MASTER PLAN FOR DISASTER RELIEF COMMUNITY

2/26/2013 Boards Due; Presentation of Site Plans (20 minutes each group)

The class will divided into three groups of 5-6 students. Each group will work together to develop and document a master plan for the disaster relief community located in Coney Island, situated partly at Calvert Vaux Park and partly on an Oceanus barge docked at the park.

The master plan should include the following:

• Concept
• Summary
• Program (residential/community/commercial)
• Timeline of Implementation (set up and take down)
• Rules for individual residential unit design
• Site Plan(s)
• Additional plans, diagrams, and text as needed

The site plan and diagrams should explain at least the following:

• Site location
• Transportation
• Circulation
• Infrastructure (utilities/services)
• Program
• Number of Containers
• Climate and Light

For the rules for individual unit design, consider the following:

• Number of containers per family or per person
• Footprint
• Massing
• Relationship to circulation (openings, massing)
• Materials

Constraints are the same as for Assignment 7:

• Design for approximately 60 families. At least 30 families must have their homes on the barge.
• At least 30% of the area must be reserved for community services/commercial.
• The same density of use on the barge must also be used on land.
