how they want to see a change or how to live with immigrants. I want to find this because I want to know the different things about people and the different points of view of people who are not going through these events.

My research question is “what is the impact of immigration in New York?”
