It took me a while to think of the communities I’m a part of besides my major. I never realized that certain things I like to do during my free time could be considered discourse communities. One of the communities I’m a part of is the makeup or cosmetology community. I’ve been obsessed with makeup and learning about it probably since I’ve been in middle school. I’ve always loved the creative aspects of it, all the colors, the techniques, trying out a variety of brands and new products, it’s always been fun. Like any other DC, makeup has its own language and vocabulary that I learned the more I got interested. I first learned the types of foundations, concealers, primers, etc to use depending on my skin type, skin tone, and undertones. I then learned how to use certain tools like beauty blenders or brushes to learn the basics of cream or liquid consistencies. Through social media, I still learn and use the makeup terms, trends, or phrases like “cut crease”, “highlighting”, ‘baking”, “dewy”, “matte”, “full beat”, etc. Using this vocabulary makes me feel more in sync with everyone else. I actually felt like I was part of a community and made it feel like I understood a lot more.
